Rishi Sunak holds a press conference on Rwanda bill.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the first flight carrying asylum seekers to Rwanda will leave Britain in 10-12 weeks.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday morning (April 22), the PM said “enough is enough” as he said MPs and peers would sit through the night if necessary to get the Safety of Rwanda Bill through Parliament.
Mr Sunak had originally promised that flights would go to Rwanda in spring, but his new timetable suggested the first plane would not leave until July.
At a Downing Street press conference he blamed Labour opposition to the scheme for the delays, but vowed: “We will start the flights and we will stop the boats.”

Almost all are thought to have left the country almost immediately, with many attempting to return to Europe via people-smuggling routes. Rwandan homes that were previously earmarked to house migrants deported from the UK have already been sold to local buyers. the developer has said. Some 70% of the 163 affordable homes on the Bwiza Riverside estate have been sold, the developer ADHI-Rwanda said. On top of the £220 million Britain has already paid Rwanda, the UK government has agreed to pay an extra £150 million over the next three years, and £120 million pounds once the first 300 asylum seekers have been resettled, the National Audit Office (NAO) said on Friday 1st March 2024. Still not one person has been sent to Rwanda.

The Rwanda deal enables a tit for tat exchange of Rwandans the Rwandan government do not want to be sent to the UK within the terms of the deal. So we send 300 able bodied, fighting age males to Rwanda and Rwanda send us 300 old, infirmed, mentally and or physically challenged bodies in return. Nearly as good a deal as we got with Brexit from the look of it. If more than 300 people are sent to Rwanda, the UK would pay a one-off sum of £120m to help boost the country's economy, with further payments of £20,000 per individual relocated. On top of that, up to £150,000 will be paid for each person sent there
