The Royal New Zealand Air Force makes one of its last pubic displays of the A4 Skyhawk at the Classic Fighters 2001 airshow, just prior to the disbanding of the Air Force's fighter strike wing.

In 1993 i was for three or four days in Malaysia near the Kuantan AB to see Skyhawks, but I was only able to see one of these birds at two traffic patterns. This was'nt so succesfull... 😂 But since a few years we have in Germany some former Israel and now civil Skyhawks for target practice of the german air force at Wittmund AB. I live in Bavaria and Wittmund is sadly at the other end of Germany, but yeah, I was there now two times for watching skyhawks and maybe this September or next year in spring I will go there again...

True, though I've just been reminded (after reading a history of the French Foreign Legion) that if you disestablish units, then you loose your experienced cadres for when you next need to re-establish the unit, usually making the reconstituted formation much less effective than it would have otherwise been.

They have big bro Australia. I don't see in what scenario would Australia just stand by if a hostile country somehow got it in their head to threatened New Zealand. Not that there's anything in NZ worth embarking on such a venture anyway. Did NZ have territorial dispute with anyone worth mentioning? With the People's Republic of Antarctica maybe?

I think the South Korean FA-50 would make a decent solution for the RNZAF's needs, but only if it has or is going to have Harpoon integration. It's a decently cheap aircraft, at only $30 million a pop, with good supersonic performance (and rate of climb) for interception and air policing duties. The only other real option would be the Gripen, but might be too expensive from a procurement standpoint but would be higher performance and a more long term solution. I'm sure the RNZAF could afford a minimum of ten FA-50. I also wonder if the RNZAF could jump into the KF-X program which might give a boost to New Zealand's defense industry and extended civilian industrial base. An investment in defense can be an investment in the economy.

Thing is, we had already paid a deposit of tens of millions for brand new F16's which PM Helen Clark cancelled, and then spent 5 times that lease deal on the NH90! We could of got surplus refurbished blackhawks for a fraction of that, and still leased the F16, and with budget surpluses over the last ten years bought extra frigates and new C130 J, C17 even. Not poor by any means,Treasury is just blind, stupid to the dangers we face and tight fisted with cash.

We have a very similar problem in Ireland. We once had the Light Strike Squadron consisting of 6 Fouga CM170 Magisters. Now they weren't much but they were better than nothing at all. They were retired in 1999 and never replaced, leaving the Irish Air Corps with no jet combat aircraft to this day. As you mentioned, the FA-50 would be perfect for both Ireland and New Zealand's needs, i.e. air policing, interception etc. Capable of Mach 1.5 and cheap to buy.

Cinnabun NZ should buy Australia FA 18 A/B hornets they are still a very capable aircraft many had upgrades to them while Australia gap wait on F35 A JSF fighter. Australia will have 24 of F18 F super hornet and EA growlers electronic jamming aircraft, as also 100 F35 A JSF stealth fighters serving by 2018 till 2045 Australia older FA18s would make a good replacement of the NZ A4 skyhawk till 2035 it will give NZ time to come up with money for a modern fighter jet, at least the F18 hornets will protect NZ till its end date the F18s still match enemy aircraft and are good dog fighter, add a few upgraded anti ship missiles and AMX9 sidewinder missiles and free fall bombs NZ will have a good aircraft for anther 20 years. Australia is only getting rid of them because the ADF required a later air craft that is 5th generation and larger for upgrade bombs as the older FA18A/B hornet cannot carry as much weapons as the super hornet can or the F35 A JSF, though it is still a capable fighter and would be perfect for NZ

Anchialem Gale problem is, NZ doesn't like military spending, we're very anti-war and any military spending is frowned upon, especially with the growing child poverty in the country, would be a bad time to invest in jets.

Cinnabun it is good NZ anti war after ww1 and ww2, and korea and Vietnam who can blame you, though every country needs to have a active military , even though you try to avoid war sometimes war comes to you even if you don't want it. It is better to be able to defend then be defenceless, there is to many dictators today and to many other allies who can pull us into a war unexpected and unready to make that mistake to be defenceless. I know Australia will fight to save NZ to our last man if we had to, as USA had told Australia take a shear of the burden and arm to defend before asking help, it may suck financially though Australia is arming our military.

Cinnabun Russia Navy made it's way down to our warters there is no such thing as isolated as to be to far, it is 2015 not 1945. The point is, it is better to arm then not to, just think of the consequences just if it does. Who knows if one day Indonesia decided to try to attack Australia and New Zealand ? Australia will have a defensive retaliation though will New Zealand ? What if Indonesian try to invade NZ just to cause a second flank on Australia, it could happen, Australian radars are not protecting NZ as also NZ have no air defence to even put up a defence. Crazy thinking mate, it is better to inspect the uninspected than to not. All I can say is NZ you are crazy to let your guard down, especially when growing concerns with China North Korea and Indonesia, let alone Russia Iran and the jealous nation India. many of these countries I mentioned above are only waiting for us to disarm while they build there's , then watch out allies, and you know what, it will be our fult to trust them and to let our guard down. Our old diggers will be shaking there heads at as, as the fool.

Exactly. It was never about quantity, it was about capability. You can always buy new aircraft, but you cant just pull fighter jocks out of your back pocket. Yes, the A4s were old and drained the budget. But the fact we now have an Air Force with no interception capability is testament to short sighted political philosophies like 'we live in a benign defence environment'. One day the Chinese or whomever the superpower du jour is may want some more 'living space'. Won't be too benign then.

The only way NZ could afford a strike force was by starving the army of equipment and equipping the navy with second hand British frigates. The only time an RNZAF A-4 fired its guns off a training area was in 1976 and the target was a Taiwanese fishing boat.

They should seriously consider bringing at least 5 Skyhawks and 5 MB-339s back into service. Sure, the Skyhawk was built a LONG time ago. But they can be upgraded. Also, the MB-339 can be used as both a Trainer and a Strike Fighter.
