The open world of this game is the main reason I don’t play Assassin Creed. I guess someone must enjoy doing laundry list but the review score says the majority of players hate it.

Sometimes it feels like reviews (bad/good) have an unfortunate domino effect where people start to dislike a game because someone else has disliked it. I have 20 hours in and absolutely love the game. Also the combat feels very rewarding and dexterous after I’ve got a hang of it. I appreciate your opinion tho.

One thing I disagree with is that Team Ninja wasn't known for pushing graphics. Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive always pushed visuals and gameplay. It was with Nioh people started saying that and it of make me sad that expectations and standards are lowered for TN.

I’m about 40 hours into this and absolutely loving it! Not as good as Nioh but MUCH better than Wo Long. It does Assassin’s Creed better than Assassin’s Creed ever did and the combat REALLY grew on me. If you are in the mood for a checklist game this is the best I’ve played in a while.

I dont care, this game looks tight as a samurai/ronin sim and im here for it.

Good to see your opinion cowboy it’s unfortunate that you didn’t enjoy it as much. From everything I seen it looks ill enjoy this game. My only disappointment is the open world exploration but that’s probably because we’ve gotten so many games that do it more organically.

I couldnt help but disagree with your comments on the combat being bad or meh...the combat has insane depth and i feel like you kept it very surface and basic level...when you learn more advanced stuff like cancels, timing etc the combat becomes almost limitless

TN should really have focused on making Nioh 3.

Appreciate you gave it a long chance after 25 hours... you are a lot further in the storyline than i am after 22 hours. Im happy with the game and think it is fun. Reminds me of something like days gone where it also got panned for graphics performance as a ps 1st party release. That game was well worth it for me and this reminds me of that. I have loved team ninja games since doa2 and ninja gaiden xbox...

Idk how big TN is but maybe they've overextended themselves? This is their 4th game in 5 years.

Your gripes with the combat seem weird to me. I feel that the reason the enemies eventually get super armor is, so you don't get a free kill out of a single parry. You are supposed to use your skills during that time to maximize efficiency. Then you take a step back and give room for another interaction.

I usually agree with all your reviews but definitely not here. I nearly skipped the game after watching this but I bought it and oh man, I love it so far. Maybe because my expectations were lowered but I don't understand the negativity towards this game. I am a Souls veteran and I love a challenge, this is difficult still and a good challenge for me. You say it's basically just pressing square but I just die all the time just doing that, it's much more about parrying like Sekiro with combo's, stance changes and dodging like Souls. The combat is fast, fun and very challenging. When you string a great combo together along with parry's it feels amazing to play. I kept hearing that the graphics are PS3 quality and this is crazy to me as I think it looks great with nice weather effects etc, sure it's not up there with the top top PS5 games graphically but maybe late PS4 but saying PS3 is ridiculous and I think people are forgetting what PS3 games looked like :) Maybe the patches have upgraded them. The horse animation isn't great though this is true but now I am playing it, it doesn't feel as bad as people are making out an it's only to get from A to B and not a massive issue for me. The world is great to explore and which open world games don't have repetitive tasks let's face it?? and as long as you enjoy the gameplay then it's fine and I really enjoy it. I feel like a complete bad ass when playing it and pulling off a big combo with some perfectly timed parry's and then spinning and chopping their heads off :) You also don't mention the co op aspect of the game and this is super fun with a friend. I actually prefer the combat to Nioh personally

Gotta give Team Ninja credit for experimenting and trying out new things with their combat systems. They don't always work, but I like that each game they put out is slightly different from one another. I like the way the combat felt in Wo-Long. Making the parry a separate button from the block actually created an interesting choice the player was forced to make where an unsuccessful parry came with more risks.

Having a *Nioh, but open world* would’ve been incredibly unique and differentiated Rise of the Ronins open world significantly from the general Ubi open world style. So it doesn’t make much sense why they took every single note from Ubisofts book? I expected them to do what Fromsoft did with Elden Ring, where they essentially did *Dark Souls, but open world* which provided players with a unique gameplay experience amongst the AAA market. Never expected this much hand-holding from a company like Team Ninja. When I saw the map markers, I said “oh, yeah.. I know what this is” lmao I’ll have to play it for myself to see whether or not this will be the first Ubi-inspired open world I will like since Far Cry 3. I hope this game is incredibly successful so they put those resources into something like Nioh maybe. From the outside perspective, it seems like TN aren’t bold or ambitious enough to attempt a game like this

This game, in my opinion, is much better than dragons dogma 2. The enemy vsriety in this is much more significant, maybe not by looks but definitely in style and movesets. The "ubisoft" of this game is so light. The collectibles are easily gsthered and the game respects your time. The story is pretty good and the setting is unique. After playing dd2, i can safely say that the first half on the game is better than ronin, but the second half falls off hard, where as ronin has been pretty fun abd consistent the whole way through.

Not gonna lie, you didnt even talk about the 5th tree which is the breakthrough and how you get the extra styles in them at all either. Im very confused on what you did in this game tbh when you dont even have 4 accessories unless this is just way early footage of your playthrough.

After Nioh 2, I thought to myself "man, i bet their next game is going to be legendary" Then Wo long released and was a step back and underwhelming. But again, i was SURE their NEXT game would for sure be absolutely amazing. Me now: "$@%# it. I give up."

First thing i noticed was the combat tutorial and the fact that you dont see all the weapons you have equipped on your character like in TN other games. The weapons being visible isnt a major thing but it had a charm to their games especially when your character would flick the blood off when sheathing weapons. Here your character doesnt do that. To me this doesnt have the TN feel it feels like some interns who just graduated came in and made this

In terms of graphics, I think this color palate is supposed to portray the tone of the time period. A kind of to something like GTA IV. But damn that horse got a fuckin log up his ass.

The combat is still very similar to other team ninja games, I don't really get the hate.

They started working on this game in secret right around the same time Nioh 1 was released in 2017. So its been in development for 7-8 years. And whats worse, its a PS5 exclusive, so no PC. Man, Team Ninja........... Btw, all your complaints about the open-world is literally every single open-world game ever. Thats why all open-world games are trash, collectathon, fetch quest, checklist garbage gameplay. Its literally just there as padding/fillers to extend the playtime making the player feel like its a big game, but if you just ignore all of it the mainstory is like 20 hours max. Its just an excuse to charge you 70 dollars.

Combat was my issue with Wo Long...I was really looking forward to this game, I loved both Niohs... maybe if I get too bored one day I'll check it out, but not today, it's a shame...keep up the good work Cowboy 👍🏿

I was fine with this being discount Tsushima, but it's the Ubisoft-ness that's disappointing me the most. They should know better than to emulate that dry AF formulaic checklist system--didn't they see how bad ppl clowned Valhalla when Tsushima was a better AC than AC? Why would they think this is a good idea?

39h playtime and i barely touched the story. It's a really good game if you actually like samurais. Me personaly, the stances, the outfits (wonderful kasa), even the chiburi gives me joy. Also if we are going to compare to GoT, i think there is more depth, more tools, more weapons, more variety to the gameplay. The world of GoT is pretty but gets boring due to lack of activities. RoR is a solid classic japanese rpg game.

Its going to do well despite everything, I'm getting both but will be focused on DD2.

I’m conflicted. I think many people are wanting this to be Nioh 3 when it never tried to be. At the same time, you expect engaging combat from a Team Ninja game and it seems like this isn’t hitting for fans of TM. I’m really wondering who this game was made for.

the problem with the rock paper scissor stance system, it that it seems more like busywork than a complex combat system.

This is your worse review, really dropped the ball. not only the combat is a mix of Sekiro (parry focused) + Nioh (stance + doge/block) It has depth with grapples etc and if you change your styles with flash attack its even more. Press square will get you killed beyond level 5. * Story is awesome with a superb historic background, choices that matter, and the timeline feature. Oh god how I'd love to have this in FromSoft when you kill that stupid NPC by mistake. * Character creator and customization is simply another level, not aa good as Nioh 2 but it blows modern games outta the water * Open World, traversal is great and they added the Elden Ring crafting for consumables. Even though you have a list, activities open in an organic way. This is not even close to AC lol, trash review point. * Cut scenes, they added the context information like FFXVI, so you can review the history and events related to it. This game is a solid 8.5-9 out of 10, . I don't know how your review is so inaccurate. Granted graphics needs some work on textures and pop-in but I found it overall ok.

Sekiro really influenced team ninja in a bad way. Would really be a shame if they try to implement the Sekiro style parry system again in Nioh 3.

It has been so disheartening for me seeing how this game is being received. I wanted to look up how people thought because I have just been blown away by everything so far, especially with how the game looks. I cannot believe how opposite the reception has been

The setting choice is 10/10 and the game does look enjoyable but idk something is very clearly missing. I actually played the game now I take back what I said not missing anything game is solid.

Thanks for the review Cowboy, love your channel. I bought this day one and have been loving it. I do really enjoy AC and Nioh, and the combination of the two feels right to me. So far, this is a winner for me.

I would put it below Nioh2, above Wo Long. It keeps presenting you with more mechanics and stuff to do as you progress. And the combat is much closer to Nioh than Wo Long. Ki Pulse (sort of), weapon switching mid combo for longer chains and sort of a stance system. Lots and lots of different weapon attacks and some build variety. Still not a huge fan of parry based combat and rock paper scissor style weapon counters but it works well enough and the fights can be pretty cinematic. It still feels like they are searching for an identity after Nioh and keep mixing different influences. It works but it doesn't feel as cohesive as Nioh did.

I know they're two very different games. But after playing them and knowing what you know now. What game would you recommend I play first dragon's dogma 2 or rise of the Ronin? Its really refreshing to actually hear a review where the reviewer actually gives constructive critisism for the majority of the video. So many times reviews are pretty much the same where its 95% positive and maybe a few mentions on some negative aspects and that gets bland. Its basically who can suck off the best. I was struggling between this and DD2 and bc of your honesty im going DD2. Bc of your honesty, you are in my opinion the #1 reviewer.

This game is way better than Ghost of Tsushima! I will never understand how that game got such a huge pass for all the boring and meaningless side activities and generic story. RotRs world feels so much more alive, gameplay is way better and the side contet too. This game is NOT more assassin's creed than Nioh and certainly not more AC than Ghost!

I had hopes for this. But I thing Dragons Dogman 2 is going to sweep and this game will end up on sale sooner than later.

Cheers for the review… you confirmed what I saw from some gameplay vids. From the trailer I hoped for either a modern open world “way of the samurai” or a Tsushima comparable. Instead it looks like an watered down open world sakiro. I’ll try it, but not until much later.

This looks like a game that was trying to blend Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro, plus past titles by team Ninja, but fell short when compared to them because those titles all do everything this game does but way better.

Ok, so I bought DD2 and played the mess out of it. Now I'm debating on whether or not to pick up RotR. Is this a wait for a sale type of game? It looks interesting I'm just unsure about going ahead and jumping in.

Nah man this complain to this check list issue is a bit iffy in my opinion, talking about ffvii rebirth here, the whole map is kinda a check list, even i used go do all the towers first to highlight everything and then do everything thats available making sure the check list is ticked off. Also i should add to rebirth exploration aspect, ive come across many interesting locations where is nothing to do unless u unlock a quest and progress, especially with intel stuff that u do in that game, ot kind of sounds like this game tbh, i dont see any difference, one can argue the side stuff could just be dead ass boring compared to rebirth. Although saying that rebirth is still my goty if it seems like am hating on that game, probs the best ff game to date. But this game still seems interesting to me and tbh checklist open world are not really a thing that would make or break my game

A game for everyone is a game for no one - Helldiver devs Team Ninja should've stuck to their strength and focused on combat. Anything that's more simplified than Nioh 2 will feel watered down at this point.
