The level of stupidity expressed in some of the comments is shocking. To all who said why pick up in reverse, forward is much easier. What? If you pick up cones that are put out for a lane closure moving forward, your releasing traffic behind you into the previously closed lane. It has to be done in reverse so the traffic flows around the work crew and not into it from behind. The system has little to do with being lazy and more to do with protecting work crews from the motoring public who could not care less about safety.

As someone who has done traffic management in the past this would be a great help, most of the job is actually managing traffic, putting out cones and signs takes the last amount of time in the work day however is the most physical and potential to cause many injuries from stress on the body.

Scorpion (it's not necessarily the company name) refers to the attenuator mounted on the rear of the truck. It curls and unfurls like a scorpion's tail; hence the name scorpion.

Freeway lane closures cannot be picked up going forward. You would have frustrated vehicle queuing behind the traffic truck as the closure opens up. Must be done in reverse.

What an engineering discovery! No one came up with idea of installing €1200 slide on a truck that basically has no function. Takes one person to drive one person to load each cone. Are they stupid? Have u not been to construction sites where people laying cones the same way without expensive slide? One person drives whilst other on the back lays cone. This is just as efficient if not more efficient and more precise as person laying cones can adjust where to place cones so driver doesn’t need to keep looking at the side mirror and can focus on road ahead.

So you have to go in reverse to pick up cones. That seems highly ineffective. Why wouldn’t you turn the retrieval system to face forward. Plus in certain circumstances that machine wouldn’t work because it would put you in the traffic as you were putting cones out or picking them up. Needs to have a placemat and retrieval system sitting back to back on both sides.

This is hardly a one purpose machine. Attenuator trucks (like the scorpion here) are used as shadow vehicles inside lane closures, storage/transport for lane closure related or other construction equipment, for cone dispense/retrieval (as this one is), for trailering message boards/arrow boards, etc. Hardly one purpose.
