My dad went through the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was severely wounded and was one of the first wounded sailors to return home. Rita came and picked him up in her car and escorted him to a Navel hospital in Corona. My dad never talked about his experience at Pearl Harbor but he always talked about Rita's kindness to him. A great human being.

Rita Hayworth is a Hollywood icon. Gorgeous. But so much more. She was a talented actress, singer, and extraordinary dancer. Her 2 films with Fred Astaire are astonishing. He said later on that she was his favorite dance partner and the best dancer. But her childhood was so damaging. Between her father's "advances" and being forced to perform so young, she didn't stand a chance. Despite all that, Orson Welles said she was the sweetest, gentlest woman he ever knew. Thanks, Karine, for this touching tribute to the legendary Rita Hayworth. ❤❤

Orson was a difficult man but he wasn't cruel to her. They both had affairs. (She had an ongoing thing with Glenn Ford) Orson loved and respected Rita. He also directed her in what I consider by far her best role, Elsa in Lady From Shanghai. Gilda is more iconic but Elsa is the meatier and more dramatic role. She goes full gangster in that mirror shout out.

This poor woman was so heavily traumatized that she was abusing alcohol just to survive which in part led to her decline into Alzheimer's Disease. It seems the constant trauma and having little to no personal sovereignty was internally killing her. Although she was forced to work from a very young age, beyond what any child should be ordered to do, with the grueling practicing, schedules, performing, etc, I understand she was quoted as saying that the happiest she ever was was when she was dancing. If you look at footage of her films where she is dancing, you can sometimes see that exuberance in her face and eyes, when she was truly happy. May she be at peace on the other side with no more pain and her heart be joyful and free while she is dancing. RIP, Rita. 🌹

It's sad to see how unhealed trauma leaves people feeling unworthy of love and respect. She accepted poorly behaved men in her life and lashed our in alcoholic fuelled rages because she never came to peace with those traumas. The good she had inside radiated from her and captivated so many. Unfortunately it also drew in abusers who were immature and also hadn't dealt with their own emotional traumas.

She lashed out because she was being attacked. Stop dehumanizing women into "mental health issues" when they are just existing and someone attacks them. The guys that attacked her are horrible, mentally unstable people. Rita is a great actress and lived a great life in spite of the mental people trying to hurt her. She survived. In the 1940s, my father worked as a busboy at a club where Rita Hayworth appeared every night (and where Tommy Dorsey with Frank Sinatra performed). Among his duties at night's end was not only cleaning tables, but waiting for Rita to finish vomitting in the lady's room before he carried her out, inebriated, to her limosuine. Even at the peak of her stardom she was miserable.

Honestly, I MUCH prefer the theater. I don't know about Broadway. In fact, I know next to nothing about Broadway. However, my experience with local theater has been, with only one exception, wonderful. And as I said in another comment, I have seen special young children absolutely BLOOM from their experiences on the stage. They are taught to be confident in themselves, not just when it comes to acting or singing or dancing, but just BEING. Being in public, with people watching you, and still holding onto your sense of self. Not to mention the help it gives in public speaking. AND, even the most spoiled brat must accept direction, in a stage production, unless the spoiled brat is also the director. And whether you're working on stage, at an office, or out on a road crew, you need to be able to accept direction. It's a truly valuable skill. However, local theater is sort of self-limiting. The rehearsals are done in the evenings, and CANNOT last all day long, every day. And the play runs for a few weeks, and then it's switched for something else. Even if a child wants to be in every show, it's unlikely they will be, because the parts are limited and varied. The only guarantee is that there will be at least one adult part in every show. So, yeah, local theater is awesome. Once you get onto a professional scale, however, the limits are removed, and it's possible to destroy a person's life with overwork, and excuses for why they just HAD to do this thing or that thing, "In order to get the performance we need, to please the audience and to create great ART." And that is where things start to go off the rails. Like the way they forced Judy Garland to take drugs, just to keep going at the ridiculous pace they set. Not to mention the DANGEROUS scenes they filmed with her, WITHOUT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. "Oh, sure, she could have died, and she DID injure herself, but we got the shot! Give her a few pain pills, and a good night's sleep, and she'll be ready to perform again tomorrow!" You just don't get that in local theater, because unless you live in a horror-movie town, the people in town won't LET you.

Thank you for this video! My mother was a real twin of Rita Hayworth. It was spooky. My Dad said that my mother used to have people ask for her autograph and not believe her when she said she wasn't her. I believe it. My mother too was a gifted ballroom dancer until she got MS when there was no treatment and was paralyzed for 15 years. She died only 2 years after Ms. Hayworth. When I see her in the movies, and look at my mother's pictures, it is a comfort. My mother was blessed to have only one husband, my Daddy, for all her life. He took loving care of her until her death. Such a tragic end for them both.

It's so ironic how most women (including myself) would give anything to be as beautiful as these famous actresses, only to find out their lives were full of misery and abuse. Makes me think: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! ... Rita Hayworth is one of my favorite actresses. I saw Gilda in the 90s when I was only 14 and loved her since then. Yes people need to be careful how they explain things. Spanish people are from Spain. Hispanic people are from Latin America and have Spanish heritage along with indigenous or African. Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas are Spanish. Salma Hayek is Mexican, so Latina although she also has Lebanese heritage like Shakira who is Colombian. Cameron Diaz is a white Latina. But perhaps Spanish people could still be seen as not white like the Irish and Italians too. They were seen on the same level as black people. Maybe as they have darker skin sometimes and darker eyes. I noticed Americans mix up Hispanic and Spanish which UK people don't do. Because Spain is next door and the UK doesn't really have Hispanic people per se

It’s funny how Hollywood saw dark hair as too Spanish….I work with a woman who is french, soanish snd italian and is blonde haired and blue eyed, who’s ex husbsnd is straight down the line spaniard. And he’s paler in skin and has ginger/auburn hair. A lot of spaniards are like this. Hollywood is was so narrow minded.

She was mesmerizing, wasn't she? And that line... men go to bed with Gilda & wake up with me. I believe Sharon Stone said something similar. It's sad. Thanks for keeping the memories of those women alive. Women have really been going through it for a long time. It's a reminder that feminism wasn't born from frivolous reasons, just like the # me too movement. The older I get & the more I learn, the harder I cry for my mother's generation, my grandmother's generation & all the previous ones. Can't help it

Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Sofia Loren, Joan Crawford, Dorothy Dandridge... That's why in my opinion they got this strong appeal. We can feel they were tough, survivors. They really got humble begenings and succed to transform their life to having the World at their feet by their own hands!

Rita Hayworth did have a tragic life. Starting with her father. It's really a shame that her marriages were disappointed. Rita Hayworth was thought to be an alcoholic. She had Dementia. She reminds me of my grandmother a little. Very beautiful and hardworking, with a difficult and sad childhood that would make most people very bitter & suspicious of everyone around them, and yet loving and grateful for anything good in her life. Also enormously talented (my grandmother was an artist). My God. I *DESPISE* her marriages!!!! And *WHYYYYYYY* in the hell was Princess Yasmeen going through the trash under the supervision of a babysitter??? So she was NEVER an alcoholic. She had early onset Alzheimers. I am not surprised that she wasn't an alcoholic. All that physical activity dancing and working as an actress is not conducive to being an alcoholic.

A very beautiful lady with a very sad life. Her "european" look was stunning, but I actually prefered her latin look when she had black hair. Regardless, she was indeed mesmerizing. I think she, Judy Garland, and Marilyn were extremely exploited and completely misunderstood. They were robbed their humanity and turned into fantasy characters that they were forced to embody. No one cared about who they really were as human beings. Even today, Hollywood is run by evil men (Weinstein is one of them, but there are many others who have not yet been caught). Not all that glitters is gold.
