The asthma question is likely related to potential dust exposure on site, not gases. Dust is a major health and environmental safety concern for many mining and industrial processes. There and controls to keep it in check, and PPE is a last line of defence, but it can still get pretty bad at times. "Bad" might be a bunch of dust from a drill and blast operation drifts over to a nearby town and the people living there get pissed.
