I am a hiker. This is so sad. I can identify with this man on several levels, primarily finding solace in solitude. I wish I had not seen this so late at night. I respect that he took responsibility. Many of us take chances to obtain a little happiness in the wilderness. I hope you are still out there somewhere Otter. I will speak to you the next time I am in the back country.

Or you will see him in heaven. I just can't see hiking alone and taking a risk just for the fun of it. But yeah, my risk while hiking would be at the time when it's a do or die situation or when I realized I was lost. It would be a risk choosing to go left or right.

I can't thank you enough for your brilliant and succinct analysis. PS: I saw the short in which you introduced your wife. That was a touching tribute to the beautiful person you chose to make your adult journey through life with. Too few of us acknowledge or give credit to our better halves on a regular basis. Your knowledge, presentation, and genius are a rare combination of higher cognition, neutrality, empathy, common sense, and really good advice. I recommend you to everyone when the subject of you tube content is discussed. I wish there were more Dr's with your insight and obvious intent to help people navigate more consciously and thereby successfully through the myriad of life's most intense circumstances. Love, a grateful fan. XxxOoo Thank your wife please. I appreciate her also.

As an avid hiker, introvert, and a STEM professional who enjoys solitude I can relate a fair bit to this story. I find comfort and stimulation in exploring forest and in foraging its gifts. I feel more comfortable and safe in an unknown, wild forest, than surrounded by fakers floating around a metropolis. The man's death knell was his refusal to use a satellite-based emergency personal location beacon. This is key to a rapid rescue. I mentioned the PLB to warn others reading this commnent in hopes that a similar death in the wilds won't occur. Carry a PLB even on short and familiar forays. Please. Happy hiking !

I can relate to this guy so much it’s frightening. Bullied, rebel personality, never feeling like I fit in anywhere, very introverted, existentialist.. I’m also an avid hiker. I spend most of my days hiking alone, some days 30kms or more. I had many close calls while out hiking. I have a bad habit of not telling anyone where I’m going. I don’t know why I don’t. This summer I got lost, had no water and forgot to pack my water filter. It was a heat warning that day, over 35C and I was out there all day from before sunrise to almost 7pm. When I finally made it out of the woods and to the nearest store, I was so dehydrated I slammed back a large bottle of water before getting to the register and was so delirious at first I tried paying with some rocks I had in my pocket thinking it was change. But maybe since winter is bearing down on us now (I live in Northern Ontario, Canada), I will take this video as a sign and slow down on the long distance hiking for the winter.

Oh my gosh how horrific and miserable. So much pain...especially physically. The lowest degree of weather I have ever experienced was 15 to 20 degrees, but I was sufficiently clothed AND near warm areas (home, hotels and heated cars). I didn't have to endure very much time in the cold and even THAT was painful to me. I cannot even imagine this poor man freezing to death slowly over a period of days and days. I've done multi-day backpacking trips in the snow when it would get sub zero overnight. It's absolutely awesome, no bugs, so quiet. That said, you have to be completely prepared or it could get dangerous very fast. I usually had enough warm clothing that I would be sweating if I didn't take layers off. At night you'd be sweating in your layered sleeping sacks, then freezing as you let in a little air to cool down. It was funny, we'd be completely covered by our mummy bags, just leaving our nose and mouth out to breathe. You'd get frozen condensate on your tent so you'd basically wake up in an igloo. This was pre cellphone days, but I'd never go solo, and we always had multiple people that knew our location and expected return time.

I'm a novice mountaineer, no seriously big climb or anything, but I've bivied at elevation over 10,000ft on occasion in unheated tents during the Winter Season at near 0 Fahrenheit. Even with all my layers on and wrapped like a mummy, its painfully cold at night, had to cuddle my water bottle so it wouldn't freeze. I can't imagine how agonizing Mr. Olshansky final days must have been as his supplies ran out. While awful, his lack of preperation was fatal, I take it his clothing may not have been adequate and neither were his boots insulated since he complained about his toes often.

Lagunitas Campground has a vehicle-accessible road to it. The village of Tres Piedras is about 25 miles down that road. He had a tent and warm clothing, and -- though awkward and uncomfortable -- pine boughs strapped to one's feet function as adequate snowshoes. Even a few miles a day would have gotten him out in just a few days. Yes, he'd have had to bivouac in a snow-cave that he carved out in some sheltered spot, but it wouldn't have been any colder than a damned cinderblock outhouse, and probably a good deal warmer. That he had waited eleven days (!) before leaving his campsite and hiking 3 miles to Lagunitas was his downfall. In that time, he could have hiked OUT from Lagunitas, even if he only pushed on every other day. I'm sad for him and I think it's dreadful that he died that way, but I seriously have to question if he was all that "experienced" or if he had just hitherto been lucky. Backpackers know better than to expect rescue.

@@jordanlyd8691 Absolutely. An RV-accessible road in the wilderness is pretty hard to miss. Plus, stop the video he took (4:42) when he was still at his campsite 3 miles from Lagunitas. You can see his footprints there, and the snow looks to be no more than about ankle deep. The sun is shining brightly. Yet he stayed there almost two weeks "waiting for someone on a snowmobile to come along." (Had he no idea how VAST the Carson is?) I could almost wonder if this guy wanted to commit suicide, but also wanted to soften the blow for his family and give them closure (dying in a place he was BOUND to be found). In any event, NOTHING he did suggests the work of an experienced outdoorsperson.

@@pricklypear7516 The problem was he had been stuck at his first camp too long before he got to Lagunitas. He was likely out or nearly out of food. He wouldn't have had the reserves of energy to both hike and do the camp prep. It might be an RV capable road, but it sounds like two to four feet of snow. You can make snowshoes, but if you have to keep adjusting and repairing them, that's another drain on energy.

Huh I’m a little puzzled why he wasn’t better prepared and didn’t survive. Set traps forage push that SOS on your Garmin. TA DA saved. And get a map, mark it out the route your going to take. Leave that back home. I’d make skies out of wood not flexible tin. I went for a hike and found springs a cinnamon colored blackbear, a spring filled up an area shaped like a doughnut, where all the trees all the wood was taken off of them. There’s just long tree trunks going straight up to the sky and it was a sanctuary for all these birds in beaver and deer and they never seen people they weren’t scared and didn’t run away, I found old moonshine bands where they had the drums to keep the moonshine in and old jars and bottles that were at least 100 years old. When prohibition was I made a man who lived on an island not a picture of his dad sitting in the kitchen with Al Capone doing his moonshine run. I found magazines that were over 100 years old old stoves I guess the worst thing about camping and hiking bugs, but even bugs can be managed. Sloping and falling is the biggest problem. Emergency blankets are light. As an experienced hiker he should have been more prepaid. Leaving high probably contributed to him not being prepared.

What saddens me most about his story is that his death would have been kind of terrible just sitting there and freezing and probably a little bit of starvation, as well as being alone with his own thoughts for days. That is why he tried to hasten his own death because he knew that letting it play out would not be pleasant. Yay, the five-factor model! I miss that alot. I'm from NM, and if the comfort station in Lagunitas is similar to the other state and national parks here, it's no surprise he wasn't able to suffocate himself, they're pretty porous structures. It's horrible that he died like this, but the wilderness out here is no joke. So many people get lulled into a false sense of security close to Albuquerque when they go hiking out on the West Mesa or up in the Sandia and Manzano mountains, since the view of the city makes it feel like you're not far from civilization. In reality, it's so easy to die, which surprises me about Stephen -- he probably knew things can go wrong extremely quickly. Such a shame.

I do this all the time and have done since I was 15 years old. Both totally alone and with a friend or two. When you have the skills and know what to do, is if far from as dangerous as many things that you most likely do all the time. Like driving your car. Crossing a busy street on foot. Being in areas where crimes happen. Or a lot of other things. I can survive for weeks or even months in the wilderness with only what I can carry with me. We have to appreciate the level of empathy Stephen had, even while dying torturous death. Even in that moment he thought about a person that would find him, and made sure to warn them before they see him. As if he was trying to reduce the level of trauma as much as it is possible considering the circumstance.

You are overreacting. I suggest you get professional help with overreacting. You are far far more likely to die from lifestyle choices like a poor diet and lack of exercise or from an accident like in a car. You are 99.999% going to live to see home after a hike if you take basic precautions like the ones listed in this video. Carry a PLB, hike prepared both with materials and training, and leave a detailed itinerary with friends who will call SAR if you fail to return. Being a triple crowner, meaning he completed all the AT, PCT, and CDT, probably made Otter complacent in terms of taking basic precautions, which as Otter would have admitted was his mistake.

Dr. Grande's empathetic take on the Five Factor Model of Personality helps his audience relate to or reject the people in his videos by watching his eyes, facial expressions, and body language and by listening to his words and the tone of his voice. This sad case is one of his best. As another lover of the great outdoors from the Pacific Northwest you once visited, Stephen, I hope that you rest in peace now.

I can totally relate to this guy. I am also a loner and do long distance hiking. I have also gotten into trouble with unexpectedly early and heavy snowfall in the mountains. I have also gotten lost and know the panic and fear. In addition, I have met people and groups of people that go into the mountains totally unprepared and inexperienced. They wear the wrong clothing and bring the wrong gear and overestimate their own fitness. If I were Stephen, I would have hiked out by returning the way I came, even with deep snow it would have been his best chance.

Because he wasn't injured, this case has always mystified me. Most hikers carry multiple fire makers and some tools. I just do not understand how he didn't fabricate some snow shoes, a better shelter, etc. As long as he could stay warm, and had some food, he could eventually self rescue or be rescued.

When Stephen said his predicament was due to “the life I lead” perhaps he was referring to the risk-taking that marked his adventures. After all, he did give up carrying a GPS device with location beacon on his last trip which might have just saved his life.

This dude toughed it out for several months and was tested beyond what most of us will ever know. P.s.: As kind if a fun note, and not intended to be at his expense but the dude has a story like one of the letters you find left behind in "the last of us" R.i.p.

The man is an avid hiker and one should at least think he would often not be in distance of a normal cell tower. So why no satellite phone? So maybe your chances of getting stranded in a blizzard are low? Ok, but what about breaking/spraining your ankle so bad you really can't walk very far.

He was just low on funds. Also he was super high on weed, which impaired critical decisions, and may have gotten the flu... that's not suicide. He was an extremely experienced long distance hiker who perhaps got too comfortable because of his extensive, excessive of 4000 miles, of trail hiking on the AT, PCT, and CDT, deciding on almost a whim to head south on the cdtin alpine areas way past the time of year that he should have.

I know this may be a different perspective, but this is what I take away from this, just my own personal experience…. My bio-dad, for his own personal reasons, which he has never shared with me, chose to live in many different parts of the country … away from us, his children. I’m 61 now, he’s 83. I still miss him, every day. For whatever his reasons, he may have done what he felt he had to do, away from those who loved & needed him the most. I’m trying to say, I guess, is that sometimes people who don’t feel accepted, are truly missed by the ones who love them the most. I am genuinely sorry for this gentlemen’s losses.
