Prior to CS2, Surfing was one of if not the largest community game mode in the series. It was fun, competitive, and completely unique to the game's identity for 20 years.
But the release of a new game almost killed it and many are worried it might never recover.

@jejxkxk but he's right. You can ignore social media and turn off the news, but you still end up with companies asking $100 for some half baked monetised battle pass pay to win "AAA" slop. Or the example of the video, a "sequel" or "major update" to the game that is just worse in all the ways that matter (apart from new smoke grenades). If you haven't noticed the shocking downtrend in quality amongst every product and service in recent years, you are living under a rock. Its quite insane that a mcchicken from macdonalds that used to be 1 dollar and now should be 1.70 dollars because of inflation is actually something like 2.40 dollars. These are just a handful of examples

@RichRadd You know, I'm not sure! It's likely, considering that I have been playing CS on and off since the start. I was born in 1992, but I was playing CS with my step-dad and uncles as early as 2000. I remember pre-steam. CS was hosted on GameSpy! It's hard to recall all those little details, especially since I would eventually get way more into the CyberAthleticLeague side of things and then later quit gaming for a few years. I do remember all the silly maps and mods my friends and I would play late at night during the summers in ventrillo, though. Egypt. Rats. The HE tennis maps. 45hp knife maps like Legoland. Warcraft3 mod maps. All of the KZ maps. I really miss those guys. We all lost touch. We're all 30+ now. I remember one summer Circa 2004. I barely went outside, and I was just rotating CS, Diablo 2, Runescape. Longwinded but... speaking of good times :D

unfortunately valve does not give a single fuck about the near perfect movement source 1 gave or the community built around it, upgrading it into something less responsive and accurate wasn't a mistake or something they just looked over. it won't make them enough money for the amount of effort it would take to fix their shitty "new and improved" engine. making video games better with time is a thing of the past, at least we get to look at shiny reflections all over the maps now to distract us from the gameplay.

@@ToTheStars65 fr a lot of this community really needs to touch grass. I think its also the dearth of content that isnt comp or premier. A working server browser, some more of the old game modes like scoutsknives and a return of 5v5 unranked. Then we need to give out comp cooldowns for toxicity more readily, at least for a little while to force people to remember their worth as a human being isnt measured by their CS rating or comp rank. got into cs in 2015 and enjoyed the game a lot, but I met someone in matchmaking and he started surfing after our game. it absolutely changed my life and I absolutely would not stop surfing, and still do it quite frequently. a couple of notes I have about this vid (repster did a really good job with the main reasons for cs2 surf dying) in regards to surf as a whole: yes, people do take it that seriously. think of it as a speedrunning community, where people are constantly trying to innovate on new maps, or grind out small improvements on older maps. the best part about surfing is you don't have to be the best in the world to feel satisfaction, you can just enjoy the feeling of getting a new personal best. some of my favorite feelings is playing a map I haven't played in a while and destroying my time because I have improved so much since last time I played that map. the other major thing is the movement communities seem to be in a sort of limbo right now. i will say for myself, that I haven't been surfing as much recently because it feels like it won't be as enjoyable or gratifying until momentum mod comes out. if you don't know about momentum mod look it up, its basically a standalone surf game and is going to be amazing, it is just being done by a small dev team out of passion and they will slowly but surely put it out and it will most definitely revive interest in the gamemode. until then, its either buy counter strike source, struggle through cs2, or play on a much smaller community (tf2, cs 1.6, roblox etc)

I clocked up 5k hours on CSS solely playing community servers, scouts knives, gungame, breakfloor, zombie, dm, nades only, etc. When GO released that was all gone, so that's when I first started playing competitive and I've always hated it, all the sweaty camping, holding angles, nerdy nade lineups and microsecond timing etc was just never my play style. I just want to hold W and click heads. In fact I even switched to Battlefield 3 for several years because it was way more loose and fun.

SAME. Thats why I really miss "Flying scoutsman", 5v5 unranked and still spend a good portion of my time playing Casual. It gets tiresome telling the tryhards to chill tf out, its just a game, its supposed to be fun and if its making you angry and do actual WORK to even feel like its worthwhile maybe the problem isnt your teammates letting you down. Maybe its your attitude. I've pretty much abandoned Mirage. Its a drowning hazard with all the sweat in there. Luckily Office and Nuke have retained a bit of the fun-first culture from yesteryear. Though Nuke is really its own kind of tryhard haven, not for winning or lineups but for movement enthusiasts looking for clips like they're all gonna be the next FranzJ 😮‍💨

I can confirm that CSS was not only the best version of CS to surf on, but the best version of CS period. As someone who played CS since the WON days (before Steam), CSS simply provided me with the most fun both in community servers, and in a competitive environment playing in CEVO and ESEA. I will admit though, playing some of the old aim maps on 1.5/1.6 were a ton of fun, and the Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne server mods made the game absolutely absurd with all the things it added. I remember renting a server on 1.5, cancelling my payment after a month or 2, and then finding that they apparently forgot about it and left it up with full access to modify the server for over a year.

The type of people who make community mods and stuff are moving to the fortnite/epic, or roblox environment or just making their own games. It’s never been easier to make a game. Why make a free mod that’s liable to break when you can develop a mod in a monetized environment or your own game and self publish? When the source 2 environment lacks documentation, guides, support, and monetization? It’s the complete opposite of what source used to be.
@JerryO1995

@WhatAMagician 28 күн бұрын
@@JerryO1995 yea there wasn’t monetization for source but there were not a ton of competing monetized models. It wasn’t as easy to watch a KZfaq guide and make a game in unreal or unity. It is a completely different environment and the kinds of people who made these tools and resources for old source games are no longer captured by this ecosystem. It’s no longer the place where fun innovations happen. It’s a empty nearly abandoned mall in a death spiral while more and more stores close and less and less shops open up

When Sony messed with helldivers PSN login requirement, literally more than half the community left the game and gave negative reviews. But I guess people just keep giving CS2 free pass.

All pro surfing takes place in CS Source because the lighter client = more ticks = more speed and because other commands like cl_yawspeed exist which do not in GO and 2 which allow you to adjust the sensitivity of your turn binds. other factors like smaller player models also play a part in that. I don't see that changing any time soon. While it's nice for Valve to fix surfing in CS2, its mostly for casual surfers.

The server browser in CS Source could find thousands of servers in seconds on a shitty connection in 2005. And when you search with tags: literally instant search results from their database! All gungame servers found in the blink of an eye. It's unbelievable how bad the experience twenty years later is.

i actually haven't had the ramp bug happen to me that much, but the awful server browser makes it annoying to play on surf servers. The old server browser may not be great, but it worked and holds a lot of nostalgia.

lol i havent played for a long time. but i spent thousands of hours of my childhood playing cs 1.6. i remember how joining some some servers infects your client and makes you automatically advertise for that site in the chat. or even makes it so that what ever button u click on the menu connects you to that server. lots of crazy shit xD

Regarding the server browser, it's almost impossible to find any server you can connect to that is solid in any way. I play on EU server with t5-t8 maps which can be done in CS2, but the amount of ramp stutters is horrendours. I cannot say if it's servers/engines fault, but the state valve released the server browsing experience worst that it's ever been in any of their games, including HL1.

I know ill stand pretty alone in my opinion. but despite the problems with cs2, I enjoy it. and I enjoy the few surf servers I have. and only one is actually problematic with curved surf walls, im not the most try hard surfer. but most of the maps Ive played dont actually have issues of ramp glitches and snags. I do want my KZ back though I have yet to even play it on cs2. however, I hadn't played csgo in so long before it switched to cs2 that I cannot mentally compare the two on my own feelings. yes I played csgo for YEARS but being so detached actually helped me see it as a new game and not able to identify the specific nuances of the differences. again Im not defending Valve. but cs2 has been ALOT of fun for me to play recently. and as such I have a lot of hope for the next year or two years for them to kick it back into gear and see it grow for years to come. i hope.....
