Created in 1945, this short U.S. Navy film "Road To Home" features comedian Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. This picture represented an attempt by the Navy to convince sailors not to desert in the wake of V-J Day, but to wait for honorable discharges and the many benefits waiting in civilian life including the opportunity to attend college. The film is a noteworthy sibling of the "Road to Home" series of seven feature films starring Crosby, Hope, and Dorothy Lamour. These feature comedies are also often referred to as the "Road" pictures or the "Road" series. The movies were a combination of adventure, comedy, romance, and music. Some of the sequences in this short are comic sketches from the Road Show series of movies.

These heroes not only saved the world, they came home and built the USA into the most wealthy productive place on Earth. For a while at least...

I had read that in ETO it was an entire year for many troops to come back to the U.S. Bob and Bing were national treasures.

Grew up on these! You may think I'm ancient by that comment, but really just my parents were - and they hated everything on TV - and boy am I glad they did!

I never thought about it but I guess the risk AWOL and desertion could have been a big problem in the closing days WWII

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZfaq users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films!
