As a bass player myself, I really appreciate Jimmy Johnson. He doesn't overrun anybody aand keeps it right in the pocket and in the groove during his solo which I though was really melodic and fit the song perfectly. Like Lee, he can say something with just the well placed notes rather than tearing up the neck. He cooks.

Jimmy Johnson's one of my favorite bassists. His tone is usually pretty dark for playing an Alembic but here he's really letting it come through for a change.
@stratoblaster53319 жыл бұрын
Brad Maestas I don't agree. Jimmy is one of the identifiable Alembic bass players and also instrumental in developing the Low B with Alembic for 5 string bass. Film and the B.B.'s has a very distinct Alembic tone, as well as his playing with Allan Holdsworth. The music it self may be dark but not his tone.
@JJDPROMEDIAPRODUCTION5 жыл бұрын
I think he stated that he played it wide open as a compromise for not "Thumping". So, you get the growl..
@davidp1584 жыл бұрын
I totally agree about his tone. Often he is buried in the mix, by design, as he is a very supportive player. That said, I prefer a more "up front" tone, and it was a pleasure to hear him so clearly in this video. Amazing, tasteful musician!

Love Jimmy Johnson's playing. Not only does he play with Lee Rit including his 6 String record, but also on Allan Holdworth Metal Fatigue record and James Taylor including his double live CD. This year in 2019 he is playing with Steve Gadd and his band. See him if you dare.

He played a great bass solo while staying in the context of the song with its chords and feel. It's not a shred solo (thankfully) and you can hear when Carlos and Jimmy get a solid lock and then it's magic. I just noticed Jimmy had a chorus on his bass when doing his solo only.

Jimmy's melodic bass solo so amazing, so conspicuous among slappers.

Johnson is killin it. Besides the original Miller this is by far my favorite version I found so far. The song seems to be a invitation for bassist to throw around with any syncopated slap pattern they got lying around which totally ruins the idea. This is great!!!
@lee3997 ай бұрын
As a bass player, this can be true. Marcus played the original on the album, and his solo still reflects the song. As Neil Steubenhaus has said about Marcus, "sometimes it's only 8 bars, but it's a great little piece of music."

I remember a session for one of my own records back in the late 80's where we had Jimmy come in to lay down a track. We asked him to do some slapping, and he looked at us and said - and this is an exact quote - "I DON'T BOINK". He's the most amazing bass player I have ever had the pleasure of hearing and working with, so as far as I'm concerned he can remain "Boinkless" forever! The rest of the band is amazing as well...Lee of course, and Carlos Vega on drums (R.I.P.). Was that Ernie Watts on sax? And Luis Conte on perc? Thanks for posting.
