An experience we had paddling the Uwharrie river and encountering a snag. I released this video in the hopes that it can help people understand the dangers associated with snags in a river.

It’s what you have to do. When you are miles from anywhere and hours away from help, you have to look out for each other.

That's an important lesson. The dangers of fallen trees over water are often underestimated. However, stepping out of your boat is not always an option. If your foot gets caught between rocks or roots and you fall over, you can drown even in shallow water. So, only do it if there are people to help you, like in this video, or if you can see that the ground is safe.

With a tree over the water like this, I think staying in the boat is what gets most people trapped. The man that got caught here a couple of weeks before, was in a kayak and had trouble getting out of his kayak, once it was pulled under the tree. I do agree that it is dangerous to step into unknown water. I have stepped out of my canoe into water that was one foot deep, at one spot, and four feet deep right beside it. The Uwharrie river is like a lot of rivers with a rocky bottom, you never know what the bottom is like. The good news is everyone is okay and the tree has been removed. But everyday trees fall into rivers so always be expecting one around the corner. Thank you for your comment.

@@CHARLESCRANFORD That's true, of course. Getting trapped under a tree can get you drowned as well. Where I paddle most of the time, new trees are in the water after each storm. Usually, they are not removed as most of the area is a nature reserve.

Good to see more solo canoeist out! What height is this at? We just did High Pine church to Morrow mnt Saturday at 2.5ft and 85cfs and it seemed low. I believe around 3.25+ would be optimal.
