1976 in Brooklyn, New York gegründet, gelten Riot als Pioniere des US-amerikanischen Power Metal. Nach mehreren Reunions und Besetzungswechseln ist die Band seit 2013 unter dem Namen Riot V aktiv.
Die Gründungsbesetzung der damals unter dem Namen Riot gegründeten Combo bestand aus Guy Speranza († 2003, Gesang), Mark Reale († 2012, Gitarre), Cliff „Kip“ Leming (Bass) und Sandy Sklavin (Schlagzeug). 1981 legten Riot mit "Fire Down Under" laut dem Magazin „Rock Hard“ die „zu diesem Zeitpunkt wohl härteste amerikanischen Metal-Platte vor“. Nach weiteren Klassikern löste sich die Band Mitte der 1980er Jahre auf, fand aber schon 1987 wieder zusammen.
Es folgten zahlreiche Besetzungswechsel, so dass es irgendwann rund 20 aktive und ehemalige Mitglieder von Riot gab. Seit 2013 geht die Geschichte der Band mit Todd Michael Hall als neuem Sänger unter dem Namen Riot V weiter.

I was their sometimes sound-human back in the day (Thundersteel and The Privilege of Power) and did two tours of Japan with them. A great band then and still killing it today. Great live mix, by the way. These songs are hard to sing...incredible vocals here. Better drum sound than most of this series.

Unbelievable show. You guys sound better than ever. New album mean streets is amazing and should be up for a Grammy if it wasn’t a popularity contest. As good or better than any metal music out there today. Riot v’s best work to date. And best album since mark reale’s passing. Mark would be so proud of you guys.
