Isle of Man TT podium finisher Paul Smart has died following a road collision involving his motorbike.
Smart's greatest claim to fame was winning the Imola 200 on a Ducati in 1972, however, he also tasted success at the Isle of Man TT in the late '60s and early 1970s.
His first visit to the TT podium came in 1967 as he took his Norton Dominator to second place to Triumph's John Hartle in that year's 750cc Production race.
He was back on the same step in 1969's edition of the 750cc Production TT, again finishing behind a Triumph, this time piloted by Malcolm Uphill.
The final success at the Isle of Man TT came in 1970's Junior TT, this time finishing ahead of Uphill by over two minutes.
Paul's last TT appearance, in 1974, ended in disappointing retirements from both the Senior and Formula 750 TT Races.
Away from the Isle of Man Paul found great success on short circuits, competing for Triumph in the inaugural years of the Formula 750 championship, as well as tasting the life on the road as part of the 'Continental Circus,' earning seven Grand Prix podium results along the way.
Paul Smart leaves behind wife Maggie and children Scott and Paula.

A few years ago, two elderly gentlemen came into my pub for a meal. They were riding brand new Ducati’s. One of the men was a very interesting character who came from New Zealand and owned the only running (at that time) Britten and was off to the classic TT later in the year where Bruce Anstey was to ride it. The other guy was quiet but yet seemed familiar in some way. I was sure I knew him. Being a motorcyclist I sat talking to them and showed them a few places of interest and bike routes for their next days run out. The next night we were talking and after a few drinks it transpired that their bikes had been lent to them by Ducati following their visit earlier to the factory. 🤔🤔🤔🤔 The penny dropped….. Only the great get the honor of having a Ducati named in their honour. Paul Smart. I will never forget the stories of his racing days and his famous brother in law. Great rider, great human being. Sad to here the news and condolences to family and friends.

It was my absolute privilege to meet Paul when he raced the Triumph Trident at the South African TT in 1970 (or maybe 1972). He was with Ray Pickerel (BSA Rocket 3); Agostini (MV Augusta); Mike Hailwood (Honda); Redman (Yamaha believe it or not); John Cooper; Rod Gould; Phil Read and some local chaps Tommy Johns; Kork Ballington; Rod Gray; Paul Aitken; Kelvin Thomas> Fantastic racing in those days

It's sore hard to see the names and faces we knew leave us. What a thrill it was for this Ducati fan to hear of Smart's great Imola victory, even though I sympathized with Spaggiari's 2nd place finish which he repeated the following year. Time will eventually turn all of us into just entries in history's scrapbook, but here's a salute to all those who passed the finish line before we did.

RIP Paul and thx for all You've done for the motorcycle world and for the brand Ducati ! It was a great pleasure and honor for me to meet Paul at the old paddock of the Nürburgring in 2006. I asked for signing his autograph on my helmet. While he signed my helmet we got into a conversation about Ducatis and the old Nürburgring. Half an hour later ( ! ) I had learned so much from and about a great sportsman. A great gentleman ! My helmet with his autograph " Paul Smart #16 " is stored savely in my garage. Cincere condolences to his family !

I bought my ZZR1100 from Paul Smart in 1990 when he was running Kawasaki Paddock Wood in Kent, In my excitement I forgot my gloves when I came to collect my new bike, he lead me over to a carousel of all the new gloves and told me to chose a pair, wouldn`t take payment for them. RIP.

Hi Gary - I worked for Paul in Paddock Wood when I left school while I was waiting for my mechanical apprenticeship to materialise. Paul was pleased with bike knowledge and would let me move & clean the show room bikes, he would make me pump up a few tyres that would loose air due to punctures etc, one day I told him I could break those tyres and fix the punctures and was very please when I did them. He had the famous Ducati on the shelf that I would clean & dust once in while, a mutual friend told me he still had it at home in his garage - I guess Scott will look after it now. I have in my garage a Honda ATC 70 that was brought from Paul Smart Honda in the 80’s and the PDI sheet is filled out and signed by Paul. Paul was also very kind in helping me recover one of his bikes I crashed into a hedge one morning on my way to work. So very saddened when I heard to news last week, a great man with a good heart RIP Paul.

I remember when I was a kid, and way to young to ride a motorcycle, that Paul Smart, with his spectacular riding style, was on the cover of our Swedish magazine MC-nytt (MC news). I read these magazines cover to cover and was inspired to the extent that I have been riding MC since 1975. Paul is sadly missed!

He certainly put Ducati on the map with the Imola win, and they’ve really looked back. A friend of mine bought a new original green frame 750SS not long after, and I bought a yellow tank 750S at the same time because of the win. At 78 I thought he must have died of natural causes, sadly not the case.

We in the racing world have an expression when riders pass on, "They have gone under the Chequered flag!" Will they return? Absolutely!!! R.I.P. means Resrrection In Paradise according to the Bible's promise in John, Chapter 5, verses 28, 29. I look forward to seeing many who I raced against return to a cleansed earth under a heavenly Kingdom. Paul Smart, Mike Hailwood, Bill Ivy, Peter Williams and many more. Happy Trails Ahead!
