My Pit Boss 1150 went up in flames today. I don't know the reason why, it's been smoking for over 4 hours without an issue. Guess we'll see what Pit Boss has to say. Sad day.

Update - Pit Boss upgraded me to a 1600 at no cost! Pit Boss is the mvp for sure!! Videos in the channel using the 1600 as well as going deeper into what happened with the 1150! Upon further research, the Err code the smoker gave is for the temp probe having an issue which would make sense as to why the auger kept spinning creating a large fire and eventually catching the brisket. I thought it was a grease fire at first but that Err code looks to be the cause as to why the smoker kept feeding it pellets. IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU so be careful.

@L&L Ranch BBQ I'm not sure that a constant pellet feed would start a fire unless maybe they had been feeding for an extended time. My pellet grill has a feature where once you get past the highest temp selection (500 degrees) it goes into "Full" mode where the auger continues to run until the grill reaches maximum temp. Unless your grill got extremely hot from a runaway auger, that in itself would not be my primary suspicion for the fire. My neighbor has a Pit Boss with a feature where you can slide the flame shield over to open up the firepot for searing. Even when he's not using that feature he can look down and see flames under the drip tray. His grill has caught on fire twice. Yours did much better than his. If I could post a picture I would show you. By the time he woke up in the morning the fire had already burned out.

I have reached out to quite a bit of owners of this smoker and most are informing me that this is an issue they themselves are experiencing as well. Others have stated that they got this issue when using the app. I don't think the app would explain the error code nor the auger still feeding it pellets but anything can happen with electronics.

Thank you for the kind words!! I've seen on facebook where Pit Boss replaced their 1150 with a 1600 no problem for smaller issues. I'm unsure if they were sponsored or what but I figured they'd do something similar for me. I might just switch to a different brand to be honest. Not the first person this has ever happened to. May need to do little more than clean it all up, re-do it with some high temp paint, and carry on. But it can definitely sour your experience when something like that happens. I've only had my 1150 a couple of months, but it's been great. I put the insulated cover on it for below freezing cooks, and it works great. The nice thing today is there are several brands of grills to choose from if you don't want to go with another Pit Boss. But hopefully PB comes through for you on warranty. Often the cost of a grill to them is more than worth the PR - especially for someone with a channel and followers. :) Good luck!

Thanks my man. Personally I don't think I'd trust it. Looking at the code it gave me Err, it appears that the temp probe got an error mid cook and I'd imagine if I were asleep, the house might have caught on fire. I haven't sent an email to Pit Boss yet, perhaps tomorrow and see what they say.

This is why I ALWAYS shop vac the entire grill especially the fire box and the pellet hopper, I scrub the grill temp probe and make sure it’s super clean, and scrub the inside of the grill of all grease after every single cook. Even if I’m just smoking salmon for 45 min. Yes it’s a pain in the ass but it keeps my pellet smoker tip top. Have only had issues with the thermocouple cable but that was cuz I bought a floor model. Problem free since
@ElSenorBbq

Same here, in my case though the auger kept feeding it pellets and it did not stop. If you look through some of the comments down here, others have had the same issue with a "runaway" auger creating fires. This wasn't just a simple grease fire or anything like that.

@@ElSenorBbq sorry that happened man, can’t imagine how frustrating that is. I have a cuisinart woodridge pellet grill, I wanted a pit boss so bad but my wife got ours on clearance at Walmart for $200. Aside from the thermocouple issue and then one time the fan wouldn’t engage I’ve had no issues. My biggest fear is a runaway auger. @@ElSenorBbq What is there reasoning for not replacing it? If the auger continually fed pellets then the control panel is clearly faulty, and they are liable. I thought "grease fire" while watching this video but your comment about the err code makes perfect sense now. Any device that is thermostat controlled can have other issues when a controlling device fails. Luckily no house fire for you and a good thing you were on top of things during your cook. They need to resolve this issue and shut down the power when any error occurs. Hope they help you out. @L&L Ranch, I got my 850 mainly due to your informative posts and fully encourage Pit Boss to get you back in service if they have to helicopter drop a new 1150 at your ranch! I work in process automation and a common safety feature is to detect an input fault and stop feeding energy. In this case, a thermocouple fault is easy to detect (low mV)…and stop turning the auger! I would also recommend not allowing the phone app to change temperature settings as too much can go wrong. Pit Boss really needs to address home safety.

Anything else from PB about the warranty? That thing went from 270 to out of control. I think you had two different issues with the sequence of operation. This exact thing happened to a friend of mine that had a 1600 PB. He had a "run away" auger and the fan never shut down. This caused an extreme high temp in the barrel and the probe "did not" shut things down....it ALL came down to a "faulty" controller. He had to remove it and send it in to PB. They got back to him and said the relays were bad on the board causing the probe NOT to sense the heat and the auger NOT to shut down and the fan to keep running. They ended up sending him a new controller...and everything that was electrically operated in the smoker. They would NOT replace the entire smoker that was only 6 months old. This is all too similar to what happened to you brother. I have the 1150 as well about six months old. So far so good. I have a flame sensor in the barrel that will shut off ALL the power going to the smoker. This was an add on that I did after I purchased it from Lowes....Good luck on your endeavors

This sounds EXACTLY what happened and I talked to Pit Boss today once more and it appears they are wanting to handle it just as your friend. Luckily, I took a screenshot of the graph lytics showing 180* across the board, and when I changed it to 270, it did exactly as what you mentioned. Like a runaway auger. It went up to 270, DID NOT SETTLE, kept on climbing and climbing until it eventually caused this fire. Pit Boss said they rarely if ever send out a new smoker. I told them when they were having controller issues with the first 1150s, I was one of the only ones trying to offer people solutions so people can keep smoking on. Same deal when they created a new update and showing almost weekly how good of a smoker it is until that day. I figured they'd at least send a replacement or something given the publicity I've sent them. I understand that's how things work, just a real bummer my man.

When a device fails, it can fail in one of two states. It can cause a shutdown when there was no actual problem, or it can fail to detect a problem and thus fail to shutdown. When we are using only one RTD, we are prone to failures. I am not sure what action should be taken by the controller. On one hand, allowing the pellets in the burn pot to burn off while adding no new pellets makes sense. However, perhaps the logic is different. Pellets can burn in the auger, and I assume that fire can make its way to the hopper. I would suggest that if there is going to be a fire, it is best to contain it within the grill. Although there may be no fire, perhaps the safest course of action is actually to start a fire and contain it than to assume that there is no fire, and have that fire burn in what might be an uncontrolled manner in the hopper.

I went outside and just as I got there the doors blew open and I had to call the fire department out to put it out as I had to try to hold the doors on the best I could to not let it catch my fence or gazebo on fire. They were about 10 feet away but the flames almost were hitting them. Turns out the grease from the protein mixed with the ash in the fire chamber and went up in flames and did it quickly. Walmart picked it up and refunded me the money but I put a review on Walmart and the Pit Boss website about the missing step in the maintenance in the manual and how it was dangerous. They never posted it. Pit Boss lost me with that. Glad nobody got hurt.

That is crazy!!! Glad everyone is safe! I clean out the insides of the pit boss before each video we do, especially when using wagyu because of the amount of grease it pours out. I was able to take a screenshot of the temperature graph pit boss has on their app, 180* all the way no problem. When I bumped it to 270, the temps just sky rocketed and never settled to 270 so I feel now that it may have been a controller glitch.

Operator error. Grease fire. Cooking meat directly over the sear plate, even with it closed. Grease drips thru the slots into the firepot and bottom of the barrel. Grease was dripping thru slots, fire ignites it and it burns. Seen it many times on the drip pans that top and bottom plates are both slotted.

Except for the fact that this is 100% incorrect. Probably didn't watch the whole video either. A grease fire would not account for the probe temp error causing it to continue feeding it pellets. The other thing I mentioned in the video is before each video I clean the bottom of the barrel to prevent this from happening, especially with wagyu. Nevermind the fact that I've done so many cooks on this thing including wagyu that this has yet to be an issue. So spare me your 2 cents with what you feel was the issue but this wasn't it.

A $2.50 disposable aluminum pan would have prevented a $650 mistake. All fatty meats can cause grease fires, so you want to put it in a roasting tray that has a rack in it. That will keep your tallow from going to the fire gods but also make it easier to transport the meat from grill to table, and there won't be any clean-up because the grease stayed in the pan, keeping the meat tender.
@ElSenorBbq
@ElSenorBbq Жыл бұрын
The problem with that logic is that it wasn't the meat that caused the fire. If you had read the pinned comment, you'd see that Pit Boss did their own investigation into it and found that the controller was at fault here. You think Pit Boss would replace and upgrade a smoker at no charge for no reason? I had to show them data that the controller captures, pictures of the inside of the barrel, there was no grease in or around the fire pot itself, they said that a grease fire almost melts the stack because of how the fire wants to spread with a grease fire and so on. It came out to be that the glitch happened on the controller itself where it kept feeding it pellets thinking that the ambient temp probe wasn't reading the actual temp inside the barrel. It's amazing to me how many people come to this conclusion even after explaining in the video what happened and having the pinned comment regarding the updates to it. Pit Boss has an amazing customer service, I think most people here think I'm trashing them but that's not the case at all. I recommend going through the comments for updates as almost all youtube videos do. Hell I even have a follow up video as well so please don't jump to conclusions with the whole, "A $2.50 aluminum pan" it wouldn't have made a difference in this case.
@michaelchilds-qn3bl
@michaelchilds-qn3bl Жыл бұрын
Pit Boss is good shit no doubt. I'm telling you it was the meat, likely both. From what I observed, you had a greasy piece of meat on a malfunctioning grill. The pan would have worked because even if the fire was continuously being fed, it would not have combusted above the broiler plate without extra fuel (fat drippings). Also, the fat wouldn't be around the fire pot because it would burn up. You also had flame on top of the broiler plate, cmon. Listen, at the end of the day, don't leave fire unattended. Even if it's a fancy "controlled" burn, Murphy is going to sneak around the corner when you're gone. Imagine if you went to Walmart, and that happened, much less sleeping through the night as some do, bad idea. Bad logic is assuming because you got a 1600, that everything is good to go. $2.50 of prevention AND checking on it is worth $650 of cure. Also, I watched all of the videos, and I could care less about the comments because I saw it for myself, hence both videos.

@@michaelchilds-qn3bl my man, if it were the meat, why did it only do it just a bit after setting it to 270 vs having it 4 hours at just 180? Once set to 270, the temperature never settled, it just climbed and climbed and never even tried to settle once. All this info was taken from Pit Boss direct that they needed to see what exactly happened. Grease fires aren't covered under warranty period which is exactly why I brought that up. I've done idk how many long cooks on the 1150 for hours and hours and so have thousand of other 1150 owners. It also threw that temp probe code, something I've never seen before. The fire was going to happen, sure the meat doesn't help but regardless, that fire was happening due to a malfunction within the controller. It sucks for sure and again, the meat certainly didn't help but it's not like we all turn on the smokers for hours and hours on a random day without any meat inside. When you buy something at this price, you have to trust the equipment especially with the updated controller they sent out. And even then, I kept track of everything including the app which is why I went outside in the first place because it didn't make sense to me that the smoker was up to temp that quick I talk about this on the video as well). If you look at the back of the barrel, the fire came from the back side, not the actual grease tray itself. After the meat caught on fire sure that'll happen on almost any meat even chicken for that matter. Even on a tray, the way the flame rolled over from the back and over the grate, it would have still hit the meat. It is what it is but I have yet to have an issue with the 1600 and I hope I never do. I don't do the whole set it and forget it and fall asleep, that is just careless.

@ElSenorBbq I'm impressed that it fed that much in there. Thats a lot of damn pellets to create such heat. So yeah, it was both but mostly the controller. Well the issue wasn't the grease that created the fire but it also didn't help either. Pit Boss did an investigation into this and did indeed find the controller to be at fault. I have alot more hours onto the 1150, more than what most people will have and not once had an issue including wagyu meats. Your comment does address an issue but the problem with this is that you lose absolute almost your entire real estate by doing what you are suggesting. Putting it to the far right I have tested to have a 75* temp higher than commanded because of the back pressure before leaving the stack. The last thing is I would encourage pit boss to use an actual heat deflector over the fire pot and can be slid out when wanting to do a sear plate over just having a sear plate that has cervices where grease can drip down. We aren't smoker engineers but we can simply inform pit boss of the issues that rise. For me, it ended up being the controller itself. Hope this helps answer some questions or doubts you've had! Cheers!

I think the crappy controller not regulating the heat very accurately, and the sear feature not blocking the open flame are what cause the fires. I'm leaning towards a RecTeq 700 or 1250 to replace the Pit Boss. I've only had this for a few years and it will be the shortest lived grill I've ever had. I have a series 3 Copperhead nearly two years now, Old analog controller, no WiFi, and never a problem. 39 outside now and I'm smoking chuck roast. To me a cabinet smoker is the way to go. I'm looking to upgrade to a Copperhead 5 for a little more room. I had a Pro 4 from Pit Boss with their PID WiFi. I found it to be a bit wonky so I gave it to my granddaughter. I. personally am not a fan of the slide and sear. The Pit Boss Sportsman 5 and the even bigger 7 may be an option for you. Again old school analog controller. If you want slide and sear and WiFi check out the Camp Chef Woodwind models. Their WiFi is better than Pit Boss's. If you can live without WiFi Green Mountain makes an excellent choice as does RecTec. Their WiFi controllers are, from what I've read and seen on KZfaq, are pretty darn good. For a grill I have the Camp Chef Deluxe 24 without WiFi, but has PID, and that temp controller and their probes match my Maverick really spot on. My biggest problem with my Camp Chef is getting the smoke flavor I want. I put is on high smoke and she's a pellet hog and only a 15 pound hopper. I'm going to try and use a pellet tube. She's a summer time grill here in South Dakota without a heat blanket. If you really want, in my opinion, the best smoker, get a 22" Weber Smokey Mountain. I've had an 18" for 12-15 years, best ever. I've added a few mods to make it easier to use. Sorry this has been so long. I wish you well in your hunt for a replacement if necessary.

Hey John, I had a vertical smoker as well and have a video of it here comparing the 1150 vs the vertical. Vertical never gave me problems either although I was a bit scared of the grease fires reported going into the electronics right underneath. That's why Pit Boss changed the location of the controller. I may look into the RecTeq since that is the one almost everyone is recommending.

Man idk I think it could’ve been just an isolated incident where grease was able to reach the flame somehow. Hell, I’d scrape the paint off spray it down and maybe move it away from the house a bit and use it. Had my Trager for at least 5 years and have had very little problems. Things can happen with any pellet smoker. Even if no liquid grease hits the flame, vaporized grease certainly could. That heat deflector/ sear pan gets way hotter than the set temp and even hotter when it’s trying to raise the temp considerably.
@ElSenorBbq

I talked to Pit Boss and sent them all the pictures. They said this didn't look like a grease fire either. I also sent a picture of the temperature graph and it was fine at 180 for 4 hours straight, bumped it to 270 and it never settled at 270. They said it most likely had a runaway auger after resetting the temp. I should have an update soon but they did tell me they will get me going asap.
@jeffclark5024
@jeffclark5024 2 жыл бұрын
@@ElSenorBbq cool, hopefully they hook you up. With all due respect, it most certainly was a grease fire. The flames coming off the brisket and the grease underneath it is what burned the paint off your grill. If I’m not mistaken that grill has a spot to open up the sear pan to get direct flame for searing. That’s a path to the flame even if it’s closed it could be dripping grease.
@ElSenorBbq
@ElSenorBbq 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffclark5024 That's what I thought at first. The brisket obviously caught on fire and stayed with flames going on. That is not where the fire originated. If you look at the barrel, you can see where the flames came from towards the back, not through the sear plate. Another thing is that the pictures I sent to Pit Boss was with everything removed and there was no signs of grease in the fire pot, around the bottom of the barrel or the like. Plus, 4 hours straight of no issues but as soon as I put it to 270 it goes up in flames? There are other things Pit Boss looks for to confirm grease fires and this did not meet those things.

I thought so too but after troubleshooting it with Pit Boss and giving them all the details they needed including a snapshot of how the controller was working, the ambient probe temp had a glitch where it kept feeding it pellets because it thought the temp was low. It fed it pellets to try and get the temps up and created a fire. Pit boss even had me send them pictures of the barrel to ensure it wasn't a grease fire otherwise they wouldn't have covered the warranty. Not only did they just cover it, but they upgraded me to a 1600.

I've put on 18lb wagyu briskets in here without much issue. Mainly because on the top rack, there is some room for brisket but as it cooks, it swells up and hits the top of the barrel scoring the meat quite a bit. I may just fix it up and keep it for now but I doubt I'll do any overnight cooks with it. It's not the fat that bothers me, it was glitch in the controller other commenters have had issues with that causes a "runaway auger" and it appears that is exactly what happened to me as well. Bummer but it is what it is, I have something new coming hopefully next week so hoping for a better experience.
