I think "invent" is a wrong word choice...Without any doubt Ritchie was the first popular rock guitarist to employ classical derived phrasing (operative word being "popular")

Blackmore might have took classical guitar lessons for a year but IMO he did not create the heavy metal sub genre known as Neoclassical .Ritchie was a blues guitarist and then he decided to go into a more jazz guitar oriented music .the neoclassical sub genre was created Randy Rhoads after teaming up with Ozzy Osborne in 1979 to form the Blizzard Of Ozz Band .It was at this time Randy Rhoads was given the freedom by Osborne to be himself when writing songs for their debut album .Randy had been in Quiet Riot a glam rock band that he formed in the mid 70s with his high school best friend after teaching him to play the bass guitar .Randy had seen Mick Ronson the guitarist in David Bowie 's band and was really inspired by Micks stage presence and wanted to emulate his style and looks and create a band similar to Bowie .Randy had also been impressed with Glen Buxton after attending a Alice Cooper concert .Buxton was a heavier Rock guitar player than Ronson using power chords and blistering solos more in line with other players in the early 70s hard rock bands .so when he joined with Osborne he needed to create a hard rock or heavy metal music something he was not familiar with playing so he drew from his deep knowledge of classical guitar and music theory to create a new and unique style of music that had never been seen before .and after the success of the bands first album his creativity was pouring out and the compositions he wrote for the bands follow up album Diary Of A Madman had taken the music to places that had never existed before .it wasn't just classical influenced it was hard rock with actual real elements of classical music using not just classical guitar but also string arrangements incorporated into his compositions .it was with this Album Diary Of A Madman that the sub genre known as Neoclassical Metal was born .

Lol, Randy Rhodes, the most overrated guitarist of all time, just because he died young. No, it was Blackmore alongside Lord (who influenced all the neoclassical metal keyboarders like Jens Johansson, Alex Staropoli or Janne Wirrman. Concerto for Group and Orchestra was pretty much the start of it and if you don't see the neoclassical metal in Rainbow, i don't even know what to say. Then you had others, for example Uli Jon Roth before Rhodes as well.

Yes he did he incorporated classical ideas into his solos during Mark 1 purple and example would be mandrake root solo and was the only guitarist from that era that sweep picked . Rhoads ,Malmsteen took it to the next level later on
