Amazing. By that time, Olympic was seen as a relic of a bygone era. Olympic, Mauretania, Aquitania, and the Ballin trio (minus the Bismarck, later Majestic) were the only prewar mega liners still sailing, and by the 30s, they were looking worn and outdated. The public wanted even more room and more modern luxuries. It's interesting then that at the time of her retirement, when they examined the Olympic before taking her to the scrapyard at Jarrow, they found that structurally, she was still in very good shape for her age, despite everything that had happened to her over the course of her colorful career.

Such a fascinating piece of film. Not just for the content, but because its an very early non movie sound film.

What an amazing job they must have done repairing the damage from the Hawke collision. It looks like nothing ever crashed into that ship at all!

I keep hearing people claim that Olympic upon launch and during the maiden voyage had 16 portside portholes, which from what I have seen is clearly rubbish. It appears Olympic had the additional two added sometime during Titanic's fitting out stage when Olympic was being repaired, why they thought of adding two portholes for when they were desperate to get her back to sea worthy condition following the Hawke collision I've no idea, seems abit suspect to me, but photos taken from Victoria Park across from the River Lagan in Belfast (well if you can find a very hi res version of this photo not the crappy low res one I've found) show Olympic with 16 portside portholes, yet there are photos I've seen which I initially thought were taken after Titanic sank - during Olympic's lifeboat inspection following the disaster, which show only 14 portholes.

Both were originally launched with 14 portholes on Port side of forecastle Deck. After a few voyages, probably due to feedbacks from Olympic, Titanic got added 2 additional portholes and a skylight and a cowl vent on the forecast deck. This helped add more lighting and ventilation to crew galley and washroom on C Deck under the forecastle Deck.. The same modification was later given to Olympic in March, 1912. Photograph no. H1706 in National museums of Northern Ireland website gives a clear view of those portholes. It was taken by Robert Welch when Olympic came for replacing the thrown propeller blade and the Last time she was in the docks with Titanic. So, in short, by March 1912 both ships had 16 portholes where Titanic was the first one to get it.

@@gokulgopan4397 Thanks for that, yes you're correct Olympic was given the extra portholes in March 1912 or just before, but the photo clearly showing this seems to very hard find online on a general search and this is why so many so many seem to think the extra 2 were added during the 1913 refit or sometime after the disaster. Do you know where that photo can be found because I can't find on the NMNI website. I do remember coming across quite a few rarely seen photos of Olympic on that site awhile back but they seem to have disappeared. There are lots of photos of both ships I've come across on a facebook group, these are rarely seen photos.

Keep in mind that portholes are added or removed on a whim sometimes. Look at any ship up close today and you will be able to see plugged portholes. It is a relatively quick and simple modification in a yard with the tools and equipment.

The whole size of the propeller shaft... the technique of removal... and then the look above towards capstan... just imagine the Titanic-s stern section sitting deep in the mood with the propeller shafts bent upward... dozens of tons bent like that...

I know they were replacing Olympic,s propeller. But why did they pull the propeller shaft out was it bent or out of round from the collision?

Forgive me for asking this, but how is it possible that we have picture and sound and the sound is remarkable considering the date. When was this filmed? I was assuming around 1912 but I'm not sure that's possible. Yes we had motion picture in those days and yes we had recordings made on Edison cylinders and flat records on 78 RPM but beyond that I'm not certain

Not a hi viz jacket or hardhat in sight, just hard working men wearing flat caps, how did we cope without them lol. This is not 4K or even 1080p, and the video has been cropped as noted by the watermark. Wish this could be seen without the watermark, same with that annoying British Pathe logo on the Titanic footage.
