"Deus Arrakis" marks another studio album from the electronic legend in 2022. Sadly, Klaus Schulze passed away in April of the same year.
Through his collaboration with Hans Zimmer for the Oscar-winning soundtrack to the remake of the classic film "Dune", desert fever has broken out again in Klaus Schulze. "I needed more of that 'Spice,'" Schulze recounts. "Then there was no stopping me, I just played and played... and at the end of my second, again very private 'Dune' journey, I realized: 'Deus Arrakis' is another salute to Frank Herbert and, by extension, to the great gift of life."
Since his beginnings in bands like Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel or in his over 50 solo albums from "Irrlicht" to "Mirage", "X" and "Dune" to "Farscape", "Kontinuum", "Silhouettes" and now "Deus Arrakis", in his productions under the pseudonym Richard Wahnfried or the numerous film scores and collaborations with artists like Arthur Brown, Michael Shrieve, Rainer Bloss, Lisa Gerrard or most recently Hans Zimmer: Klaus Schulze has always remained true to his unmistakable way of creating music and yet always remained open to the new, the innovative, the experimental.
In addition to his musical greatness, Klaus Schulze will also be remembered as a person who always remained humble with statements like his guiding principle: "It's not about me, it's about the music." he was always modest.

Klaus Schulze was probably my main musical influence at the age of 15-17 and - together with Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream - inspired me to play synthesizers myself. Later I got more and more into Stockhausen and the "new music" or "avantgarde" music or however one wants to call it, but the music of Klaus Schulze has stayed with me all life, I bought all of his albums, be it on LP or CD and saw him in concert several times - and this was always interesting as he improvised a lot so that the concerts were always different. What I also liked about him was that although there are certainly weaker and stronger albums throughout his career, he has always kept a certain musical level and did not become "commercial" or compromise his music to sell more. As opposed to Tangerine Dream whose output in the late eighties and nineties was often unbearably cheesy and gaudy for my taste, only to recover again in the last 12 or so years (of course they can play and release what they want, it was just not for me). So the death of Klaus Schulze is really a big loss for me. As most "fans" I think that his classic groundbreaking LPs from the seventies are still his best, but there are also lots of musical pearls in the later years. And I am really glad that while "Beyond Recall" from 1991 had been his last album relaesed on vinyl for many years, lots of his later titles originally only available on CD have been reissued as LPs over the last years. Including the fantastic "Kontinuum" from 2007 which I think is on a par with his masterworks from the seventies.

Thank you for this info, I have just checked the Kontinuum release and enjoyed very much. It will be on my buying list. I never saw KS live, never had the opportunity, and confess that got lost of him since the 2000s, more or less, but his proposals from the 70s, specially Timewind, are regular presences in my living room. Saw Tangerine Dream live but left before the end, it was not for me anymore. Best, j

@@Jose-ku2ek Yes, Tangerine Dream from 1988 (when Chris Franke left the group) to about 2005 was quite weak also to my taste, but in recent years they recovered. I saw them in Hamburg four years ago and was quite impressed, it was almost like in the seventies again. Try out their latest LPs, they are really not bad, although there are no founding members left now.

Thank you for the recommendation! I've only started listening to Klaus own music in the past year even though I've been listening to Tangerine Dream, avantgarde, electronic for way longer. The artwork of the album and sleeves is gorgeous plus I am a big fan of the first 4 Dune books. Dig your glasses!

Klaus Schulze was a real pioneer, and an innovator. His contribution to the world of music is unquestionable. In my own life he was a big presence in my 20s and 30s, as I discovered his elegant, minimalist, and beautiful music. I would meditate to it, bring calm to my life. I still bring out Timewind, Dune, Irrlicht, etc to remind me of those days and his influence on me.

Just bought this, along with 7 out of the 11 Dark side of moog lps! I learned that Klaus collaborated with Hans Zimmer soundtrack of Dune when I read the album’s description on amazon, even the Wikipedia page doesn’t mention Klaus as a contributor to the soundtrack, pretty sad.

Michael, thank you for bringing this album to my attention. I have been enamored of the Dune cycle since I first read it over 40 years ago. I have reread it many times and watched all of the film and broadcast adaptations. Somehow, I had overlooked Klaus Schulze's work inspired by this cycle. It is a pleasure to experience the works that this quintessential scifi masterpiece continues to inspire. Decades later, lifetimes later, the spice must flow. RIP, Frank and Klaus.

I wanted to add - what I also like is that on this last album, Wolfgang Tiepold can be heard again on his cello, albeit on an older recording Klaus Schulze simply found in his studio and integrated into his new work. The sound of Tiepold's cello has always fitted Schulze's music perfectly as to me, and I think that ALL Schulze pieces and albums with the collaboration of Wolfgang Tiepold are great. I even experienced them together on stage once at the Sound Art festival in Osnabrück and that was just fantastic, their mutual understanding was almost on a telepathic level, it seemed. Especially in the encore. Tiepold came on stage and started to improvise. Schulze was sitting between his synthesizers and just listened to him for some time and then quietly set in with some accompanying chords. It was so beautiful and simply naturally flowing, everything perfectly fitting as if composed, but 100% improvised, quite impressive. It was recorded and then later released as a piece called "Tracks of Desire" on the live album from this event - but CD only, sorry. Here it is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/graIf8R71NXamHU.html

Much to the annoyance of my parents in the late 60s I warmed to electronic music with Perry and Kingsley, then came Schulz and continued with John Keating. But it was Tomita that took me on an electronic journey that has lasted 50 years and still buying particularly those albums you recommend…I’ve not be disappointed.

'Blackdance' was my introduction to KS in late '74 or so, and I was immediately hooked. Admittedly I was less interested in the direction he took after 'Live' in 1980. But even though I followed his music less faithfully over the next twenty years I never lost touch with what he was doing during that the, and I was really enjoying the music he started producing in the last decade of his life. 'Deus Arrakis' is a truly fine farewell from a gifted musician and a leading light of electronic music for fifty years. RIP Klaus...you will be missed for years to come...

I'm a huge Tangerine Dream fan myself and Klaus Schulze was an extraordinary electronic musician. Body Love is one of Klaus Schulze's best performances. TD's Electronic Meditation was somewhat before my time but definitely a classic. Of Tangerine Dream's early work, Cyclone and Atem are favorites of mine. I own around 25 or so of their albums (CDs). Those Vinyl LP's you are displaying are fantastic. I definitely need to look into more of Klaus Schulze's work. Dune is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. I have yet to see the new version but I intend to. RIP Klause Schulze and Edgar Froese.

Very nice post. Thank you. I understand where you're coming from with regards to vinyl. But unless Klaus Schulze recorded this on an analog medium, say a reel-to-reel tape recorder, a digital medium is always preferred for a digital recording. It does not make any sense (except from a commercial point of view, obviously) to press a digital recording into a vinyl record. Analog for analog; digital for digital, that's my view. Greetings from Stockholm. PS: I love your glasses, btw /DS

Sound is sound. There is no difference whether it is produced mechanically or electronically. One cannot say either that a harpsichord sound is dated just because the instrument is 300 years old. Sound is just a physical phenomenon. The only thing you can say is that you personally do not like this or that sound.
