FOX Sports’ RJ Young takes us through Oklahoma football’s journey from Bob Stoops, to Lincoln Riley, to Brent Venables. RJ explains what it means to be a Sooner, and why the football program is so connected with the people in the state it represents. RJ believes that when Oklahoma hired Brent Venables to replace Lincoln Riley, it reconnected them with type of program Bob Stoops built.

Excellent video RJ. I went to my first Nebraska game in 1969 at the age of 9. I learned a deep respect and admiration for OU Football. They and Nebraska were two sides of the same coin if you will. I cheer for OU every game except for when they play my beloved Huskers. Kudos to you RJ! You’re my kind of guy.

Loved the video. Great! I am an Arkansas fan but I have always wanted Arkansas to be like Oklahoma! Same colors, long shared border, states that have no NFL team and love their college team. Oklahoma just has more population and money and SEC level players than Arkansas and can recruit Texas like nobody else. Loved those Barry Switzer teams. He's from my neighboring county here in Arkansas. Now would ya'll just beat Alabama? They need to be taken down a notch. Looking for Brent to restore Sooner D!

In Stoops introductory press conference he said that they will embrace the high expectations from the fans. He said that Oklahoma deserves to have high expectations. That mentality showcases what he was all about. He didn’t shy away from greatness. He embraced big games and held the standards high. The 2000 National title team had starters playing on each special team unit.

I have been holding back this for the right podcast. You said everything just about that I wanted to say, but at 8 paragraphs I had to shorten it. I plan to post this to a few SEC podcasts. They haven't a clue who Oklahoma is. Thank you for this. So here it is. The SEC only needs this season to understand Oklahoma football. They keep saying OU will see about the SEC because of the grind. What a crock! If you believe this, you haven't watched enough Oklahoma football, I can tell you that. I don't care what Vegas says, and I don't think the SEC bluebloods believe it either. They know what Oklahoma football is about. Oklahoma doesn't play over confident or weak. They are use to getting everybody's best and wouldn't want it any other way. So they have to play every game like the season depends on it, because it does. Oklahoma has never been satisfied with a 10-2 season. It's not who we are. Our team still won't be satisfied with a record like that just because we are in the SEC. The mindset at Oklahoman really is going for Nattys, every year. That's our fanbase, that's the expectation and the standard. If mediocrity is good enough, then why even play or go to a game? Coach V knows, Coach Stoops knows and anybody that wants to come coach here knows. I will also say we usually give our coaches a realistic time to succeed as well before they get the axe. Our AD is smart, fair and one of the best ever. It's not a stepping stone program to get your feet wet and move on. It is a blue blood program with the records to prove it and our coaches rarely ever leave for other schools. Riley was the exception, not the rule. It worked out for the better that he moved on. I won't say he did us right on the way he went about exiting, but I'm not bitter about it like some fans, because I, like a lot of other Sooner fans really love Coach V. Riley knows what he did was wrong, and even stated he had some regrets. Riley leaving was because he didn't have the D. He couldn't recruit the D and that in itself would soon get him in the hot seat at Oklahoma. He knew it. After losing to Georgia in the playoffs, it showed that weakness. Some of it was competing in the SEC, but really it was about him not able to recruit a defense to mirror the success of his offense. Going to the SEC meant competing against teams that had great D's. Oklahoma wouldn't be a good fit for the SEC if Riley was still around. He couldn't do it, so he had to leave before he got canned. He's smart as an OC, smart on making moves while he has a window open, but he was only average for special teams, and very poor at choosing defensive coordinators. Stoops had to leave the keys to someone as he was looking to retire. He saw Riley as a young, smart, up and coming coach and I believe Stoops figured Riley had all the the support and advice from the program to help him make good decisions, but it wasn't something he was good at. I agree with Finebaum, I don't think Riley will be the USC coach come next season. Nothing against Riley, but I think he needs to concentrate his efforts on the defensive side for a while to grow before he will have a chance to become a good head coach. Sooners are definitely high on Coach V. He gave our identity back to us. He knew what it was because he already lived it. He was the only guy we could put in at that time that would get our identity back right away. During the Riley years we got that taken away We got soft on D. It was very embarrassing for us. The young fans loved hanging a lot of points on our opponents. It was fun, but older fans knew better. It takes offense, defense and special teams. That high scoring offense worked in the Big XII, but the SEC, BIG10, ACC and most of the PAC 12 played all sides. That's the game. Being great at out scoring your opponent in hopes you're defense holds long enough to win is not a strategy, It's flawed thinking. Oklahoma have a core belief that defense wins championships. It starts by not allowing your opponent any points. Why? Most would think the most important thing would be getting on the scoreboard and then spending most of your time and energy on perfecting it. Doing only offense leaves the leftovers of your programs time and energy for defense and special teams. The offense always gets celebrated, because they do most of the scoring. That's where all the accolades usually go. Last year many saw how Oklahoma fans got fanatical when our D got that goal line stand against its bitter rival, Texas. That was beautiful. That's when Oklahoma got its identity back. Stop a team and it gets in their head. That was Sooner football and it was sweet. The accolades for a change went to our incredible D and our great coach. The D worked their butts off and it was satisfying to watch and make the point to the college football world, we're back! Oklahoma will always have scoring offenses throughout its season, but it's not every game, maybe not in several seasons you get to see a four down goal line stand. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw one. Oklahoma will play physical, smart, fast, balanced and well coached football. We've got all areas covered except we have some uncertainty about our O-Line. They will have to hit the gaps, protect our young inexperienced 5-Star QB like the season depends on it and allow us to execute the run. They are the key this year and we have the best O-Line coach in college football. If he can't do it, no one can. We have tremendous trust in Coach B, but you got to have the talented big X's too. Time will tell. Getting our O-Line ready in time for everybody else on the offense to buy in is one of two things we Sooner fans are really concerned about. The other may be to ensure we have a good field goal kicker. If we lose our QB, it will likely be the fault of our O-Line or because of his inexperience he gets injured. After all, the game is still very fast for our QB. One bowl game isn't enough to slow things down yet. The Tennessee game will be a huge test for us. If we lose to Tennessee then it could be a long season. We will grow and get better. But I don't know if we can play well enough to get in the top 5 of the SEC if we don't have our O-Line ready. I'll hold my predictions until after Tennessee.

Posters, placards and t-shirts showing Bud, Barry, Bob, Brent must be put out by people who don’t really know Sooner History, Ever heard of “Owen Field”? Its the playing field inside the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The man who supervised the construction of said stadium in the 1920’s was Benny Owen, OU’s first great coach whose first name starts with a B. He is Oklahoma’s first 100+ game winning coach, so beloved, we named the field after him. Come on Sooner faithful, don’t lose our history,

Oklahoma had a chance to go undefeated last year, beat Texas twice, win a game in the College Football Playoffs, and leave everything on the field in the National Championship Game. In retrospect Oklahoma could have beat Michigan. However, they did not believe all things are possible and faded away after beating the most talented team on their schedule. Furthermore, it is clear no one is going to run roughshod over Oklahoma. The things Brent Venable needs to do to continue the tradition of winning Conference and National Championships; 1) prepare mentally and physically for the gauntlet that will be the SEC, 2) eliminate penalties and mistakes, and 3) develope a toughness and physicality that will not be denied. In my opinion, Tennessee, Texas, Alabama, and LSU are winnable but tough games. Just do not allow for another Kansas and Oklahoma State equivalent losses, in the SEC. BOOMER SOONER 4 LIFE
