River crossing in Botswana nearly ends in Disaster for one lucky Toyota Hilux owner.

For many 4x4 lovers, water crossings provide the most exhilarating, unforgettable experience; however, they can offer challenges of their own.
These challenges are sometimes not for the faint hearted and have proven to be the most expensive.
The actual depth that you can cross depends on the height of your vehicle and its ground clearance. The general rule remains; if the water is above your wheels, it is probably too deep to cross mate.
A video of a Toyota Hilux went viral on social media recently with many users applauding the driver for his bravery; others claim it is the power of Toyota that got him through the river, while the rest humorously said that his Bush Lapa pushed him through successfully.
Did the Bushlapa caravan push the Toyota Hilux through the water crossing? or Should Toyota consider manufacturing vehicles that can also serve as boats?
Here's what happened when one extremely lucky 4x4 Overlander found himself in some deep water.

I have this philosophical difference with the rest of the 4x4 community where a 4x4 is supposed to get me out of trouble and not into trouble --- this is not to be emulated since only the skill of this driver got him out of a situation where the other nine out of ten drivers would have not have pulled this off without being rescued.

Absolutely Tshepo. But remember, it is extremely likely that this vehicle has been modified with many aftermarket 4x4 accessories such as suspension upgrades, tyres, snorkel, bash plates (under amour), lift kits, etc... No standard production 4x4 vehicle is ready to tackle this level of river crossing without it. Much in the same way that an ice skater needs ice skating boots before going on ice... 4x4 vehicles that begin overlanding must be equipped to do so.

Which can cause problems with mechanisms that turn, cavitate or need a decent amount of grease for smooth operation. A team traveling from Morocco to Cape Town in brand new 70 Series TLC's, had to replace six differentials three months after their return. Oil seals on the axle ends are designed to keep oil in, not water out. Their stupid look-rough trucks had rather tiny, inadequate diff breathers. The factory didn't fit proper ones. Even ASPW had to spend a small fortune in installing proper breathers to his then brand new Troopy. Cannot the manufacturer use savvy and install proper components like on some Patrols and all Geländewagens?

Although we didn't get any visuals from the videographer, in our experience he inner cab must have been something like a fish tank! In our overlanding courses, we usually learn not to venture into water deeper than that of your tyres. Which does only limit water coming in through the footwells. However, as we see in this video, the water was far beyond the drivers bonnet, it would be safe to assume that river water would have poured in through the aircon ducts, electrical ports and dashboard console.

This debate about which bakkie / 4x4 is the best is getting really tiring!! It has very little to do with the make of bakkie / 4x4 and a lot to do with the driver and his / her experience. With the appropriate skills and experienced driver a GWM will go where a Toyota go, so will a Ford and a VW (my Touareg went everywhere) and so will Jeep and Range / Land Rover etc. Water - rule no1 unless you can see what is under the water or willing to walk the route or cross at a crossing you don’t drive into water unless you have an amphibious vehicle.

Toyota, whether it's Toyota Cruiser or Hilux, there is just this engineering fortitude and tenacity in Toyota brands that defeat terrains. I guess even the Toyota Camry or Corolla can cross that river 😁😁😁
