A police officer investigates a religious family's missing daughter.
RITUAL is used with permission from Robert Linsley. Learn more at ritualthemovie.com.
The Devlin family lives on a remote farm in Australia, left alone to live an existence based upon the most important thing in their lives: God.
But when their eldest daughter disappears, a local cop's arrival ruptures their carefully isolated world. His investigation unearths disturbing aspects of the family, but the truth is much darker than anyone imagines.
Writer-director Robert Linsley's powerful and disturbing drama focuses its meticulous, precise sense of craft and storytelling on the nature of religious fanaticism, and its insidious influence on the most intimate and personal aspects of a family and human being.
It begins with a remarkable sense of economy and mystery, with little dialogue and explicit information given by the pared-down writing to guide the viewers. Yet the striking images -- washed out in color, sweeping in motion yet precise and almost rigid in their sense of composition -- are rich with meaning and implication. This family's world is ordered by its adherence to religion, at the cost of love, connection and intimacy. In the place of these elements are pain, punishment, isolation and the sacrifice of anything resembling familial affection in service of a punitive God.
The arrival of the police detective moves the story forward, and his search for answers moves us deeper into this strange, ominous world. As the film's beacon of normality, viewers can see that what he uncovers is disturbing and horrific, and distinctly disordered.
The film's range of performances also reflect this: as the detective, actor Sam O'Dell has the facile and ease of a modern world, but his opposing counterparts -- led by actors Gary Sweet and Alison Whyte as the Devlin parents -- seem to exist in another old-fashioned, strangely constrained story entirely. The chasm between the styles works well here, especially as the forces that each side represents clash against one another.
As the narrative momentum moves forward, RITUAL gains in speed and suspense, working its way into a finely wrought ending sequence worthy of thriller status. There's even a subtle yet stunning reveal that may prompt viewers to re-watch, searching for clues that the elegantly sculpted writing carefully tucked away in plain sight.
But even as it picks up in tension, the film's richly conceived world and atmosphere guarantees that the film's central concerns and questions are never lost. What is the role of religious belief, and what kind of influence does it wield on human lives, especially when those lives are stripped bare of anything else? The answers teased at here are disturbing, but are in perfect alignment with the film's considerable aesthetics -- and resulting in a remarkable unity of thought, emotion and atmosphere that makes for intelligent, compelling storytelling.

If they were just doing scary special effects, no need to explain them. Most people have never seen those kinds of lashings. If we want to look for real causes, they were probably both lashed with something with metal barbs at some point for some particularly egregious offense. I never had to deal with that thank goodness, at least not over religious reasons. But knowing this sort of thing is why I also never liked Christianity: Always saw God as an angry man with a stick telling you what to do or how to be, rewarding you if you obey and punishing you otherwise. Only in the last very few years I realized that was very wrong... still not big into the religion but changed my views on other things which the religion itself sometimes only ruined.

Look up "Opus Dei". They're a particular sect that has a very nasty political reputation and a reputation for lashings, including self-flagellation, as part of their practices. The rosary itself is normally used to count prayers, but there is nothing considered "wrong" with holding one as a holy symbol, especially when praying to Mary. Maybe Bridget killed the last detective, and since she was sent away from the family (or possibly committed suicide which the hanging doll imagery may symbolise), her brother assumed that in order to free himself from the torture of his parents he'd have to sin, and since they've been taught not to sin, the only unholy thing he may have known to do is exactly what his sister did, so he killed the new officer only to finally be free and join his sister in eternal freedom and peace?? Idk just a thought.

Every religion has extremists , every belief has extremists . Religion can become dangerous when extremists te involved though , because religion is designed to make people fear from straying from the beliefs . Religions not flexible but can be enforced to different degrees , those who are scared enough of the consequences of straying can become extremists , extremism is more about doing whatever is in their power to keep on the path . The issue is no religion has a rule of when too far is too far , making these extremists do what they do to try to show they are the most loyal to their god/s . Religion isn’t a bad thing , but it’s dangerous if it’s interpreted in the wrong way or to the wrong degree.

Ok. Bridget means “virtue”. Bridget has been missing for a week. The dad, mr Devil, has been apologizing to God for his sins - on his knees, begging, crying. He is unreasonably mad at his son Michael - punishes him for a minor thing, for slumping in bed. Tells me the dad is angry at Michael for a different reason, right? He almost despises him. Dad wants the cops to go away because he knows what happened to Bridget. Maybe he is protecting Michael, because Michael killed his twin sister? A sister Michael totally obsessed about like some creep (ew) until his stalking behavior became straight up murder. Bridget = virtue, good person. Michael = bad...psychopath. Evil. Poor mom still holds on to hope that Bridget just ran away. And Dad needs a vacay. The end.

Michael= "psychopath and evil"? Where did you get that from the Halloween franchise or The Omen? Archangel Michael is the strongest and chief of all the angles, only Gabriel is also mentioned and revered in the Bible outside of the book of Enoch. Michael often brought Gods wrath but I would not call that evil he guided Davids stone. Bridget(Brighid) origins come from Ireland and means "exalted one", it's non Biblical but every European Christian name was given to a saint at one time in history but it comes from Druid Pagan times. That is odd, because very religious families like that use strict names from the Bible.
