These guys know how to express emotion so profoundly... there's just this certain longing that you can feel oozing throughout this track that sucks you in. Then you realize you haven't even taken a breath during the entire chorus because you are so enraptured in it. Wow Genesis, you surely know to do it. Lol

This song evokes a sadness about aging, that you will never be what you were yesterday. One Genesis song that tears at your soul, when you're in a certain state of mind, is Undertow from the ATTWT album. The emotions from being your last day on earth is overwhelming.

"Ripples" is actually more about what young women go through as they age. The line "It's the last time you'll look like today" is really about how physical beauty fades and withers with time. Ripples are symbolic of a moment in time that will never come back. The cover artwork on the left side features a crone looking at a reflection of her younger, prettier self in a mirror. In fact the cover art has representations of all the songs and the stories they tell. Great reaction, btw! P.S. What you thought was a Mellotron was actually Steve Hackett's electric guitar using some sort of effect, perhaps delay or a volume pedal.

Its always sounded like a tape reversal of the guitar to me. Still does, especially if you play it backwards! Although I read the other day that its not that... hmm.

"Ripples" is a huge non-romantic-love ballad with beautiful lyrics about the passing of life. It sure is an emotional piece by itselft, but Phil makes sure that it gets beyond emotional with the sweet voice he pulled off in that late seventies era. The composition and musicianship is perfect, and Hackett electric guitar solo is in my opinion one of his best while he was in the band.

I grew up on alternative and Christian music and they live on ballads.. so I don't mind it. I like the slower songs. Reminds me of home.

This album that this song is from is a post-Gabriel masterpiece. This album involved the four Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford. Peter had now left. You need to listen to all of this album it is brilliant. As is the next album Wind and Wuthering. Steve sadly left after that album and Genesis went more pop and commercial. Ripples is a gorgeous song, with wonderfully complex chord structure, beautiful melody and meaningful lyrics about ageing and the loss of youth. Again live is just is so much more powerful, I saw them do this back in London in 1980, and again in Amsterdam in 2007 and it sounded just as good. Phil's voice is just so suited to this exceptional prog ballad.

Heart felt reaction - I love this album I was 18 yrs old when released it’s been my go to album when in a particular mood I find it uplifting esp. mad man moon and entangled, Dance on a Volcano and Los Endos it’s just madrigal!!!!

I always think of my mom when I hear this. She LOVED this album, and I can remember her listening on headphone, and singing along in that off-key way people have when they’re singing without any notion they’re audible. It’s a very good memory. I credit mom with so much of my musical taste, she loved music of all kinds.

Sorry to hear your having a tough few days. Ripples is one of my favourite Genesis tracks. As others have said it’s about ageing, or more specifically that beauty in youth is fleeting. A trick of the tail is my favourite Genesis album, Track after track the album delivers.

Great reaction! Just FYI in the middle section is Steve's guitar (on one channel) and Tony's ARP Pro soloist keyboard (on the other channel). It's not two keyboards but a duo guitar+synth. Also, if you think this is sad, try "Blood on the Rooftops" (which made cry some other reactors) and "One for the Vine"

I look forward to your reactions. I hope your situation gets better. All parents have similar thoughts in varying degrees to what you describe; that's not the diminish what you said but to provide comfort that you're not alone. While Seconds Out is awesome, I think the sound quality and mix of the studio version of Squonk gets the nod here. The lyrics are a weird one, referring to a mythological creature from Pennsylvania (you can Google it). But the music itself is really good and you might be reminded of a certain Zeppelin tune.

Phenomenal Genesis album... my personal favourites' are Dance on a volcano ( OMG !!- the dance section at high volume !! So intricate , so dynamic. One of Progs' greatest moments. And Mad man moon... beautiful, so 'English' sounding. Squonk also is epic. I would listen to this albums' version.... although of course Seconds Out is one hell of an album as a whole. 😍

'Ripples' is not really sad. Just thoughtful, like much of Genesis. They can go dark with their lyrics, but usually give a nugget of hope, if not real optimism by the end. That is both Mike and Steve on acoustic guitars, and sometimes even Tony picks one up. It is how they get such lush dense sound. Steve is doing the 'mellotron' sounds with some kind of distortion on his electric guitar. They really experimented a lot. Very Haunting. The music is like ripples moving to the edge of the pond. Genesis seems able to paint with sound.....like the Impressionists did. (think Debussy or even Monet) And yes, Phil's voice is so sensitive and intimate. Like a good friend consoling us.

Just a little thought... the instrument at the end playing the solo is Steve's guitar not a mellotron. It's a collection of effects pedals giving that swelling sound. I do hope that doing this for the channel, and ultimately for us, helped your mood.. even if just a tiny bit... Keep on Rocking.

This is one of Genesis' most beautiful tunes and that is partly because it is a reworking of maybe their most beautiful tune - The Carpet Crawlers (from The Lamb). You might like that even more.

My favourite is the raspberry 😀 If there were no downs, we wouldn't appreciate the ups. Chin up! Eventually, you may lose your self, (and realise you never really had one), and then it starts to make sense. This is their 1st perfect album, although not their most outstanding (Foxtrot, Selling England, The Lamb perhaps). This track is sublime. Steve's guitar in the 2nd half is haunting.

Nice reaction :) That middle section that you were asking about was Steve Hackett on the guitar using a volume pedal to make volume swells. It's were you have the volume off when you pick the string and then bring the volume up. He's a real master at it. Whenever I'm bummed I like to listen to some rockin stuff played really loud. The guitar lines and arpeggios in the verses could easily have been leftover from the Gabriel days. The chorus, however, is a sign that they were moving toward a more mainstream approach to pop music. But this is one of those beloved olde Genesis songs where it was a special occasion anytime they played it live.

I lost mine just this past New Year (another big date in the year that ruined)We have been listening to this album together since 1977. This got to me badly. Still keep up the brilliant reactions. I got lots of really good prog bands for you to catch up with. 1st, an album by a band called Anyone's Daughter, album is called Adonis. They're Dutch, I think. Really appreciate your heartfelt emotions....yeah, this is one of those classic LP's that brings a lot of nostalgic memories for me. Few bands were better than bringing out these emotions than Genesis, especially with the brilliance, harmony and melodic playing of Mr. Banks.

ripples is brilliant until the very last drop, the way Phils voice just changes right at the end is sublime ..believe me friend i lost my brother and dad by the time i was 20 ,i know how it feels so when you need to let some tears out just put this track on and let them go ,no shame ,does you good to let it go sometimes,good luck for the future and stay positive ✌....a couple of tracks you could review are never going back again by Fleetwood mac, short but sweet especially Lindsay buckinghams guitar 👌and led zeppelins California ,Robert plants voice ,another doozy

So sorry you're having such a crap time. Our old housemate went through something similar, losing most of his old friends and family due to drugs and alcohol, though in his case he never got to see his kids at all (until they were grown up). He's doing amazingly well now, he has that same determination you have - hang on in there! Oh, and your description doesn't say, how much do you want for a reaction? I find the instrumentals in this song have been very soft and solace to my mind. A good listen to just a shitty gay I had and brought my mind to a better place with happier thoughts reflecting on happier memories of my life. I feel your pain across the pond. I just about struggle through most days. Money is a major worry at the moment with 3 kids and blah blah blah. Especially when work is a major issue too 😢 These are other similarly moving Genesis gems. As I write this, I can’t see if you’ve done them already. Some are Gabriel; some are early Phil. Warning: they are all emotional. For Absent Friends (PG lineup) Harlequin (PG lineup) Dusk (PG lineup before Phil or Steve) Blood on the Rooftops (PC and Hackett 4-piece) Entangled (same) I usually find music that affects me is cathartic, but not always. Balance the light and dark my friend. Try 80s pop rock Yes: It Can Happen, Changes, I’m Running, or Cinema/Leave It (as a pair). Instant lift and a then-new sound for Yes ❤ Some don’t like it, many love it ❤

I got into Genesis when I was in college ('68-'72), found Peter Gabriel to be acceptable as a lead singer, but never considered him to be a G.O.A.T. sort of vocalist. His voice perfectly fit the band's music though, and I was a bit concerned when he announced he was leaving Genesis. On some level I think I was fully aware that Colliins was doubling the vocals in many of The Olde Songs, and although the band apparently auditioned dozens of potential singers, I am delighted that Collins finally stood up and announced he was sick of spending so much time listening to these wannabees, that he already knew all the songs and the lyrics, and why not just let him take over the lead singer's duties? And thusly musical history was made, with Collins eventually obtaining near-immortal status as a vocalist with Genesis and his own solo career. "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering" are my favorite Genesis albums, a perfect mix of Collins' wonderful voice and the prog style of the old Genesis. While I did not like the band's drifting into the world of radio-friendly pop music, and will always wonder what sort of masterpieces would have been produced by the Trick/Wuthering band if they had remained together and true to prog, I won't begrudge them their payday. I also acknowledge that they never would have played in front of a crowd of 500,000 people in Rome if they had remained an excellent prog band producing epic long songs. Apparently a whole lot of people loved the pop version of Genesis.

Genesis got really popular with those pop songs. But I've never seen so many talented artists in one band that went on to have successful solo careers at all. I really like this album. I reallllllly like SEBTP. I haven't really dove into any other cd other then lamb (which I have to finish) All this to say. I enjoy both eras of vocalists but man.... there is something special about Phil's voice lol

I like your take on it, but it's really about getting old. Ripples never come back means you can't turn back time. Life is finite and beauty even more fleeting. I think a first listen should always be the original studio recording. Then hear live, etc.

...and for "Squonk", better listen to the studio version. And for Seconds Out, "Supper's Ready" live is a far, far better version than the studio one, more fluid, better musicianship and two drums! 🤗

The biggest issue with this album is that Phil Collins didn't have any charisma yet.

@@kbrewski1 Ehh, the first two songs are great. Otherwise, I feel the album really lacks Gabriel's charisma. And the album has a lot Banks' most offensively twee material. Of course, it's a matter of taste.

There is no issue with this album, i'm lucky I love both versions of Genesis and to produce this after the cataclysmic exit of Peter (his choice) was more genius and thankfully more to come with wind and wuthering, and then there were three, Duke, Abacab and Genesis, I slightly prefer the early stuff but they continued to produce great music and I am thankful.
