The release of the Survivors of the Void DLC for Risk of Rain 2 added a bunch of new information about the mysterious plane that helps answer some of our questions. Let's go through this new information and see what the monsters that have been hiding in the depths of the Abyss were trying to do with Petrichor V!

It’s weird to me that the voidling was afraid of the brothers but not afraid of the folks who killed them.

We don't know where the brothers came from. Might be something about them that intently opposes the void, while we just use brute strength or strategy

@@ThCrkhd After reaching 2 trillion damage with Acrid, I no longer know why the void decided to attack him after killing Mithrix. I do however now understand why they stuck him in the void

probably wanted to play it safe, knowing how powerful Mithrix, Providence, and the humans were the voidling wanted to see how things played out, there was a possibility that Mithrix didn't attack the humans and instead teamed up with them, the voidling wanted to make sure that didnt happen

Its kind of scary seeing as the Voidling is a voidLING, implying that there is a stronger creature out there. If Mythrix and Providence didn't create the void, then maybe the void created them?

There is also something lurking deeper within the depths of the Void... >:) I personally do think it's possible that Mithrix and Providence are tied to the Void in some way since I think they were brought or transported to Petrichor V, not born there, but they could easily have just come from another plane of existence - one that hasn't been referenced directly yet. Guess we'll just have to wait and see! Thanks for watching!

Personally of my opinion, all of the void creatures we've seen share traits of ocean life. With a lot of them being close to things like crabs and shrimp which typically are smaller creatures in the ocean. However when in the void there are still those mysterious gigantic void whales, and who knows what their disposition is...not to mention the possibility since are dealing with deep horrors...a certain diety of the ocean could be referenced as their leader.

@@SquatchGamingChannel was doing a run as heretic and wanted to see if stacking strides could give me enough time to fly over to the previous sections of the fight that you can see way off in the distance. You can't, but I did see a distant yellow star with a blue ring. Which was unmistakably kirby's planet. But yeah, great video. I'm huge in the lore on this game and this was really well put together, especially since nobody has done videos on the void yet that I've seen.

@@SquatchGamingChannel There's another similar easter egg in the Simulacrum; one of the contained environments off in the distance is the Dreamland 64 stage from Smash Bros. Probably was added because one of the newer devs plays competitive Melee.

The Void Family Event simply says "The Void has become curious" as it's warning message, which may imply that the Voidling is simply collecting things out of curiosity.

Agreed. Evil, torture and pain are human concepts. I don't belive the void or its entitys to be evil, they are simply curious. The void can also be seen as an endless abyss and as a famous quote says "If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you". The voidling literally has a huge eye, so i think its a reference to that

@@The_Glitterbornein that case pain and torture are certainly animal concepts as well, I don't know anyone who would say that animals don't have some understanding of pain, and there are some animals that practice at least something similar to torture (e.g. cats playing with their prey, or just orca's in general)

First time I beat Mithrix - I didn't think about what followed. It all just seemed to make sense as a bombastic climax for the game. For what I had originally considered to be a mindless fun game with little story, this conclusion was perfect in its simplicity. Explosions everywhere as you charge up the ship, you then escape the surface just in time before the moon implodes. The end. Although I played the first game and was aware of the 'true' story behind Providence and our actions, I still didn't think RoR2 was much more beyond that. But the more I played the game, the more questions I began to ask. Like, why do the void reavers only show up when Mithrix dies? And now that I look at it... the moon implosion seems identical to the void reaver implosion. Then I begin noticing things I didn't before. Such as when I die to a void reaver implosion, the game tells me I didn't actually 'die', but instead "You have been detained. Await your sentence at the end of Time." Wait, I'm not dead? Where the hell did I go? Where the hell do these void reavers come from? Then I discover the void fields and more questions come up. Then I begin reading entry logs... And I realize there is so much more thought, cohesion, and mystery to this simple game about killing stuff than I thought. I also very much like the idea of looking at the 'brighter' side of the Void Locus as akin to being underwater and looking towards the surface. Given the aquatic motif for the void creatures it makes perfect sense. Hopoogames did an incredible job of taking a simple concept and making it something special. With not just a damn good gameplay loop, but also incredible music and environment design and lore entries. There's so many times where I'm playing Risk of Rain 2 where I stop, look at the environment, listen to the music, and think "What the hell is actually happening here?" I applaud the devs and Chris Christodoulou for finding a way to make me feel an emotion or curiosity towards their game without the use of dialogue or cutscenes. I find myself wondering and excited for the future of this game not just because I love playing it, but I'm genuinely curious where they'll take the story next. Also; was anyone else surprised at how *BIG* the Voidling was? I read the name 'voidling' and assumed it was a small creature. "-ling" as a suffix has 2 definitions; 1. Young. small, or inferior one" (such as duck*ling*) 2. One connecting with or having the quality of. (such as hire*ling*) I guess it makes sense for it to be a Voidling given that it very much is connected to the void and may possibly have been created by the void itself.... But I do wonder if there is another, 'superior', much much bigger Void creature in the depths. Sorry for rambling, I just really like RoR haha. And thanks for your work and I really enjoyed getting to see you cover this series!

In the gamefiles it is called something along the lines of "MINIvoidcrab" so I'd say that yeah, Voidling isn't the apex of what the Void has to offer judging by that name

Should be a ton of fun! :) Hopoo did the same thing with their game Deadbolt: small unassuming game that turns out to be pretty deep lore-wise if you take the time to read it all! that's what makes good games, sorties, even musics etc.. so great : The fact that's it's not just simple minded (most of the time xD), and that there is much more behind it. I think that when making a game, having good and deep lore can get you farther than you think. The same applies to stories, where having meanings and messages contained by your characters. Or musics, with design choices based on it's origins and the message it gives.

The deep ocean is literally the real life equivalent of the Void. You can barely see around you because all around is unclear water, like the thick fog, and the creatures down there get fiercer and fiercer the deeper you go.

Something interesting to note is that the achievement for unlocking purity is called The Calm. The achievement is unlocked by beating Mithrix on Monsoon. Considering that the calm comes before the storm, the storm can be seen as the void invading after Mithrix dies which fits the lore pretty well. Thought that was a pretty cool way of hinting towards the answer as well. Another thing, the lore of the item talks about two brothers chasing glass frogs in the sun, the glass frog is the other way to enter the void which is another hint from the devs.

I think the reason that the developers removed the final cutscene, is that they are implicating the survivors themselves are stuck in the simulations that the Voidling makes them live through over and over, and it's why you can do many runs again and again, and kill the voidling over and over, and still do it again by just starting a new run.

It actually has been confirmed by the devs themselves that the game doesn't take place in the simulacrum and its not a simulation, so they probs removed the cutscene to possibly expand on the void

Someone pointed out that the events that have happened so far seem to correspond to the 4 Elements that make up things in the Universe: Soul - Providence and his Death Design - Mithrix and his Death Mass - The Detainment of objects and creatures by the Void And which enemy is associated with Blood and the color Red in the game...? ;) Thanks for watching! :)

my theory is the Sand Crabs from the first game were either killed off like the Children, or were captured by the void and corrupted into Devastators. Oh also! Another theory is that Void Barnacles are Squid Polyps that went under a full transformation like the Void Fiend, instead of just being corrupted. Between the Polyp's fitting into the void's aquatic theming, their attack is also fairly similar

On the topic of what the next dlc may be, in dev thoughts 18, they said: "The goal for Expansions is that they would be multiple Content Updates in size, and would occur only 1-2 times a year. These Expansions will most likely be themed - for example, we could have a “Void Expansion” or an “Imp Expansion” - with new content built around that theme." So it sounds like the theory that the next dlc will give us more info on the red plane and imps in general is correct, seeing as they did go with the void theme that they suggested back then

That would be awesome! There are some other people that have pointed out that all the major players/antagonists of Risk of Rain thus far are associated with the Four Compounds that make up the Universe: Soul - Providence Design - Mithrix Mass - Voidling (since it was stealing mass from the Universe) That leaves Blood, and which creatures are associated with the Color Red and have a bleeding effect with their attacks? ;) Thanks for watching!

Should it not have already been mentioned, the whale looking creatures that fly's around is a extremely strong reference to dishonored, and its void.

I have a theory relating to the four pillar types on comencement, they all align with a major antagonist. as already stated, providence is accociated with soul, and mithrix design, that leaves mass an blood unassociated, but with theaddition of the void, we can cross off mass, as void detainmant is collecting mass, and remebering its accociated design, and last we have blood, accocited with the only other significant enemy, imp, with their bleed stacking.

But they went with void instead, So next expansions that will launch somewhere around december or next year will surely be imps

The Void and the Voidling within it remind me a lot of the Combine from Half-Life 2. Traveling between dimensions, capturing whole worlds. The apparent futility of resistance. This is cosmic horror done right; the content itself isn't frightening, but comprehending it is horrifying.

Is that why the log writer in RoR1 said that they felt like they made a grave mistake after killing Providence, since now our universe lost the one thing the Void was afraid of (not that they’d know the specifics, but a vague premonition of the end) And man, that detail about the endless simulations is great because now you can’t be certain about anything, and could be an in-universe explanation of the after-death reset. Are the events unfolding in real-time, or is the void using the survivors to study how to combat the brothers if another like them shows up

The "endless cycle" line can be read on face-value as sort of a 4th wall break for the game, but it's also reinforced by the log for Transcendence. It mentions feelings of deja vu, of repeating the same events over and over, and most importantly it mentions "the observers" - the Void creatures.

Providence wasn't only holding the void at bay, he was also (partially) fending off the inhabitants of the Red Plane, too! (this can be seen with the ror1 imp death animations being true deaths, whereas the ror2 imp death animations are simply being "recalled" into the Red Plane). But also killing anyone who calls themself a protector has probably gotta feel pretty bad XD

Whenever you defeat the voidling and the portal spawns. Instead of the portal saying "leave" it should say "enter deeper void portal". It's an incredibly tiny change that would make the void ending feel so much more ominous and cool.

Don't mess with space cops, especially crab space cops! Honestly when they first announced an alternative boss for the DLC I was really hoping we'd get a twisted/void corrupt Provenance. Although the Voidling is an interesting enemy, beating a corrupted version of Provenance to unlock a corrupted verson of the sole survivor seemed super thematic and appropriate. That said, a normal run does end with Commencement being detained, so maybe we'll at least see a voidborn Mithrix in the future...

Void Fiend's escape message is interesting because it implies that he's going to go on a tear through the universe. "And so it comes, for us all" Makes me think Void Fiend is probably not a real member of the Safe Travels and is in fact a villain himself regardless of his opposition to the Voidling...

"Deeper into curiosity. Deeper into hubris. Deeper into the depths of creation." At the end of RoR2 upon defeating Mithrix, we see the void monsters detaining the entire moon of Petrichor V - with a dying Mithrix still on it. If Mithrix somehow survives, perhaps due to the detention of the void, wouldn't he be the perfect vessel, consumed by curiosity, hubris, and the desire to create, to be its ruler?

even before the dlc, i always speculated the void to be this sort of force to detain anything that is causing too much chaos, something to get rid of crazy variables in the world. not necessarily seeking power, just making sure power doesnt go in the wrong hands. im sure the void can go anywhere across the universe, but petrichor in particular is an absolute chaotic mess of a planet with so many creatures, obviously it would be a target to be detained.

Hey I’m sorry for taking ages to get to this video. I’ve been very busy. There’s some points I want to make here that may be important. Spoilers ahead for Survivors Of The Void: 1) The Void is something that started invading after Providence’s demise, not just after Mithrix’s death. In the current build with the DLC, we can see how the void tries to take on the planet: infestation, instigating, weakening the planet. They do this between Risk of Rain 1 and 2; you can see this through the void creatures who invade and the void seeds. 2) The Voidling ending is an alternate ending. This… gets a little confusing I’ll be honest; the DLC left us with more questions than answers. The Voidling ending can be both after Mithrix’s death but also before his death (you can summon the void portal on Commencement after beating Mithrix by petting the glass frog 10 times OR by looping until a portal spawns). 3) Void Fiend broke out between 1 and 2. It s also what broke out Acrid (refer to my post in the Acrid video for more details). It is unlikely it would work with the Operatives. 4) So here’s a really cool detail: the simulacrum is canon. According to the logs, it is hinted that the Simulacrum is canon. It’s a simulation… it’s a simulation… it’s… a… simulation. 5) in the Void Locus log I believe, it mentions how they found a CHEF bot in the void. This could be the same CHEF bot from Risk of Rain 1, gone insane and killing, but could not stop the void. 6) So in the planetarium (the final boss stage), you can see all the planets that they’ve taken. Yeah it’s funny that they’ve got references to Kirby and Smash… but there’s a funny detail. This is a cell. This is one of the millions of cells. There’s also earth. The void is at the end of time. This means that everything, at the end of time, will be void. Everything will be captured by the void. At the end of time, everything will be voided. There is no escape from them. 7) There is always a bigger fish… Voidling means there could be a bigger void creature. Deeper, Deeper, Yet Deeper. 8) Tharson is OK from this encounter.

The environment log, for the bazaar beyond time i think? Mentions that the Newts are a species that live outside of time. The one in the Bazaar is one with a stunted hand that prevents it from swimming well, and they separated from their school to live in the calmer "waters" of the bazaar. However, they didn't know the void had begun to encroach on their sanctuary.

Something that kind of seems a little strange to me, when you defeat mithrix we assume we have killed him. but it's kind of difficult for me to believe hes actually dead. Mithrix was always the more industrious and calculating of the two brothers, when you finally make him fall, he merely fades away into the very bubble he was resting in when you first start the battle......could mithrix have somehow made some sort of pact with the creatures of the void? I'm generally curious about mithrixs plight because if you look around the breadth of the moon stage, its littered with swords and hammers (heck theres even a final fantasy 7 reference). why have so many tools of war when your machines don't have hands? was he making these weapons for someone? also when you are running to escape to the shuttle, why is the entire map being spammed with the beam waves that mithrix used against you in the boss fight while the void creatures invade, was it to stop you? was it meant to stop them? did mithrix even know about the void in the first place? I'm genuinely curious just how deep this rabbit hole goes.

I think the shot of his shattered helmet makes a pretty good case that he's dead, and Providence "fades away" in a similar manner (although, more like a flash of light) when he's killed in Risk of Rain, so I would think that suggests they're dead, but maybe they're not! I've always felt that the two were involved with the Void in some way, but it's been more of a feeling than anything based on lore. Hopefully we get something that will clear up the past of the Brothers sometime! We still have the whole "Her" part of their story that still needs to be fleshed out! Thanks for watching!

Can we take a second to realize how humans beat/made fun of the Voidling and Void Reavers 5 different times? First killing Providence, then Mithrix, then freeing Acrid, then Void Fiend [which was a Commando before being corrupted] escaped and finally killing the Voidling.

What if Providence and Mythrix were building those lunar chimeras to combat against the voidling as the descriptions of the Lunar Chimeras speak about needing speed for war. Its possible that Mythrix was preparing to go to war with the voidling and was pissed that Providence was making these other lifeforms that would not help them against the voidling

Something I found very interesting about mithrix's death is how in previous updates, as he disappeared, a little void ball would appear in his head, which makes me believe he was being taken by the void as well which would make sense considering Mithrix is in the simnilacrum. Although, it seems in this update this void ball has been removed so while interesting it may have been retconned.

Interesting you didn't mention the last part of Acrid's log, implying that the Voidling (or other void force) already bit off more than it can chew and the containment protocols are failing. Was it void fiend that caused the leak? It implies that the problem was coming from inside the system, so probably not humans randomly opening cells. Is this hole in the void security the reason Voidling wants to expand it's reach? Is the presence of void portals a symptom of this breach? Whatever did it and for whatever reason, we can thank them for releasing our doggo.

Oh, I totally meant to, but when editing the video, I didn’t feel like there was enough time for both clips (as in Acrid’s and Void Fiend’s log book entries) to get the time they needed - I felt both would have been too short to really get their message across. I like to think that the Void Fiend is the Classic Commando, not the current one, its clear Commando isn't a title just a troop, with the many bodies seen at the end of the Moon, its obvious their like the cannon fodder for the UES, the newer design is simply just improvements to the commando, Void Fiend is the one who escaped but was trapped. Forever to sit alone in the void, until it is freed. It once had humanity. But that is long gone.

Seeing as they went deeper. Do you think it’s possible that is the plot of the next game? The rescue team seems to have completed their mission but before they come back. They go missing. When people are sent to investigate they find the broken void reavers, jaliors, and devastators and portals to the void. They dive deep looking for their comrades and end up finding them. But the void has driven them mad. Like the voidling, the ones who killed it have been corrupted by the void turning them into gods. The players could be trying to find a way out of the void, bring their friends back, or put an end to their suffering. Either way since they went deeper they will become stronger than imagined. I also wonder about providence and mythrix. Are they actually dead? Mythrix says that they will get it right next time. My hope is that they get reincarnated or something when both of them die. Of course this is unlikely but I like the thought of the brother coming back and retrying. This time working together.

Thanks so much for watching! :) I had plans to do a few more videos focused on some of the survivors (like I did with Acrid), but I just couldn't pull them together in a satisfactory way and got real down on myself, so decided to move on from the series. If there's any future DLC (which I believe GearBox is interested in making), I'll probably revisit the series and make a video or two on that content, but I don't have anything else planned for RoR as of right now (unless Risk of Rain Returns has some new lore, but I don't expect it to). Thanks again for taking the time to watch what you have! Really appreciate it!

Apparently, there’s another unused ending cutscene that shows two Voidlings in a field of multiple Voidlings studying Mithrix’s corpse(or at least what remains of it-a plant) After viewing it for a brief time, their eyes turned blue, suggesting he still has influence even after death. But, this is still cut content-who knows.

Unsettlingly enough, with what we know about the void's simulacrum, and the game's nature as a roguelike, it's hard not to see the whole game as the survivors trapped in the simulacrum even if that's not the case

When I first beat the new boss with 2 of my other friends I was genuinely surprised how there were three phases, good thing I had 3 corrupted four leaf clovers (by the end of the run all my items that weren’t corrupted or already legendary turn into legendary)

What’s interesting is how all void creatures, at least the stronger ones, all take the form of crustaceans. Lobsters, or crablike forms. Dunno if this is a meme on the whole ‘convergent evolution’ thing, where all return to crab, or it’s just purely for the sake of looking neat, and simply all based off of the void reaver

Remember how that in an item description in risk of rain 1 or maybe it was 2, I can't remember it stated that an unknown person or just someone told them to go to the system that contains Petrichor V. In the the barnacles description it shows the instruction given to an unfortunate victim how to get the Void. Perhaps knowing that the Void Reavers couldn't kill Providence and in turn take Petrichor V they told the Contact Light to go to the star system, so that in turn the survivor would kill Providence, which later would also result in the death of Mithrix, thus granting access to "Catalogue" Petrichor V and its wonderful inhabitants.

this is really good! there are a couple of important points which I think were wrong. we know the reavers came to Petrichor V after providence died and before mithrix did, because Acrid was detained between ror1 and ror2, and escaped the void before (or during) ror2! He was only able to escape because of something *else* causing a commotion (IIRC, it was referred to as a "leak") and then returning to Petrichor V. It may be only because of the (presumed) short time Acrid spent in the cells, but this my contradict the void corruption, too. Acrid exhibits no traits of lingering void influence. absolutely awesome video though, you did a marvelous job consolidating all the void info and I look forward to any future lore vids you produce! :D

Happy to hear you enjoyed! :) If they came to Petrichor V after Providence died, how could he have prevented them from taking the planet as is stated in the Bottled Chaos Logbook? The connection I tried to make in the video is that the ruckus mentioned in Acrid's logbook entry was the Void Fiend breaking out of its cell, and I wanted to include both of their logbook entries at that moment in the video (where I mention the Void Fiend escaping), but the timing didn't work out (neither clip would have enough time to be shown and digested) so I decided to just keep the Void Fiend's in there! The Corruption with Acrid is a good point! The only reason I can think that he wasn't corrupted (yet) was because, like you said, he probably wasn't in there very long, or maybe because he wasn't run through simulations. His logbook entry implies that he wasn't conscious in his Cell, which could mean his simulation run hadn't been started yet. I think I may do a couple more videos on Risk of Rain, but we'll see! We know acrid was detained after providences death, since he's on Petrichor V during the events of ror1. definitely something i'd love to see explored or explained by the devs in some form! happy to watch, ill eagerly await future content, risk of rain or otherwise 😊

The thing I’ve noted about the Void is that it definitely had a deep sea theme. Like, the Void Fields have alien seaweed growing, the Void Locus has eldritch whales floating in the distance. Even Void creatures we see are distinctly crustacean, molluscoid or cephalopodean. If space is like an ocean, what if the Void is the bottom of that ocean?

I'm curious if they'll ever explain why regular humans can become god-like in strength by just... picking up normal items (or, "normal" in the sci-fi world of RoR). Obviously for gameplay reasons, and some items' powers make _some_ sense. Like AtG missiles, or Medkits, etc. But other items give you powers based on _ideas_ that the item represents. How does a crowbar make you deal more damage with ranged attacks? Simple - the _concept_ of a crowbar is to break things open in 1 swing. How does the Pocket ICBM make more rockets pop into existence? One explanation is that the guy who made the Pocket ICBM is just obsessed with missiles - and that belief, or _concept,_ gets turned into a power you can use. I may be stretching here. But perhaps Petrichor V itself somehow imbues items with power based on the ideas and concepts surrounding them. The cult of N'kuhana seems to have understood this, they made items (for example, I think they made the Cursed Dagger, but I could be wrong), and imbued them with concepts - _her_ concepts. The stronger an ideal, the more powerful the item. That's why red items seem more "magical" in their powers, like with the Happiest Mask or Shattering Justice. Mithrix could also wield this power, but without Providence's ability to create, his items had... flaws. Drawbacks. The lunar items. They could be powerful, like the Shaped Glass, but they were ultimately inferior to "pure" items, like the ones scattered on Providence's planet. Perhaps something about Providence's power is how ordinary cargo is imbued with these traits? Maybe that's why Providence tried to destroy the Contact Light - he knew humanity would discover the ability of Petrichor V to turn trinkets and ideas into weapons. We still found out anyways... but destroying the Contact Light was a risk he had to take regardless. ...And now the Void wants these items, for some reason or another. Either to contain them, as they pose a threat to the Void itself. Or to use them - by giving the items to the creatures stored in the cells, like in the Void Fields, to strengthen their own army. Either way, the Void doesn't want to let all these weapons fall into anyone else's hands. This is all probably entirely wrong... but I don't think the items we pick up have the same powers they do normally. I think _someone_ would've noticed that. The survivors we play as don't have any items when they're sent down - which yes, is likely due to gameplay reasons... but could be explained lore-wise by items simply not having any powers unless they're on Petrichor V. And the reason humanity isn't aware of that, is because the survivor(s) of the first game left on the Contact Light, which is still missing. Meaning they never made contact with anyone else. Holy shit, I just realized the first survivor(s?) of RoR1 are probably _still out there._ As powerful as (a) god(s). I wonder if that will ever be addressed someday?

I really like this theory, as it could also explain part of why only the survivors and some select natives can pick up and use items. The idea of the item comes not from the item itself but from a sapient and curious being perceiving the item. Void creatures while possessing immense powers may lack the innate spark of creativity required to abstractly represent an idea within an item. That idea could also be why they are so invested in cataloging the universe, if they cannot by themselves create new ideas they must acquire them from beings that can.

I think even "lesser" items like Tougher Times and the Delicate Watch could provide support for your theory. Obviously, we've got to keep in mind that we're playing a game, and there has to be a suspension of disbelief for gameplay purposes, but I could see this being an explanation of things if Hopoo wanted to take it that way! I would think the Survivor of the Contact Light will have to be addressed *someday* whether that's in a DLC or a one of the smaller Content Updates. I think it would be a super cool thing for us to see and it would be nice to get some closure on their story! Thanks for watching, btw! :)

I mean you DO unlock Void Fiend after either 50 rounds of simulacrum or defeating the Voidling so I'd say it's pretty much lore that getting deep into the void in either of those two manners will turn the character into a Void Fiend... I also want to mention that I've always assumed beating the Voidling leads to the simulacrum since it states you're going "Deep, Deeper, Yet Deeper" when you win through that boss fight!

I don't think there's any specific meaning behind it - It's just there to add to the ambience and creepiness of the Void. I could be wrong though, I never actually tried to understand the words the voice is saying. I think the composer, Chris Christodoulou, has a composer's commentary over the whole soundtrack, so maybe he says something about that in his video! Might be worth checking out! What about the shopkeeper? The Newt is shurely somehow connected with the void in some way. Why does he have a void portal under the bazaar? Why does he sell lunar items? Is he Voidling's receptionist or just like the 6th god in the game? Do we know anything about the Newt?? Also i wonder what will be the theme of the next DLC 🤔

We know that he deals with Lunar Items and Coins, which seems to imply an association with Mithrix, but exactly why he would be working with him isn't clear; we know he has an Artificer trapped in his Shop, but we don't know why they were trapped; we know that Void Reavers can be found in the Bazaar, surrounded by Crystals, which, since the Artificer was also surrounded by similar Crystals, could imply the Reavers came to the Bazaar, possibly to detain Newt, and Newt fought them off; we know that there are other creatures like him, other time traveling newts, thanks to his logbook entry, and we know something with "long, pale arms from the depths" grasped him, but what those were are a mystery; we know he would swim out of the "timestream/slipstream" to get some alone time in a "tidepool", but we don't know if that's the Bazaar or if it was somewhere else. We know nearly nothing about him, but I'm sure that as more content for the game is developed, more information about him and his species will be revealed, and they could maybe be a focal point of a future DLC. We'll just have to wait and see... With regards to the next DLC, some people have made a strong case that it may center on the Imps. All the Antagonists of the Risk of Rain series thus far seem to be associated with one of the Four Compounds discovered by Mithrix: Soul - Providence from RoR1 Design - Mithrix from RoR2 Mass - Voidling from SotV (since it is detaining mass from the Universe) That leaves Blood, and which creatures have a Bleeding Effect, and are associated with the color Red? ;) Thanks for watching! :)

I personally see the Void as a metaphysical enforcer of power limitations. Sure, as you defeat Mithrix, the Void Reavers are there to contain the moon, but if you just keep looping, the Void Reavers come after you, specifically. Perhaps they study the captured creatures to find out how their power came to be. I also like the idea of humans being able to amass power through the gathering of items, to the point of toppling a god. One of the many reasons Risk of Rain is so much fun to me.

I personally don't believe that the voiding is the top of the food chain I'm the void, as the suffix -ling usually means something like "one connected with or having the quality of" or "young, small, or inferior one"

Even though it's been a year since this video released I want to make a connection. Note that whenever you "perish" to a void implosion the death sentence specifically capitalizes Time, which is connected to four other words, Design, Soul, Mass, and Blood, all of which have a connection to some sort of entity. Design and Soul being Mithrix and Providence respectively. Mass is most likely relating to the void itself, and how it consumes matter via the void implosions to keep and study. Blood's connection is most likely related to the Red Plane, due to the nature of both the Bleeding debuff inflicted by Imps and the Imp Overlord, another note with this is that the developers said that they wanted to, or were working on a "Imp DLC" most likely relating to the Red Plane and this concept of Blood. Another note is with the scrapped ending cutscene, as it being scrapped feeds into the idea of the Voidling, specifically the -ling part of it, being a smaller, or otherwise weaker version of something infinitely deep within the void, possibly relating to the end of Time.

I was prepared for the Voidling fight, but i didnt keep track of what items i got. So i was surprised that it took one shot + item effects to deplete the health bar. It was satisfying tho.

I think it'd be sick if the survivors that defeat the Voidling and leave through the portal get like. Voided. Voiderized. Adding another character to the roster? Or at least an option to change the existing skills and model to fit the style of the void. Since, y'know, Void Fiend is a voided out Commando. Doing that for others would be neat. But I think best boi Acrid wouldn't change, he's too resistant and strong and good.

how I think void reaver explosion death thing:does about.. 500 trillion (probably) damage, but because of one shot protection, it’s repeated about 10 times to remove one shot protection, if you have so much health that you resist it, I’m gonna guess for a split second it simply just.. gives you everything it can, giving you every buff for a split second, and or making your defense, shields and one shot protection disappear.

i know i'm a bit late on this, but there's one thing that i feel is worth noting about the void, or at least something that relates to it... The Glass Frog. the story you tell is one where the survivors entered the void through the void fields, but that's not the only way there. During the escape sequence, if the survivors are fast enough, they will find a glass frog waiting where they entered from, the frog can be petted for the price of a lunar coin, after the tenth coin, a portal will open, and not just any portal, a deep void portal, skipping the void locus and going straight to the voidling. Amongst all the lore descriptions, there is one that mentions glass frogs, the purity, "...it sounds like two brothers, chasing glass frogs in the sun..." ...doesn't really answer questions, but sparks new one, like how much does The Newt really tie in to the lore of the void, considering The Newt has crystalize storage, the void portal in the bazaar, and the dead reavers around said portal, then where do the glass frogs come from and what powers do they truly have... of course, this could already be answered and i just don't know about it since i basically live under a rock, but hey, least i tried

I love how these are literal gods but you are just a human with a guitar, sunglasses and a missile launcher and kick their butts. It makes me wonder how powerfull an actual human army could be compared to these.

Revisiting this after the news Hopoo will step out from RoR after Gearbox bought the IP and it's sad that we'll never have some answers (and the series will surely become a soulless husk from now on) but it's also good to remember the good things along the way.
