The 2024 Weathertech International Challenge at Road America includes 12 groups of racing vehicles. Group 7 is highlighted by Father-Son combo Brian and James French, driving their pair of 1997 Formula One cars. Brian drives a Bennetton formerly piloted by Gerhard Berger, while James drives a Jordan of Ralf Schumacher's. Both cars now use Judd V10 engines, but still make a simply wonderful howl on Road America's numerous long straights, and are among the many highlights at this great yearly tradition in Wisconsin.

The French family is a great group. A couple years ago my wife and I were there and they were too. The son talked to me for at least an hour and a half, showed us the cars in detail and even invited us to dinner with them. Unfortunately my wife started the foot tapping thing which means its time to do something else. I would like to thank the family for being very friendly and accommodating.

Oh yeah, James is a fabulous guy who is extremely talented but still down to earth! First saw him during the Xfinity race in 2018, been a fan ever since!

I was there on the front straight and the sound was just Music to my ears. Watching them go around turn 3 while seemingly hardly slowing down is just remarkable to watch. Then the unreal acceleration. Team French really knows how to drive.

Brian French used to race his I think 1990 V 12 Ferrari F1 here at RA. V 10s are great but the 12 cylinder was music.

Even better with an X-pipe like Ryan Tuerck's Supra. In fact, I'd say the X-pipe is somewhat make or break for that engine, without it they sound a lot like the common production v10s, just higher revving.

I grew up going to the Historics with my dad. (GT3 Cup car). When I found out I could go across pit lane and watch these F1 cars from the wall on the main straight I lost my shit. Not sure if they’ll still let you do that these days. But ya I was 2-3 feet away from that benneton and a Ferrari going close to 200 mph. I think I got an old vid of it as well but it was before high quality cameras on everyone’s phones lol. I LOVE RA and Elkhart Lake, and especially that event… all the car parades and meeting old drivers. It was a fun party weekend for a high school kid as well lol.

Yup, the Can Am cars were always my favorite… I you haven’t heard (or felt) those things go by you in person there’s no way to describe it lol. Another one of my favorite Historics stories was driving my dads race car in the paddock to get him gas (I was 15 at the time). I got stuck in a traffic jam and had to stop on the way up the big hill. It’s a race car so no working e brake of course, a 15 year old kid in $100k plus race car and what do I see when I look in my mirror??? A damn F-ing (excuse my language) Daytona Cobra… and not a replica, and this guy gave me what felt like 3 inches a space for roll back on that damn hill. Most nervous clutch dump on a hill in my life lol.

I'm not sure if the Judd engines are restricted, but they're revving them all the way out to the limit Judd recommends (~11k), so I assume they're unrestricted. That puts them around the same 750 hp as the original Renault and Peugeot engines these cars had when they competed, just at a lower RPM. One of the mechanics told me they were topping out around 199 mph this weekend. Amazing watching them from pit exit. Also, not sure if you saw it but there was a 2005 Graham Rahal Lola B02/00 Champ Car that still had the original Cosworth XFE engine. Was hitting about the same top speed as the F1 cars.

Yes, that is about correct. I think the Bennetton makes slightly more because it is a 4.2L. I did see that! I believe it is the 3rd or 4th car in line in this train. Thank you for the information! (:
@brieee28
@brieee28 Ай бұрын
@@justinkrizenesky According to Judd's website, the 4 and 4.2 liter versions of the engine make the same power and have the same rev limit. AIUI (and this is just my guess) it's probably just a little wider powerband and/or more torque, or maybe a little more reliability for the same performance.
