Students and employees earlier walked out in protest at Israel's war in Gaza, and called for the university to cut academic relations with Israel. Police in riot gear, some with dogs and armed with batons, attempted to break up the protest. The university had requested police intervention after reporting trespassing and vandalism. Inside the university, students set up tents and built barricades with office furniture. Similar protests also took place across other Dutch universities

Guardian forgot to show the part where one of the protesters, a Palestinian asylum seeker, not a student destroyed equipments, Art, furniture etc on the campus. He is now in police custody and will go to court on May 29.

Maybe add that protests were not contained to just the university, they spilled over throughout the city centre last week where public property was destroyed, rioters threatened journalists and hit people with sticks. The street tiles and cobblestones of Amsterdam’s historic canals were ripped out and thrown at police. Police were also assaulted with fireworks and corrosive chemicals. During the protests shown in this video the in-campus shops were looted, journalists were again assaulted and equipment like tv screens, coffee machines and fridges were smashed with sticks, bats and chairs. University property like computers in public study rooms were damaged with graffiti. The university had suspended all academic activities for the next two days as it says it cannot guarantee the safety of students and staff. But yeah, let’s show how the poor “peaceful protesters” were “attacked” by police.

I believe I read it on either AT5 or De Telegraaf, dunno exactly which one anymore, but it is confirmed that these protests were taken over by pro-Palestine people, or "infiltrated", as people call it. They took over the protests and they were the ones destroying everything. I believe these protests actually started peacefully, with only UvA students, but with how touchy this topic is, it's not much of a surprise to realize that it was taken over by the "protesters" that have been wreaking havoc for months in this country

They are very light for combat, and very flexible. The sticks are of a type that with strikes to the arms and legs quickly, would be like a punch, and my deflect continued actions . Note that the head normally is not the target. In some counties Police will use rubber sticks , no shield in an attack mode. The Dutch have water cannon, but do not appear to make use of it.

I don't wanna get into a discussion but it is no longer of it's time. Of course many things we used to do were wrong and are wrong. And many things we do now are wrong and are going to be seen as wrong in the future. We learn from what is "real" and "current" and act in the present moment. Considering their concern for the people of Gaza, why are the protestors unable to take a direct flight ( or ride a boat or take a camel ride ) to Gaza ? It does not matter. Why do protesters have anything to do with the average Dutch citizen who pays taxes? And instead disrupt the daily lives of the Dutch peoplee? I am so curious. Nah it's just that protests always get hijacked by people with bad intentions. I know people who went to the protests and they're all very upset about the people who showed up in full black and started vandalizing stuff and it's quite likely they weren't even there to protest at all.

@@theovanderstorm3171 The student demonstrators and the university agreed before this demonstration: 1. No face masks 2. No hateful slogans 3. No intimidation of journalists 4. Do not go inside 5. No vandalism These terms were breached almost immediately. Masked “protestors” went into the university buildings and started destroying study areas, computers, etc. Support staff was threatened and force to leave. Journalists were physically pushed out of the building. Etc

@@JSK010 Exactly, in the video at 0.29, subtitles tell that the university had asked for the police to stop the occupation of the buildings and the premises. The UVA is the owner of these buildings and premises. So I don’t see the misleading. Meanwhile the damages are at least € 1.500.000.- and counting.

@@theovanderstorm3171 the 1.5 million concerned the demonstration last week. Yesterdays damages have yet to be calculated. Misleading because no images of the vandalism are shown, no mention of intimidated journalists and university staff is made, no mention of "masked protestors" going up stairs to look for the university board.
