Risk of Rain: An Overshadowed Masterpiece

10 years later, and still one of the best action roguelikes/roguelites ever made. It has a great variety of enemies, characters and items that make for a lot of interesting runs on top of it's unique difficulty scaling system. The modding also makes the game even more replayable than it already is, but should only be explored when you've gotten the gist of the vanilla experience or have completed a run. Also, the soundtrack's still a banger, and the story and setting is quite interesting if you read more into it.
Even in spite of the success of the sequel that seems to be a fully realized version of the first game. Risk of Rain still has that pixel art charm that was ever present in the early indie game era of old school platformers or action games in the early 2010s. With the remaster presumably coming out still, it'll breathe new life into the game while bringing other improvements from the second game.

Despite having dozens of hours in RoR and hundreds in it's sequel, this was still a very pleasant review to watch! I hope the work you put into your videos pays off soon, it's great content.

I put over a hundred hours into Risk of Rain 1 back in Highschool, and let me just say, it's one of those games that, once you learn the game, you will either win every time, or lose right at the start to bad luck. While I did enjoy it a lot, I do think 2 took a lot of what was broken and fixed it. For example, the movement feels better in 3d, as you don't just run and jump over enemies as you go left and right while taking pot shots, and every character can move and shoot, not just huntress. There's also the item rebalancing, such as infusion no longer giving infinite health, and also it also getting reduced by glass. While I do think fondly of the first game, its sequel truly is the overall stronger experience.

Hopefully the remaster will still come out. I might look into doing more runs of 1 with mods but the second one is just insanely good. I can't wait to not shut up about it.

@@brokenportalsTheres 0 chance Risk of Rain 2 will stop being one of my favorite games of all time. The gameplay loop, the visuals, the music, its all so insanely perfect, and it was made by 4 people in total.

If i had a nickel for every 2d action platformer roguelike that was initially supposed to be a tower defense, I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

I’m very thankful for a video like this as someone who actually prefers risk 1 to risk 2. I find that risk 2 is, objectively, the better game. It is a more complete experience and when we eventually get a sequel or dlc added to 2 that will only capitalize on the potential a game like risk 2 has. For me though, I’ve always found the first to be ridiculously fun and it handles difficulty better than the second risk does. The survivors feel more distinct and I like how certain survivors like acrid are completely busted compared to their risk 2 counterparts. I think the remake will be incredible and show just how great the first risk is with all its added features and I’m glad you gave it its flowers.

RoR is one of my favorite games ever. I have mixed feelings on the sequel, I think it falls short on a couple things. there aren't many items for variety and the balance is kind of bad. since items can proc other items on hit, certain items become leagues more valuable than others leading to runs feeling the same after awhile. some survivors have really bad or downright pointless abilities that never got reworked. every event in the game requires you to stand inside a bubble so there's a lot of just waiting around for the teleporter/pillar/void seed to charge. final stage and boss are both extremely boring and don't come close to RoR's final stage. all that being said, I've still sunk hundreds of hours into it because the actual gameplay and controlling your survivor feels so good. being able to scrap items gives you more degree of control over your run and rewards smart planning. it has a really good modding scene and it's so easy to install mods. I've addressed most of my issues with it by adding character mods, balance mods to make it more like RoR1, and tons of items so no run is the same. all in all you won't be disappointed as you don't really notice the lack of content until you've played for dozens of hours already, thanks to the unlock system.

Regarding the balance. Ror2 can be modified to have a more balanced experience if item stacks or combos are a concern. But the unbalanced and chaotic nature is what I love about it.

To be fair, the item balance in the first game is also not great. Just compare a late stage run with frost relic to one without. It really went from being the best item in 2D to one of the worst in 3d

RoR 1 is better than the second in a lot of ways. Items in the first feel a lot more varied, where as in the second everything kinda falls under 3 categories. And the first game is a lot harder, which means its also a lot more rewarding. Runs in RoR 2 kinda all feel the same after a pojnt too. Not to say RoR 2 is bad, I think i'm around 400 hours. Plus the music in RoR 1 is better
