Rivarossi 5451 Hudson Santa Fe # 3460. NOS I acquired a few months ago. Let's take it all apart and see what makes it tick, Give it a fresh lube job and see how she runs. Plus a brief history on the 3460 "class" of Super Hudsons and what they pulled.

A great video to say the least, however I feel some extra notes are warranted. There was a car the Santa Fe painted up into their Blue Goose livery, that being their only Pendulum car, which has similar tilting train tech to that of an Amtrak Talgo trainset. Another thing is the "Chief" and "Super Chief" passenger trains were actually two different trains that the Santa Fe ran. And one last thing is that the model is somewhat inaccurate, due to being based on the NYC Dreyfuss Hudson, leading to things like the coal tender on an oil burning engine. All said and done though, this was a splendid video and really good for some of us who may look into getting one at some point.

I think during my research that 2 cars were painted to match but it was a hit and miss. could not get more than one story on it so I didnt pursue it. I did reference that the chief and super chief were two different names of specific trains. Perhaps I did not do a very good job. I did wonder why I read they were oil burners and this tender was a coal hauler. Your information is good to me. The Goose had a bulge on the fireman side of the front of the boiler to accommodate the raising of the smoke stack. I did read about that. I enjoy others passing along there information, thank you for taking the time to type it out :-)

This is a nice look at the red box series. As far as the Santa Fe Super Chief, Amtrak took over on May 1, 1971, but I think the train was combined with the El Capitan around 1968. During this time, I'm not sure if the Santa Fe held on to the Super Chief name for the combined trains, but they were particular about Amtrak using the name and how the train operated. Amtrak decided to rename the train to the Southwest Chief to get away from the Santa Fe influence in order to operate the train in Amtrak's standards.

Here's the Wiki article to better understand the whole name change. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwest_Chief

I read Amtrak licensed the name "super chief" for awhile. Then Santa Fe pulled the license because Amtrak was in poor state of disrepair. Once Amtrak cleaned up their image and equipment the license was re-instated.

I particularly enjoyed this video because I have almost the same locomotive but in the NYC Streamlined Dreyfus version. The chassis looks just like yours, motor and all. I know it looks simple inside, and as long as everything works, it is simple. But if you ever have to dig deep, OMG! I still don't know what happened to mine before I got it. It ran well at first, then would fail to stay engaged in gear. I tore it apart - completely apart - more than 10 years ago. Every few years I pull it out, fight with it for a while and put it back for another few years. After many failures, I finally decided that I can not repair the original motor/gear mechanism, so I am down to 2 choices: replace the entire chassis with one I got on ebay and repaint the drivers and cylinders OR pull off one of the drivers on the original chassis and install an NWSL drive that I I also have. The tender on mine is cemented in place with pillars that go from frame to the top inside of the tender body. I was afraid it would break if I tried too hard to separate the parts. I am envious of yours that comes apart with just a screw. The instructions in mine are dated 1995; I guess they smartened up about the tender over the next 3 years. A few months ago, I learned that Rivarossi had a lot of problems with that locomotive; I think one was motors burning out. Hornby bought out Rivarossi and doesn't even stock replacement parts. BTW there is an idler gear between the worm and the drive gear. Just more adventures in model railroading!
@classicmodeltrains
@classicmodeltrains 11 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear yours is giving you troubles. Sounds like you have many options to get it back on the road. I would try the NWSL route. Perhaps better engineered than the original? Yeah I noticed the stacked brass gears during the tear down. I neglected to mention it clearly. Thanks for the great information :-)

Super. My railroad has seven different coupler conversion cars, which cover for the nine different types of couplers in use, and I bet the Maerklin Relex or the Mantua loop cars would couple right to that locomotive. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

You gave me the courage to open my NYC 2328 up. It was converted to DCC with a QSI decoder. It is frustrating though. It stops and starts. Clearly not getting consistent juice. I ordered one of those fiberglass pens and I am going to go through all the pickups and wheels and everything to try to get this going. I can flip it over and connect the track wires to the pickup wire and it runs fine so I know the intermittency is being caused by the pickups. Probably could use a better keep alive too. See how it goes and report back to the Station Master! Thanks for a great video and great humor.

Only Rivarossi items I have are 4 coaches with the Southern Crescent livery. They are not illuminated but that will change very soon. I have my ESU current collectors, part #50707, now and I'm ready to do it. I've already changed out the talgo trucks to body mounted Kaydee couplers with metal wheel sets. I'll be using LED strips with a full wave bridge rectifier with a 3300uF capacitor. I sometimes am hesitant about weathering a brand new locomotive, but it HAS to be done. Cheers from eastern TN

Het there Ron. Yea, you did get to figure out those blessed sprung contacts, that contact the driver backs. Rivarossi used that system on a lot of their steamers. Would have been a pretty good system, if only the springs insde those contacts, didnt break.I dont think those contacts are very DCC friendly, as the higher voltage of DCC, tends to melt the aprings, inside those contacts. Leaving you "up the creak", trying to get the loco to pickup current.If only one could get spare parts.....oh well.. Lovn the maintenance videos, Ron. Cheers Michael NZ
