Scenes of the 'River of Ice' at Niagara Falls, Jan.21, 2019. While appearing calm from the distance, it is nothing but a fierce, brutal battle between water and ice down in the gorge. After several days of recent cold weather (today's daytime temp. was -12C), it is the ideal scenario for an Ice Bridge to form. (On Jan.17th the river was completely clear of ice) This is how the Niagara River usually looks just pre-Ice Bridge, as the ice shelves on either bank build up and out, slowly constricting the main center flow to the point where the surface ice stops moving. At that point, the river, still flowing under the stopped ice, continues to deposit more ice from underneath, causing the entire ice sheet to rise and solidify. As I was watching, the river ice had almost come to a stop and was barely moving (as seen at the beginning of the video). But the river's central current pushed through, and slowly, the massive accumulation of river ice got moving again. This process repeats itself over and over until the right circumstances line up for an Ice Bridge to form. This video encompasses over 2 hours of real-time river activity. Enjoy!

I am so lucky, I live only a block and a half up from the Niagara Gorge, 15 minute walk up to the American Falls. The ice is a common sight for us, but still darn impressive. Do come and visit, but be prepared - it's COLD!

I visited the fall last Friday(feb 1st). It was bitter cold -16 celsius). The river was all frozen. The American side of fall was frozen almost 80%, and Canadian fall, maybe 10%. I live 140 kms, away from the fall, took 1/2 day off wrok just to experience the amazing nature's gift.

Looks like the water particles are warmer than the air, therefore forming steam. They may be at 0C and the air at -12C.

Great video, RightInNiagara! I wonder what the consistency of the ice on the river is. Could a person stand on it, or is it slushy. I can't imagine the ice floe has much time to solidify being so close to the falls like that. Great job with the time-lapses, zooming and panning. It is a very interesting video that I'll bookmark and watch again!

Thanks dj! if it has time to build, it will be very strong. If you look at the margins, where the ice shelf is, that's at least 10 ft thick at the edge. There's more ice below the waterline.The thing is, the power of the river keeps sweeping the ice formation away, so it is amazing it even manages to start at all!! I'll have another vid coming up soon showing the scene as it was on Jan.22nd

The river ice IS moving to the left, which is downstream. but, along the U.S. bank. the river actually does flow UPstream in the area near the Adams tunnel outflow (as seen about 04:20) This characteristic though, occurs year round, and has nothing to do with winter weather; but, when there is ice on the river, it becomes easier to actually see these opposite flows at the same time.

dav snow: My video went 'live' at about 3am on Jan.22. So, exactly 2 days later (3am Jan.24), the view count is around 21, 200. I am happy that people seem to like it. (ABC's overlords are the Disney people, who in fact DO have squillions {!!} to spend on content!)

@@RightInNiagara : I'm glad things are looking up, and views are rapidly increasing. It's quite likely that you'll be the "go to person" for future footage for ABC and other news outlets, now that they know you can hold a camera steady, compose an interesting image and keep it in focus. The audio commentary was interesting too. Good luck.

Warnings... of WHAT exactly?! The formation of an ice bridge at Niagara is in no way an unusual event - it is a common occurrence during winter, and ought not be considered frightening.

Global warming causes more unstable weather which can cause extremes of cold too. There average temperature of the earth IS rising from global warming but the knock on effects of that are very complicated.
@siggizippan8076
@siggizippan8076 5 жыл бұрын
It is not Global warming but Climate Change which causes extreme weather, in the north we get "polar vortex". which means extreme colds, like we had in Manitoba of -55 Celsius and in Australia a extreme heat of +50 Celsius. How long can this earth survive in these extremes?
