We love escaping NYC and camping. Our most visited campground is Rip Van Winkle in Saugerties, NY. This is about 2 hours from NYC. This family campground is no frills, yet offers so many activities it's an absolute favorite for our daughter & her friends. While I love the river and the fact I can bring my dog, she loves riding her bike, catching fish and using the paddle boats. My partner enjoys bringing our daughter's RC Truck and using the track, along with sleeping in a hammock (with mosquito netting, a must!).
While camping here is not cheap, we've found our memories to far exceed what we've paid to spend time here. There are convenient real toilets in multiple areas of the campground, and clean showers located by the camp store. Another highlight is the heated pool which is open from April - September. We just returned from a 3 night stay and I'm already looking at our calendar to see when we can make another visit.
Price Chopper is a grocery store 5 minutes away and we stock up on food there. We buy our firewood on site at the campground.
