RIP to renowned Pipeline surfer and lifeguard Tamayo Perry who died surfing on Oahu’s East Side 💔

Renowned Pipeline rider and lifeguard Tamayo Perry has been identified as the victim of a fatal shark attack on Oahu’s east shore today. The attack occurred at Goat Island, a well-known surf zone a few hundred yards offshore near Laie. Lifeguards were alerted to the incident some time before 1pm, and recovered Tamayo’s body in the process. Tamayo, 49, was born and raised on Oahu and made his surfing name with brilliant deep tube-riding performances at the Pipeline, winning the Pipe Masters Trials in 1999. He also became well-known for great surfing at Teahupoo in Tahiti, where he traveled with wife Emilia, a skilled bodyboarder. He suffered a near-fatal head injury at Pipe after being hit by a surfboard that was abandoned by its rider. Partly as a result, he committed his surfing life to teaching good surf etiquette and safe practices for all surfers, and built a new career as a lifeguard with Honolulu Ocean Safety. He also ran a surf school, Oahu Surfing Experience, with Emilia. Tamayo was a happy-go-lucky, big-hearted person who endeared himself to many friends both in Hawaii and worldwide. My brother just died in Oahu three days ago. He lived there 25 years. He knew Tamayo I am heartbroken but seeing the wave in all of it beauty lifts the heaviness a little thank you for sharing and may God walk both of you home.

This story is beautiful!! He got to live a full life without dying young or passing away old after his health and spirit weaken to the point it can’t be considered living but still can last decades. Doing what he loved… this is how I want to go! If it’s drowning or shark, I want to be in the warm crustal blue ocean with white sand under my feet on a beautiful day when I meet the Creator. Please don’t feel sad for anyone but those left behind! ❤ Trust me please there are only a few beautiful ways to go.

As I read the story about what happened and each comment, tears started to well up in my eyes…the simple sweet music also made the tears roll….i truly hate it when I hear of any one dying any kind of way….may all the natural and outsider families, and those of us who didn’t even know him, rely on God to pull us through this hurt and pain. Bummed to hear the news yesterday. Was working on and off film sets with the guy here and there for over half decade. Last I think was long hours in the jungle in Ka’a’awa on Jumanji. Solid guy. Still surreal. Such a tragedy.
