Rishi Sunak has announced the next general election will be held on July 4.
The Prime Minister made the announcement after briefing the Cabinet on his plans in 10 Downing Street this afternoon.
Mr Sunak’s decision to hold a snap contest this summer represents a major political gamble, with the Tories currently lagging behind the Labour Party in the opinion polls by around 20 points.

He takes credit for the furlough system that he used during the pandemic, but doesn't take responsibility for the billions wasted on useless PPE, and the lining of his friends' pockets.

Lets vote Conservative and get screwed, lets vote Labour and get screwed, lets vote another party, they wont win and we get screwed, I love democracy. Does he still live in the UK he doesn't seem to know what's really going on, I guess he's busy counting his £120 million bonus that he worked so hard for.

There is now no left and no right. All that remains is grey sludge that thinks the same, looks the same and will carry on doing the same thing. Look what happened to Truss and Corbyn who strayed to far from the political ideal of the blob. Zero seats!

He needs to go. If it was up to him, every disabled person would be homeless and get no money. Their plan from the beginning was to make the rich richer and the poor only poorer and that he has succeeded.

Utterly rubbish comment and such a lowbrow idea of what UK politics is really like. The only right-wing leader the tories have had in the last fourteen years was ejected by the blob in under two months. Any leader that strays too far left or right is doomed. All that remains is the grey goo in the centre that makes nobody happy.

@RoseBenedictCreative

Because they've had a slight improvement in the economy recently, but it's expected to take a down turn by Autumn. They called it now, because they know the country will be in an even worse state by Autumn.

There is no realistic scenario for the Conservatives to overtake Labour before the election would happen automatically. Over time, their prospects have only gotten worse, and they honestly should have called an election last year if they wanted to limit the damage.

Poor Rishi. What a catastrophic way to open the campaign. I’m on the left and am sympathetic to the Labour Party… although I’m not British and have no real stake in this election. But even I have to say I feel just a tinge of sympathy for the prime minister after this shambolic speech. Visually, this speech seems an appropriate representation of the state of the Tories’ electoral prospects and the overall tone of their campaign.

The police should have stopped that loud music being played while he was speaking. I have just as much right to hear what the PM has got to say as they have to protest. Loud music is not a valid form of protest if it drowns out someone trying to speak. I was not impressed.
