Get the sony a7iii. The HLG2 (PP10) is far and away the ultimate color profile. it's almost the same amount of dynamic range as SLOG, but is far easier to grade, and can be used straight out of the camera if its really necessary.

At first I was obsessed with the thought that I got to upgrade my camera/gear constantly but thanks to guys like you I've learned not to care too much about gear but focus on improving my ability to use any camera as well as possible!

Ah, it sure looks like a workhorse with those scratches and dents! I'm gonna keep my A7III for a while longer and then sell my A7R whenever it drops a camera that I feel is worth upgrading too!

You're the reason I've stayed with sony. Teaching all those little things. Please do a video on zone autofocus. I compare my A7iii with every new camera on the market. It just can't be beat.

Dear Sony.... we are STILL waiting for the A7 SIII. I've got a lot of Sony e-mount lenses, but I am thinking about switching to BlackMagic 6K, which has an EF mount...😏 p.s. Still very happy with the A7III. Sure the 8 bit isn't wonderful, the screen is crap, but just like you said... get it right in camera an it looks awesome! Nice video James!

I feel you on the lens selection. honestly as a previous canon owner i just adapted all of the lenses to sony system because of price. now with the bmpcc 6k and other options using ef glass its a happy accident for me 😅. I am curious about the a7siii, but i keep looking into the GH5 because of its bit rate.

@@dna8269 you guys really want a bmpcc? do you know how big the files are? have to create a small rig for it with a ssd, battery pack, pull focus if you have a gimbal and attachments. it sounds like a pain for run and gun shoots that the a7iii does so well

@@sungkim465 yeah i'd roll with a 4k even though the 6k is sick just because the file sizes are obscene. Stabilized lens on a handheld rig with some weight to it is a good handheld setup..i actually use a cage and rig for my a7iii too because the extra weight is nice. It's definitely not as convenient as an a7iii, but grading 12 bit and not having to deal with the bizarre shit that occurs in Sony 8 bit footage is worth it to me

I just bought myself an a7sii coming from an iPhone so definitely an upgrade for me lol..the a7sii has been a great game changer for me and coming from an iPhone let me say it has opened many doors of creativity for me. I hear you when you said it forces your creativity when you have little to work with and have too do everything manually..my a7sii is my first mirrorless camera and full frame! Thx for all the great content man. You’ve been a great inspiration and only pushing the limits on creativity..KEEP EM ROLLIN #a7sii all the way !!!

Been trying to get around to watching the rest of this for a while now. Some top knowledge in there and I had huge issues with 8-bit s log too so I switched to cine a while back. Obviously, we’re all interested to see what kind of heat the a7siii packs. Also really like how you talk about using the limitations as part of learning and pushing yourself. Too many of us buy new gear just because it’s “new”

im shooting on an a7iii as an "a" cam and just picked up an a6600 with a 18-105mm as my "b" cam. The only two lenses i have for the a7iii are the 50 1.8 and the 16-35 f4. love the vids dude. youve helped me more than you know along my filmmaking journey.

Been shooting with two A6300 for the past four years and I know exactly how to get the most out of it! Learned a lot the same way you did, like grading shitty 8-bit codec, but I'm thankful since it helped me to improve my skills!

I love that you were rocking that thing forever with cheap ass lenses and getting such dope visuals. But yeah, A7sii has come to the end of its life compared to what's out. Hopefully the a7siii comes out this year.

Great video dude, I just picked up a Sony A7Sii even tho its 2020 lol, going through the learning processes you mentioned in this video. I think I'm gonna hold onto it and learn to master it as best as possible and wait it out until Sony announced the A7Siii at which point I'll be upgrading.

LONG LIVE THE LOWLIGHT KING!! - Still holds better fine detail at higher ISO's than a7iii's which smear the detail due to Artificial Noise Reduction. Sony needs to bring out the big guns soon if Canon's R5 actually delivers decent video ! ( Would honestly just love a rock solid 10bit codec, with quality 4K/60 )

a7III have a great AF and have a downscaled picture from 6K to 4K, but a7sII great at hight ISO.

great vid! I'm definitely a little bias but I think the Gh4 and Gh5 were the next steps forward for cameras. Finally gave us 4K 60p (and tons of other features) at an affordable price.

As u mentioned - nail the exposure in camera is crucial. It's tricky with Sony 8 bit - if I protect highlights, the shadows instantly falling apart just after i think about lifting them :D Do u have some advice for balancing exposure or work in post?

I sold my A7sii about 3 weeks ago. It’s been a great camera but I was using it less and less since buying the A7iii. I’ve also learnt a lot using that camera and working around it’s limitations.

A7iii for me, had it for just over a year now and love it. Hoping to get myself a second body but I'm unsure if I should get something cheaper or wait and upgrade the main and keep the A7iii as a second so I feel your pain man!

Nice vid mate. I still use it along with an Atomos recorder. I guess I just have an affection for it. I’ve got an FS7, Red scarlet W and an Arri plus. I still find myself picking up the A7sii. It’s been great for me

I´m on Sony a7 III with the GM 24-70mm f/2.8 for two years already, it's been a great and reliable camera for every works, but I´ll switch to another camera with a more solid 10bit codec and 4K at 60 FPS. I've been waiting for the a7S III since ever but nothing yet from Sony so I'll probably switch to the new 1DX MK3. Its a pain in the ass because of my Sony lenses and I really love Sony but it's been way too long without anything new for video. Greetings from Lisbon

James, your work is incredible!! It seems like you do a lot travel client work. I’d love to be able to do some travel work and I was wondering if you could provide some feedback as to how you got where you are? You seem pretty honest and straight forward. I’d really appreciate getting to connect if possible. Also I currently shoot on a Canon T4i with a 24-70mm. It’s all I got for now. My guess is that R5 will be the next big marker in camera history! 😱🤷🏻♀️

I have been really liking the A6600 more than I thought I would. I got it mainly for my wife to shoot stills, but I have to test it out for myself and set it up for her so I have been using it as a B Cam for my A7iii. Been awesome. I hope the A7Siii will be the next evolution for the cameras, but I have a speculation that it could be this new Canon R5. I hope Sony steps up their game again.

Excellent video James! When, if ever, will Sony come out with the A7s3? I’ve been using both the a7r3 and the a73 and they’re sooooo much better - battery life alone makes them a worthy upgrade. Btw, take a look at the eosR- I got one and have been very pleasantly surprised! Still waiting on your travel vid for southwest Florida!

I used to shoot on an A7Sii. Totally agree, grading SLOG working with those compressed files is a bloody nightmare, especially if you’re banging out edits in the field on a laptop. Been shooting with a P4K since it came out, absolutely love that camera. Mainly use a set of Meike primes + a speed booster for my Canon glass. Nice to have all those options. Picked up an S1 + Sigma EF adapter recently, mainly as a new timelapse A cam + for RAG travel footage. The quality is great, full VLOG, 4K 25/30p 10bit internal and 1080 125p 8bit or 60p 10bit with no crop. Fantastic hybrid camera with loads of useful features on-board - although larger / chunkier than your usual mirrorless cams. Love your work mate, glad you’re working with the P6K now.

Which Canon glass do you use with the P4K? Do you wish you would've gone P6K or do you still feel the P4K is the choice to make?

I’ve got loads of L glass, 16mm up to 400mm. The 6K wasn’t out when I got the 4K at launch. Still happy with it for my use though. Depends on your needs. If cost isn’t as issue the 6K is perfect if you just use EF glass and/or specifically want 6K footage, you’ll create larger files but you can punch in, useful if you output a lot of 4K content. You also get a slightly sharper 4K image from 6K downsampled to 4K. But the 4K with a 0.71 or 0.64 speed booster gives you more lens options and you actually get a wider image with boosted EF glass compared to the native 6K (its sensor is close to S35 so still crops full frame glass). IQ and DR from both is equally sick though. One other thing to consider, the 4K battery life ain’t great but shooting 6K absolute rinses through batteries. Plenty of options though, James set up a nice solution in a previous upload.

@@jb_ Dope, appreciate the reply mate! I'm looking at picking up a 4K right now with the 0.71 Metabones Cine but can't decide on a lens and I like the idea of having something with IS. Any quick recommendations? Would primarily be shooting music videos and weddings

No worries. Personally I wouldn’t get too hung up on an IS lens just use a gimbal. But if you really want a decent lens with IS for weddings / RAG I’d probably look a zoom, like the Canon 24-105mm. A great lens and will give you decent focal ranges of 32-142mm on a 0.71 booster. If you need something faster the Lumix G 12-35mm f/2.8 IS works well and is native MFT.

Love how you put out killer looking video and dont make excuses from the gear... But still a bit more money than my m50. Im not a professional though... Jist working on maximizing video best i can with what i can afford.

I’m on the a7iii. When I had the choice to upgrade to full frame I was absolutely positive I was not gonna get the a7sii for the reasons you listed! I think the new breakout camera is going to be the r5 from Canon.

In love with my A7iii, way prefer it to my FS5 cinema camera, it’s a little beast!
