Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup Barcelona

Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup Barcelona

18 күн бұрын

From the recent days of relatively calm sailing, today Barcelona reminded all involved in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup that it’s a venue to be treated with caution and respect as a residual southerly swell mixed with a sharp north-easterly wind chop that filtered in and whipped up a mean average of 1 metre waves to make it interesting. Still in the grips of the slow-moving Atlantic high-pressure system however, winds were in the 7-13 knot range but at the upper end it showed just how potent the new AC75 designs really are.

Regardless of whether INIOS is quick or not, its nice to some variations in boat designs. Itll make the racing very interesting i just hope they are all fairly close for some good racing.

it looks to me the slim hull depth in conjunction with the relatively wide width allows American Magic to use the air flowing under the hull as a cushion ... Will it prove to be a deciding factor is of course what remains to be seen. Which is why this years race is so anticipated.

AM looks a lot more stable than INEOS at this point but a lot can change as the races get closer. AM won the warmup race last time around but then didn’t make the same improvements the other teams made.

For born to race helmsmen the temptation to line up with another boat on the water must be massive! Good reports coming out of Barcelona of INEOS being quick on the water is interesting.

The English boat is build to stop the wind crossing underneath like a sail down low witch makes senses with the rudder lay out but that’s in a perfect world. As we know that’s never in sailing. The am boat is a better over alll boat the England boat might have a better top and hight in perfect condition but with current and veritable winds, that boat is gonna be hard to control as soon as the bottom section hits the water it’s going to be a dog clear sign of one boat being designed by an F1 team on a track and one design being made by sailors, I hope it’s a good race, but I would take a.m. if I was a betting man

You could be entirely right but I think there's more to the INEOS design than meets the eye and anyone outside the team has figured out yet. It doesn't make logical sense that the Challenger of Record would design and build a radical contender only to fail miserably at challenging the holder of the cup. Why issue a challenge to ETNZ and then come out with a dud? There must be something we're missing here.

@@jamesaron1967 well you set a premonition with that idea but I wold honestly say there is more to the am boast that you don’t see the English boat is bold enough I’m going off just hull design. The challenge and Italian are similar, and I would reckon that American magic is somewhere in between, and I think that the English boat is along the lines of the most radical, but at the same time being designed by an F1 designer, like dealing about, which is based off of the challenger, so I will defend Eleni more than English Popa. Both of them are working at the problem at hand as if it’s on a track ie best case scenario, not an all-around contender, but the end of the day will be whoever gets off the starting line, right whoever reads the pressure whoever can sell the best VMG doesn’t matter what you have I think all the boats are going to prove the right button that note there are ways to pressure each putting it on way with that noted

Have to factor in Slingsby and Goodison, the most dominant foiling sailors of the last decade. Give them a half decent boat and they will be schooling the opposition. The defender also has a few guys who can sail on board......No one is unbeatable, but anyone who can beat these teams has to be a genius - at least on the day. The learning curve is very much up to the sailing team's ability to push boundaries without blowing things up.

Ineos looks fly/sail heigher than others .. do they use more ground efffect/ ekranoplane style for sailing? Their hull (or I just folled by that livery) IMO direct flow from above to water surface to get more air pressure on the bottom hull
@jamesaron1967
@jamesaron1967 16 күн бұрын
No sailing vessel employs _ekranoplan_ ground effects. GEVs operate by generating a cushion of air underneath their wings and fuselage as a method of 'gliding' to reduce the drag of equivalent longer wings compared to standard planes. These yachts are not GEVs. Their proximity to the water surface when sailing in that mode serves solely to induce an _end-plate effect_ to prevent overflow and maintain pressure variance (windward vs leeward) for improved efficiency of the sailing rig. A hypothetical GEV sailing vessel would have no contact with the water and sail on a cushion of air, however, it would need to be capable of far greater speeds to induce sufficient ground effect.
@sukocoimam4519

@@jamesaron1967 but even plane and bird sustain some ground effect when landing or closed to water (pelican and seagull). And if I see others AC hull their looks like ( from youtube video) lifting body shape, contra with Ineos.. just my tought. But again there aren't perfect design for all condition, design are thread off from condition to others. The Winner would be the most suitable design during "the race". The team most right guess for sea state, breeze, opponents placing, etc and offcourse most skill crew, when their race is the winner.
@jamesaron1967
@jamesaron1967 15 күн бұрын
@@sukocoimam4519 Yes, due to their wings. If sailing ever advances far enough to be capable of true ground-effect aerodynamics, I imagine the hulls would need to be broader and have some sort of wings. They would no longer be sea vessels at that point.

If the hull body would be lifting it would reduce the righting moment. The more righting moment the more power you can extract from the sails. In a purely theoretical sense it's counter productive for this class of boats to have aerodynamically lifting hulls.

American Magic looks so fast. If all things are equal, weight, sails/trim, boat handling, then her limited windage profile should be a difference maker. The biggest factor is going to be sail trim. The Kiwis and their double trim set up for both "mainsails" may be the biggest difference maker thus far when looking at marginal increases in performance.

@@jamesaron1967 Was informed by some outside the Team Emirates dock that potentially this will be a significant advantage, but it remains to be seen I guess. All the boats will have their pluses and minuses. As in all other Americas Cup campaigns, one or two boats will shine thru. I’m not in the camp that says they’ll all be very similar in performance.
