The Road King Classic is an old school classic style of a motorcycle. In this video, I will show you my Road King Classic (2000) and go for a ride taking about does one change, ruin the classic style.

I thought the same when I did the headlight and passing lamps on my 07 Road King. One time getting caught after dark and you’ll forget about that classic look and be glad you upgraded your lights. I did a bunch of Custom Dynamics lights on the rear as well. I have no trouble with being seen anymore. I’m not sorry I upgraded all the lights as my safety is worth it. I don’t do a ton of night riding anyway. When I do I’m glad I upgraded. Duke needs some 16” apes. In my humble opinion. Ride safe. 👍

I love your updated lighting because, as others have said, it's about safety first. Plus, to other bikers (Harley riders, in particular), it shows that you take good care of your bike. I saw a younger guy tearing ass down a sketchy road yesterday and he was on a 2021 Heritage, weaving in and out of traffic, speeding like a maniac. He had pipes that were loud AF; yet still had the shitty stock lighting. The first thing I did when I got my '21 Street Bob was replace all the lighting. Even had it all prior to taking delivery of the bike. Your RK looks awesome!

I have a 2007 road king classic and I’m on the fence about the leds myself, I bought the bike for it’s classic look. I changed the handlebars to the tall boy bars from Harley, they look similar to the stock bars but sit about 5 inches taller. The bars made the bike so comfortable for me being a taller rider. Nice bike and ride safe!

Number one thing is you have to be safe. Duke still looks like the classic it always has been. Just now you can see it coming! I have the same problem with my 2011 Road King, you can't see it coming. I've been riding with guys in the daytime and gotten far enough ahead of them and they can't see my lights. Someday when I get the money to change my lights out they are getting changed. Hopefully same one that you got on Duke, ride safe bro. Love the video.

Some of the nostalgia is traded for safety which is good in my opinion. For my triumph they make a classic looking headlight with an led in there. Surprised I haven’t seen more of these for the classic Harleys. Great job Bob

The lights don’t make it lose its classic look. The style of the bike makes it classic, just a bare bones enjoy the ride with no distractions bike. I’m running a similar set up. Kawasaki, 2005 Nomad. Going to put 14” apes on to have a more upright riding position, but it still has that classic styling. Keep the good content coming, love the videos.

Nice to see you out on Duke! I think your bike looks fine. It’s a very minor change from the stock look. After your video on the headlights I looked up the prices as I was considering doing the same to my ‘07 Road King. I have decided it’s not worth it to me because I almost never ride at night. Last year I only road after dark one time and that was for about a mile from grabbing a burger and a beer in a small Wisconsin town back to our campsite. As a survivor of a motorcycle meets dear crash about 10 years ago I am very reluctant to ride once the sun starts to set. In my case the deer jumped out of the woods into my path so quickly that there was no time to react. Doubt a better headlight would’ve helped. Ever since I’m parked before dark!

I have the WHIM in my Ultra, and really enjoy listening to XM satellite radio (gotta have my Bluegrass Junction!!) on my iPhone. I get the folks that say “you shouldn’t need a radio!!!” But it works for me. As far as the LED headlights, that is a safety issue, and let the dim headlight go quietly into the night…

I keep going back and forth on this. Found your videos on the upgraded lights a few weeks ago. Thinking about doing the same to my 2002 Road King Classic. Bought it last year. 10k on the odometer. Chrome everything, which I love until detail days. Stage 4. Beach bars. SuperTrapp exhaust. I'm just looking at the price. $974 for the setup you have shown. It would be easy enough to switch back to stock. At this point, the lights would be a finishing touch of a Resto-Mod look. I get the conflict. Been going back and forth on pulling the trigger ever since seeing the video.

My 21 Revival came halogen lights for nostalgic reasons,my very first upgrade was all led lights.No regrets.I want to be seen and see good after dark.Great decision in my opinion.

Your bike is cool. You didn’t ruin it at all. I still have my 93 Honda 1100 Shadow I bought new in 92. I have about 53,000 miles on it completely stock. I only put 3-400 miles on it a year now. The older I get the more I like the comfort of the bagger!!

Run whatever lights you prefer, for my '97 RK I'll stick with the standard lighting. The only problem I have seeing well at night is when approaching vehicles have these brighter lights.

Yes you did. Nothing wrong with the factory lights. If you think you can't see well enough at night slow down. Still a beautiful bike almost a twin to mine except for the fishtails which carry the classic look even farther. Logged thousands at night and never an issue as stated if I feel the need I just drop my speed a touch I live in a high wildlife zone so caution is always advised.

Nice topic and good question for the classic riders like me who are doubting to go led. Although I first hesitated going led because of less classic looks, I read many very good arguments for going led: Safety before looks!! Personally I like the led-headlamp better than the passinglamps. End of the line it’s always more comfortable being home in one piece riding a led-classic than in hospital thinking “damn that truck hit me cause the bike was invisible, but glad it is (was) an original”.

It’s hard finding good condition older bikes that aren’t all chopped up. I like the new lights. They add to the safety in bright daylight as well as those evening rides. Those old lights in the day time dont shine great. Yes I would do the same as you if i owned Duke. I would like to upgrade my 2007 BMW R1200R to LED.

I agree it is whatever the owner wants the bike to look like. I have not seen you do any night riding videos on Duke but if you do the added light will be nice for sure. Maybe do a few night videos so we can see the new lights and show a clip of a night video with the old lights so we can compare. But hey it's Custom Dynamics and how can you go wrong with the BEST LED light company in the World? Nice thoughts thanks for sharing. Ride Safe

Safety is priority #1. Nighttime or daytime you can be seen better and that’s more important. Duke looks just fine. It’s a great piece of mind.

Bout the only reason I haven't switched my '05 Heritage to LEDs is because I don't ride it at night. But, now that a couple bulbs need replaced, I probly will switch them out . . . safety is always a convenient excuse!

Just a word to the wise. Your King is a first gen Twin Cam and the timing chain tensioners need to be changed out so your engine doesn't commit suicide. That is if that hasn't been done as of yet. The mileage on your bike is about the time the problems manifest, so checking them to see if they are beginning to fail is a good idea. Good luck!

Appreciate that advise and fortunately I got that coaching from someone right after I bought it. Since previous owner was not sure, I had them checked and they are good. Probably do again at 30k and get them out of there. Ride safe and thanks!

I added LED lights to my 1999 Road King & don't regret it one bit...I've kept her largely original, but I have upgraded her in a few areas...I'd rather be able to see at night than worry about preserving an underperforming peice of OEM history...it's actually hard to tell how old she actually is now...I'll still add a few more things, but not much...nothing wrong with a mildly customized classic...you gotta add your stamp to it...just hang on to the original parts & you can always put them back on if you want it fully original again...

My buddy was busting my chops when I updated the headlights on my 2000 Road King. I told him I would rather see when driving at night and be seen while driving in the day than worry about the look all the way down to the lights in the housing.

Good topic. IMHO, I would rather be seen by other traffic and see other stuff, than to use antiquated lighting with a higher risk of people not seeing you. It's like this, would you rather use a flashlight for your headlight or a LED spotlight? The pure classic look doesn't do you any good while your in the hospital recuperating because you couldn't see hazards in your path or others couldn't see you. I think you did the right thing. If other people don't like it, let them eat cornbread.

As long as you like it. I wouldn't I have a 87 Electra Glide with all the stock lights love it. Not long ago I bought a 97 Super Glide and it has a LED headlight I'm not liken it.

And I thought you were going to do something else! I'd prefer the safety aspect of new lights versus aesthetics. If you started chopping it up, then you'd be in trouble losing that classic styling.

You didn't ruin it 'cause you can put the incandescent lights back in at any time. Me personally I will keep my incandescent lights. I hardly ride at night though. I got rid of the white walls the first tire change. Your bike is OK just keep the incandescent lights in a box for future consideration.👍🏼

Naaa, you didn't take the classic out of it. I did Sunpie lights like you for night riding also. Mine is an 07 RK Classic black cherry over pewter pearl. Untouched except for the lights. IMHO, no bars, that's where the style of the Classic starts going downhill. Later Bo,. T A

I have converted to LED bulbs on a lot of my bikes. I am not personally a big fan of the new style LED lights like that. But I wouldn't say it's better or worse. Just merely a personal style choice. Overall the bike still looks good.

No you didn’t ruin it. Just because someone likes to spout negativity is no reason to doubt yourself. You’re the one riding at night on YOUR bike. You need to be safe out there and you have the common sense to protect yourself and Duke. If someone wants to take the chance of hitting something because they don’t see it , it’s their life. My opinion for what ever it's worth is, Change the lights back! Duke was perfect the way he was! I have a stick low mileage 2003 💯 year anniversary Road King and I wouldn't dream of changing anything about it! She does have whitewalls thought!

The "classic" look is awesome but those stock lights are dangerous IMHO I have an 03 Road King Classic Anniversary I picked it up in December first thing I did was thank my lucky stars I HAVE A HARLEY ( its my 1st HD) then I changed out stock lights to Custom Dynamics pro beams from front to rear headlight and passing lamps that bill was a small fortune for a DV on a fixed income but I got them in and I don't think it changes the look much. IMHO it would make it hard to tell that one from a new one not my bike because the paint and badges you can spot a mile away lol

No question, LED lights are better for visibility and safety.... But there is also no question they take away from Duke's "classic" looks. If it were mine, I would have just done an LED bulb only conversion, with none of that DRL ring business.. Those rings make the modern lens look even more out of place on Duke.

Yes , you ruined it. I never change my front light is because I don’t want people break checking me at night because you think your lights are too bright because the motorcycle light is right in the middle of the windshield in the back right in their rearview mirror and a lot of people nowadays don’t like that it’s ok when email coming out you can be seen better . But Behind you it’s just an irritating factor so that’s the reason I won’t put them on my bike . But to each his own as long as you’re happy be careful be safe. 😎👍

You can’t trust spell check to come out with the word you said I don’t like them cause they are too bright at night in the back mirrors of the cars you are following and might cause them to brake you just because your making them mad. but they do at least make people see you better coming at them day or night. . Just be safe riding at with them . Later .. 😎👍

You did not ruin the bike. Safety is always a concern even on an older machine. Don’t forget LEDs are more noticeable to the cagers in the day. Besides lights are easy enough to change you can go back anytime in less than an hour.

No you did not ruin anything. You need to be able to be seen and see at night especially if you ride at night. There may come a time when all we can get is LED's.
