Philippine national hero Dr Jose Rizal stayed at Calle Manuel Fernandez y Gonzalez 8, 3º-4 (formerly C/. de la Visitación) from May 1883 to 17 June 1883 apparently before he left for Paris for a vacation. Located in the old part of Madrid, close to the Plaza Sta. Ana where a statue of the Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca stands, and right behind the Teatro Español.
Apparently he shared this house at no.8 with friends Eduardo de Lete and Ceferino de Leon. It is a beautiful four story building, painted yellow (not sure what colour it was in the 1880s.)
A few doors acrross the narrow street at no. 7 is a beautiful bar/restaurant called Viva Madrid with murals and yellow glazed tiles where Rizal used to take light meals with wine. According to the barman, it was established in 1856 with an open bar, and still has original features from then. I took the opportunity to have a glass of red wine and some potato crisps, taking a video of the rather dark ceiling decorated with carved figures and the colourfully tiled walls, and wondering about the life of Rizal and Filipinos in Madrid around that time.
Outside the doorway is a plaque/marker translated by Google as saying, “In this place, the Filipino national hero Dr. Rizal met with his compatriots to elaborate their joint activity in favor of libertarian reforms for the Philippines.”
Although he did not stay at no. 8 for very long, Rizal did stay around the vicinity (old Central Madrid) for a while.
