"I'm in the family way." Okay, there is NO WAY that they got that scene in one take. They had to have stopped it at least once because somebody was doubled over in laughter.

I wanted to marry my grandpa til I was almost four... When I proposed, he kind of laughed and said, "I don't think your grandmother would like that too much, besides, you'll find someone you like better, promise." And I did.

I love how River thinks that it's appropriate to marry her brother because in her mind, love just means love, and there aren't any different versions of it. :) kinda makes me both happy and sad.

River said in a soft tone "I didn't see you" to Saffron. How finely written these episodes were. The notion of River being a psychic somehow creeps in and then of course we've seen her kill three men with a gun not even looking at them in "War stories", not to mention the movie. That show was really something special.

"I didn't see you". Sums up that River wasn't just talking about the swiped ration. :D I love all the subtleties.

I love how many times Mal contradicts himself during his little speech.

My favorite line in this episode is from Shepard; "if you take advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell, a level they reserve for child molesters, and people who talk at the theater"

Loved it! :) Joss was right, if you had to delete something that was almost 4 minutes long without corrupting the storyline, this was (unfortunately) the scene to remove. Still, loved how River is giving Simon such a hard time, and I love Mal really telling Saffron off about her supposed meekness. (She was gettin' on my nerves with that too.) Such a great line, too: "There are about 70 earths spinning anout the galaxy and the meek have inherited not a one of 'em."

This is a really good scene. Everything it shows us - River’s innocence and naivety and insecurities, Simon trying to explain to her why they can’t be married, River exposing Saffron and giving us another subtle hint of her psychic abilities, Mal’s response to Saffron taking the food - all that is really good. The bit where Simon calls her crazy does seem slightly out of character, but it doesn’t seem like a complete character break, to be honest. He didn’t really mean it, he was just shocked by what she had said and was trying to think of an excuse to give to Book. I mean, he apologised immediately.

River IS whack job crazy. But she realizes it and and fortunately for us, she uses it to yank the chains of all around her.

Seems like River is just playing with them at by the end.

She's a little touched in the head because of some government experiment, and she has trouble understanding the subtle nuances of human interaction. In her mind, she and her brother love each other, and people who love each other get married, not understanding why it's inappropriate.

Found this accidentally looking for something, ANYTHING, to fill the void left after watching this full series and movie. Now I'm gonna search every deleted scene :) Love it!

Thank you for posting this, I was wondering why the hell River was even in this episode. She has no lines in the final cut, she's just sort of there.

@Fredcheesburger Only if you don't watch the episode. 1: Mal all ready told Yosaffbridge that she could help herself to the kitchen. So, assuming you watched this and you didn't know what was going to happen later in the episode, why wouldn't he just say, "No, it's okay. I all ready told you to grab something if you were hungry." 2: He all ready gave her a speech about killing people who try to kill her, in otherwords, standing up for herself. This is repeating what he already told her.

I always thought that a great many of River's crazy notions was her being pychic and saying things someone else had randomly thought. I think maybe River got the marry idea because the whole 'gift wife to Mal' incident made someone think in terms of marriage and River heard someone think 'Simon's as good as married to his sis.' Simon avoided courting Kaylee in part because he's his sisters keeper, in a way River is his Ball and Chain.

After rewatching the episode, I was wondering this scene wasn't in there. Thought I dreamed it or something.

What’s funny is that if people pay attention to River she actually predicts everything that happens in the show.

Here Shepard Book says "I'm still collating data." In the first episode, when Mal is talking to Patience, she says "Just collating data" when referring to the stolen food bars. Shepard Book worked for the Alliance.

I was like I watches this series dozens of times... how do I not know this scene. Then I noticed the description saying deleted scene. Though I will say I had the DVD box set, and watches pretty much all the commentary and such. Don't remember this if I ever saw it.

It means "little sister". That's the term of endearment Simon uses for River throughout the series.

Rather than childlike innocence, perhaps she's operating more out of desperation. Book is avowed to celibacy, so with Mal married off by whatever means, then the only two eligible men on the ship, e.g. in her world, are Simon and Jayne. Given her antagonistic relationship with the latter, perhaps she had decided that incest was the better option. As for the "She's a thief!" That could be a manifestation of her psychic abilities, knowing Saffron correctly before the others got any indication.

I think maybe if it was written a little differently, maybe Simon awkwardly trying to explain the difference between familial and romantic love while the preacher is judging him with a slowly raising eyebrow like he does with Mal in this episode, and his out-of-character reaction being better explained as him trying to escape the preachers wrath, it could have been included. There's some good and funny lines here that didn't deserve cutting; Mal's speech especially.

I'm just wondering what Saffron is really thinking when Mal is giving her that lecture. Probably "Fool has no damn idea, I'm about to mess up his day."

Even though River is a bad ass in many ways, I enjoy how innocent she is and how sweet she can be
