I've learned this the hard way after swimming right into the rip somewhere in Australia. At the time I had no knowledge at all of the danger that I was in.Wild beach,no people,no lifeguards.Very soon I realized that trying to swim towards the beach has taken me farther out so I stopped swimming.The beach looked far away.There's got to be a way out of this I said to myself Braking waves looked far but suddenly very appealing.I began to swim towards them then out and had lived to tell the tale.Looking back I can't believe how calm I was at the point when I realized that today i may drown.Usually I panic.

Something similar happened to me on south beach with a friend who I convinced to swim out to a sand bar. The path quickly changed and got really deep on the way back. We found ourselves swimming for our lives. Repeatedly getting hit by huge waves & couldn’t feel the bottom. A terrible feeling. I seriously thought that I’d be responsible for his death & possibly my own since he wasn’t that great of a swimmer & had Asthma. I Started to tired & treaded water for a bit & looked back & heard him say my name before going under once. Then he came back up and we both kept swimming & made it back to the shore extremely exhausted. Just laid there in the sand

Many people don’t understand how dangerous water can be!

This is why learning to lay float is very important! You can save your energy if you just learn. No excuse not to learn this technique.

Best video on rip currents I’ve seen. Concise yet packed with plenty of visual aids. The info on what to do when caught in a rip current is helpful, especially the suggestion to tread water: stop fighting the current and tread water until you no longer feel it pulling you out. Then swim parallel to the beach to get out of the current and try to alert the lifeguard.

What they don't tell you in this is rip current can be up to miles long and also they can form in decent sized lakes most lakes here in Texas have them I've experienced it first hand jumping off the boat by the time I surface I'm 15 meters away from it be safe everyone

Ya know i think I got caught in one when I was a kid. Very young and little, swam out alone. I could swim at the time but I tried fighting it not knowing what it was. Got lucky cause I think it wasn’t that big or maybe I accidentally got out of it on my own, ended up being sucked out to sea then got dragged back to the beach by the waves and face planted on the sand at the end of it. I guess I got lucky, like the sea taught me a lesson of caution and then gave me a good slap to remember it by the end of it.

I’m never going more than knee high anymore in the beach. I can’t swim and I easily panic when I’m in chest high water. After knowing this, I’d be happy basking on the sun on the sand droning my pina colada 🍹

I was swimming in Mexico (chest high water) and all of a sudden, I couldn't feel the ground under me and the water around me was dragging me deeper into the sea. I am not a great swimmer and luckily, I was able to be pushed back near the shore. It was definitely a mini rip current but it was enough to steer me away. I now only go waist high and never more. Also, swimming seemed impossible at the moment and mini waves kept hitting my face where it was hard to breath. Some people, myself included back then, underestimate how strong a body of water can be.

I've experienced these (mild ones I bet) and never knew they could be this dangerous. I just thought it was freaky how at one moment you're in the shore and when you least expect it people look like ants.

My near death experience in Canggu Bali, no lifeguards, and I waved but no one saw me. Glad I thought about swimming to the right to surfers that were pretty far, and then after a bit swimming, I was out of the ripcurrent and could come out myself.

Fun fact the Great lakes have rip currents as well.

I was caught in one when I was in Mexico last summer. The waves were huge, so I kept getting knocked down and then grabbed by a rip. It was really scary, but the water was shallow so I just stood up and ran to the shore

Ugh, this happened to me in Durban, South Africa when I was 8. It was a very strong rip and took me way out fast. Fortunately my dad noticed and came out to get me. Scared me to death...never again!

My dad got caught in a rip current but managed to swim straight against it back to shore.

So that's the traumatic thing I experienced when I was 8😭I was on vacation in a foreign area and we were at the beach, I was a decent swimmer at 8 other than the fact that I have asthma, and we didnt know there was a current, so stupid 8 year old me thought it would be a good idea to go really deep into the ocean, probably about 10 ft away from other people.. I got pretty bored of being there so I tried to swim back but the water kept pulling me back and I didn't think anything of it until it pulled me deeper in, so I just swam for my life as hard and aggressive as I could, luckily the current wasnt strong enough so I made it to the shore, now i have a horrible fear of swimming in deep waters😍amazing

i tried to swim to the isle of white on a lads holiday when i was 18...tide changed after maybe 30 mins swimming..... ended up nearly a mile down shore when i managed to get back in..... yeah, don't do that !!!!

Wow So that's what it was. My girlfriend and I swam out and we were suddenly taken out to sea by the current. We tried to swim back and quickly realized we couldn't. So we just went with it. Soon we were out by a shimp boat. The guys waved to us. They must have known we were in trouble but we didn't. They sent a guy with a motor boat. He threw us a line and then towed us to the side and towards shore. His boat engine konked out and he was trying to fix it. We waved bye and started to swim towards shore. Then the shark fins showed up. They were circling us. Then dolphins came and sharks left. Eventually the current took us back in. When we got back, we learned that people had caught a 4 foot and a little shark. We had a blast. We were too stupid to know we were in trouble except when the shark fins were circling us. And we both had a hell of a sunburn.

I try to tell parents all the time ..they act like the Ocean is a big swimming pool..umm not...

Actually...as i look at the vid i realize we was in many but swimed not into is so we didnt even felt then that much O.o

Anyone looking for Memorial Day 2021 if you have to keep your feet on the bottom do not go deep enough to need these videos ○ This is a demonstration by someone whom can handle much more • Study today reveals not to look for what you think it is supposed to look like as they vary and the water has to go back out anyway so even where there is not a Ripp you can be taken out away from the beach without realizing it so best is to always have flotation so that you can rest and not panic; Some is helpful but not any excess-a skilled amateur. It all comes down to a few basic principles

If you are a good swimmer and can float, there is no reason whatsoever to be fearful of rip currents.

I got in 80 cm water rip and it was hard to keep standing .... imagine if i was in 1.90 cm 😆

I am having a hard time understanding how did poeple die from rip currents. Not to disrespect all those lost ones because i just don't understand but it seems like rip currents only pull you 25 meters away from the shore averagely and become relatively weak after that, you can always stay calm and swim back or swim out of the current. Did all the one who got killed by the current didn't know how to swim because it appear that rip current do not pull you down.
