Am new to RJM products. Just went thru the three deep dive vids on this product. Had seen a few things about GigRig G2 and Boss ES-8. This video was insanely enlightening, in terms of what kind of control RJM supports, and I dare say, what players are going to need once one commits to pedal switching. I was particularly blown away with the ability to control the devices via midi, as that is precisely what I am looking for: a way to control/get access to the many engines and options within a single pedal, across multiple presets. Saves board space; provides a huge variety of tones/effects. I don't know if the G2 and ES-8 have any midi limitations, but I sure now know what the Mastermind 10 supports...which is, well, everything you can image, it seems. Great work James, best video I've seen on these topics.

@@geo5772 funny because when I ordered the RJM I was worried about that as well. But it’s great. I even compared it to another 1Mohm buffer and the RJM was transparent whereas the other added a little sheen (not in a bad way, but it wasn’t transparent). @JamesAGuitar

Either way works but yea some people do that. That way you can have the external buttons dedicated to bank/song up/down leaving more room on the PBC for other stuff. But of course it's not necessary because you can dedicate two buttons on the PBC for that as well. The default presets layout has that. Just depends on whether you feel like you need a couple more free buttons (and have room on your board).

Hi Brian. Yea it's noting more than an easily accessible point to plug in all my cables. Much easier than plugging into the PBC directly since I have a row of pedals behind the PBC making it harder to reach and see. No buffers or anything, just passes the signal through like a patch bay (although the input is grounded to the case).

Hi James, can you explain why the box with the isolation transformer before the volume pedal? Regards, Pierre
@JamesAGuitar
@JamesAGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Pierre. It's to prevent a ground loop when I'm using the 4-cable method which is probably specific to my setup. My amps don't have effects loops, rather I use the Fryette Power Station's loop for the wet effects. So with the Power Station connected to the amp, and the board connected to both, I get a ground loop. Probably wouldn't be a problem if I was just using an amp with a built in loop. That's also why I use output B on the PBC since output B has an isolation transformer that can be switched in. So my iso transformer covers the Send of the efx loop and output B's iso transformer covers the Return.

Hey there James, great video. Have you compared the PBC to the GigRig G2, and if so, your thoughts please?
@JamesAGuitar
@JamesAGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Θανος! I haven't physically tried a G2 but I did look at it. Although it looked like a great unit as well, I was drawn to the PBC over that and others because on the PBC I love: the screen; it's very complete MIDI implementation (much more than just mapping presets to patches); the customizable buttons and button layouts; and, the editor.
@user-cq8mp3gi4z
@user-cq8mp3gi4z 5 жыл бұрын
Cool, thanks for that. What about tonally speaking, or any noise issues or certain limitations that you would have liked corrected? One thing i like about the G2 is that it has a lot of buttons on tap but my biggest gripe about the G2, is that you cannot use the unit to split up the pedals in front of the amp and the pedals in the efx loop. While it gives you options to separate the "in front of the amp pedals" and those in the efx loop, the cables still run like a 4 cable method, and i am not a big fan of that. The PCB allows you place your cables separately and avoid the whole 4cb process. I believe the G2 is aimed at pedal users that love a million pedals in front of their amp and just a reverb and delay or chorus in the loop. I like using my amps distortion and overdrive and the pedals for just adding effects or some extra drive, i dont rely on OD pedals only for my sound. And the midi capabilities on the G2 is miserable. But it does have a nice tone when running everything straight , i just wished it had the separate cables option ofr the fx loop, it would have been complete. That and better midi capabilities of course.
@JamesAGuitar
@JamesAGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
@@user-cq8mp3gi4z Yea I agree on the MIDI thing:) ... No issues with noise and tonally it's completely transparent. The buffers are perfect; exact sound and feel as going into the amp straight (not so when I tried a Mesa buffer instead which added some sheen). ... I'm using the 4-cable method as well and honestly I don't see how you could use the efx loop without it if you have them in PBC loops. Are you talking about using something like an Effects Gizmo or having them outside the PBC controlled via MIDI? ... The only downside compared to the G2 and Boss is you can't reorder the loops programmatically. It's for tonal reasons, though, as he explains in this thread: www.rjmmusic.com/forum/index.php?threads/reordering-loops.2074/
@user-cq8mp3gi4z
@user-cq8mp3gi4z 5 жыл бұрын
@@JamesAGuitar Yes, i had read that awhile back. What i meant was Gtr into Input of PCB, Out 1-4 into front of Amp's Input, In 5-6 into Effects Send and Output A Left into Effects Return of amp. This way there is no 4 CB and everything is separated. Also, how do you like your Mobius effects vs pedals? I just got mine and I already find that the Boss Chorus pedals for example sound better than what Mobius tries to emulate.
@JamesAGuitar
@JamesAGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
@@user-cq8mp3gi4z Yea I woudn't be surprised if individual pedals might sound better, just feel that the Mobius crosses that threshold of being good enough -- which sounds like a bad thing but it isn't necessarily. I like the chorus, phaser, trem and flange on the Mobius. Nice to have all those options in a small footprint.

can you be more explicit how did you wire each pedal and how did you build a junction box
@JamesAGuitar
@JamesAGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, sorry for the delayed reply. All the pedals are wired into loops on the PBC except for the tuner and volume pedal (and anything I put in the "guest" slot). So PBC loop1 "send" to input of pedal, and output of pedal back to PBC loop1 "return". Repeat for all the other loops. Everything is mono on my board. The junction box is an aluminum case (plastic won't act as a shield from noise). It's very important to ground the case to one of the inputs, if not then the case acts as an antenna and you'll get noise. All the jacks are plastic except for the input. The metal jack on the input gives me the ground. Some people run a ground wire to the case but this easier for me. I drilled the holes myself (PITA with a hand drill, be careful) and also did something cool wiring. Here's a forum post I started that has a picture of the internals and explains how it works: www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/junction-box-grounding-question-with-internals-pic.1689370/. Fun project and pretty easy to do.

Hey man, thanks! Not sure if follow completely but you don't need to have the Strymon in a loop -- you can just send a MIDI message to activate/bypass the pedal. If you have it in a loop you have the button select a preset on the Strymon and simultaneously activate the loop (my videos I think show that in a direct access way). So there's a couple ways to do it.

Any new button pages you create won't be accessible on the pedal unless you go to the Global tab and increase the value in the Max Button Page dropdown. So if you add one new button page, increase that by one. If you add another, increase it again. This is designed so that if you create button(s) to scroll through your button pages it won't have to scroll through all 16 but rather just the range you define here. Which leads me to... 3) ...navigation on the pedal. You WILL need to dedicate one or more buttons on the pedal to navigate to your various pages. Either you can do what I did and have dedicated buttons for each page, or you can create a scroll up button (and maybe a scroll down as well). The latter method uses less buttons but at the expense of more tapping. Hope this helps, Phil!
