Thanks for sharing. I was just down in Missouri as well for viewing the eclipse. I drive a Tesla model Y and I got to see my first couple Rivians and Fords at the Tesla chargers this trip. Didn't encounter any full superchargers on the way down or the way back. The EV chargers were full at the hotel I stayed at but there was another level 2 charger about a block away so I just went over to that one and charged overnight. I have made many cross country trips and only encountered non working chargers a hand full of times but the availability of chargers is getting better than a couple years ago. I own a Tesla to CCS adapter and a handful of adapters for my mobile charger that allow me to charge at camp sites. Wish the Tesla map software would allow me to display non-Tesla chargers so I didn't have to fumble around with Plugshare on my phone sometimes.

We went to view the eclipse in Southern Illinois in the 100% totality zone, and I was planning to test the Tesla magic dock superchargers, but there was over 40 Teslas waiting to charge and a 4 hour wait. Thanks for sharing!

Watching this channel - Learning curve is higher than most realize. A person could run out of electricity, need a tow truck for an EV.

@@thedukeofmanville I like everything about your trip from that window squeegee it's showing how the charging is planned on your screen and those level 2 Chargers. It is important for non Eevee owners to see this so they could see how easy it is to go on a road trip. I also think it is very important to show a non-Tesla charging road trip.

Just got back from my fourth road trip in our Bolt EUV. ~1500 miles from Central Ohio to Springfield, IL, St Louis, and Evansville, IN (for the eclipse). Electrify America was annoying each time but was able to get a charge at least. Otherwise, pretty smooth operation

It's easy as long as you have plenty of time to spare while waiting to charge. I did a Florida to NY trip with my brother in his Model 3 Long Range and it added a ton of time onto the trip compared to my drive down there in my Audi. Waiting to charge got frustrating after a while, but I guess you can always take a nap to kill the time. We averaged 40 minutes per stop to charge during the trip.

I don't usually care how much time it takes me to get from A to B... for me, the irritating part is the Interstate driving itself. Sooooooo long, soooooo boring. I'd rather have stops to break up my trip anyway (and with kids, you get them whether you want it or not).

Curious why you pulled up to the 150KW EA vs the 350KW? Love your videos, let the haters hate.
@thedukeofmanville
@thedukeofmanville 4 ай бұрын
The EA app was showing the 350 kwh was down, and also, my state of charge was around 50% so it would not have charged over 150 kwh anyway. In other words, I was using proper charging etiquette by leaving the 350 for someone that actually needed it. Thanks for commenting!

The best thing about Tesla is the Supercharging Network, just drive in and plug in. There is no looking for an app matching your cellphone or other devices. I can’t remember in six years of ownership encountering a charger that was down. Good luck on your trip.

I was going to a Tesla Supercharger to test the magic dock since they bumped up the amperage to 500, but when I arrived there was over 40 Teslas waiting to charge (4 hour wait). Needless to say, I didn't charge, and I had more charging options if needed. I have never had to wait to charge at EA or EVgo, but two out of the three TSC I have visited have been full with a line. I will be posting that video s00n. Thanks for commenting!

For roadtrips over 3-4 hours, I prefer a single longer (30-40 minute) stop instead of 2-3 shorter ones. I can stop, get food, walk around, use the restroom, catch up with things on the phone, and then get going. It breaks up the drive and it takes the same amount of time door-to-door.

I agree. I like to make my charging stops productive, so I normally charge for longer to avoid short stops. Thanks for sharing!

Rivian on the Tesla network is the game changer for Rivian. Long 1,000+ mi Road-trips in Tesla have been very seamless / relaxing. I would have never ever ever bought a Rivian if it didn’t have access to the Tesla network. I’m still waiting on my A2Z adapter to arrive so, my limited experience so far with the CCS fast charging options is that they’re terrible. I can see why people would be hesitant to go EV if not for Tesla.

Holmes, you have way more patience than me. I never use ChargePoint, EA, EVgo or Blink. Fortunately, there are plenty of RANs from Seattle to San Diego into Arizona and up to Colorado. RANs operate just like Tesla SCs. Just plug in and charge....no CC, no phones, no Apps and I have never encountered a non-working SC (for the Y) or RAN and have never waited at either. Like yourself I'm waiting on my A2Z NACS adapter for trips to Montanna, Wyoming in the R1T. Ford EV drivers are just beginning to get theirs now so it may be months before Rivian ships ours. BTW, it appears there are no RANs in Missouri. What's up with that? Better call your man RJ.

The chargers were next to the hotel we were staying at, and it was $0.07 per kwh. The vehicle was going to be parked anyway, so it saved time. I don't have an issue using apps since public charging for me is very rare, and 99% of my charging is done at home. Thanks for contributing!

Recently made the round-trip from Pennsylvania to Vero Beach and back along the I95 corridor. I drove a BMW X7 and my cousin drove his Model X long range. Your research about gas and charging station equivalent is flawed in real world testing. I only required 2 stops along the 1100 mile journey while my cousin required 5 charging stops averaging 25 minutes each stop. He only topped off at 80% charge each time and arrived about 3 hours after me, and it was closer to 4 hours behind on the return trip since I rode to pretty much empty. There are YT videos from others doing the road trip comparison and it is never even close to the same amount of time spent charging and refueling.

If you were able to drive that far with only two stops tells me you were traveling alone without kids, and you have a powerful bladder. I can go about 4 1/2 to 5 hours maximum or 275 miles before I have to take a bathroom stop, or get something to. I'm also basing this on data and research and not personal situations that vary widely. Thanks for sharing.

@thedukeofmanville I spent years driving for a parts supplier, and you drive to make time. Had my wife 2 kids and dog. We started out at 8pm to avoid traffic and went 7 hours between stops. We weren't sight seeing for this road trip, so no hotel stops and we had cooler in the trunk for food and meals. Not sure if you are aware but most family road trips are done like this. If you keep stopping the "Are we there yet" chants get unbearable.

@@Lena_MVA I have owned gas cars for almost 40 years, and over 98% of the road trips I have been on have been in gas cars. I have experience with both, and my wife and kids prefer road tripping in the Rivian R1T over or Mazda CX-9 and its not even close. Road tripping in the Rivan is an experience while road tripping in the Mazda is a chore. Also, If my job required long drives (300 miles +) based on time I would go with a plug-in hybrid. If I had to tow long distances I would go with a diesel. However, these or outliers since 75%of Americans commute is 16 miles each way, and less than 20% take a road trip more than 500 miles. Most will opt to fly instead Furthermore, if you can charge at home that's about 13 hours on average saved from route diversions to fuel up your vehicle. That is less that the additional time it took your buddy to charge on that road trip. Of course this advantage will diminish the more the EV has to rely on public chargers, but again, that represents a minority of drivers.

Imagine being at that mall and that charger fails and you really needed that charge?? These are really nice for around town trips, but I still don't understand why you want to do this on a road trip?

So with a full tank of gas in my Jeep, I could have easily made it to your destination without ever stopping for gas at all. Your road trip wasn't very far at all. But still, a 20-minute stop to charge is definitely not too bad.
@thedukeofmanville
@thedukeofmanville 4 ай бұрын
I understand what you mean, however, although I did not have to stop to charge up on the way home I still stopped to use the bathroom and get something to eat. I can go about 4 hours before I have to stop for a bathroom break, and I use these breaks to charge as well. So, I'm killing two birds with one stone. In other words, my gas car can go 6 hours before needing gas, but my bladder can only go 4 hours.😂 Thanks for commenting!
