Road to Lisbon Episode 5: bikepacking over the Picos de Europa during a snow storm

After crossing the Alps and the Pyrenees, the next big challenge on my bikepacking Journey from Munich to Lisbon is to get over the Cantabrian Mountains and the Picos de Europa. The weather forcast predicts a 10 days polar storm, but I still wanna give it a try. Riding in freezing temperatures, beeing constantly soaking wet and getting stuck in the snow will be only a few of the tasks that I will have to overcome. But I like to think, that this is also part of the game when you are doing outdoor sports and therefore I accept the challenge.

What an amazing adventure. I didn't know that the Pyrenees are so beautiful. Every year I followed the Tour de France on TV and I'm exciting about the scenic there. If I where a little bit younger I would do a trip like this. You have my deep respect . A couple of years ago we made a cartrip arround Madrid. 5 Cities of welrculture heritage in 7 days. Spain ist so beautiful. Go on and take care.

Wow Peter, amazing video, for sure, but what I am really amazed the most is the strength you’ve kept though all the difficult times! It’s nice to see all the feelings, thoughts and difficulties you had to go through :) Great job for real, you must be proud of yourself!!! I have some questions as well: how do you film your video? (yourself and the panorama) Do you have your stops planned or you stop when you kind of feel like it?

Sehr sehr krass :-) Ich bin begeistert! Man nennt mich ja manchmal "Mental-Monster", in Dir hab ich aber definitiv meinen Meister gefunden. Hab schon viel widrige Umstände erlebt. 1 Woche lang solche Bedingungen am Stück glücklicherweise noch nie :-) Wirklich Hut ab, dass Du das durchgezogen hast. Von genau solchen Geschichten wirst Du Dein Leben lang zehren. Wenn ich mir vorstelle, an Deiner Stelle dort unterwegs gewesen zu sein ... selbst wenn ich es irgendwie "überlebt" hätte, ich hätte definitiv nicht gefilmt. Wirklich der Wahnsinn! Diese Episode lebt vom Abenteuer, Deine Sonnentouren sind natürlich schöner anzuschauen, nichtsdestotrotz fand ich auch diese Episode total fesselnd. Dazu noch die Geschichte mit den spanischen Polizisten, da musste ich lachen, hatte da auch schon das eine oder andere Erlebnis in Spanien, da kamen lustige oder auch ätzende Erinnerungen hoch ;-) Weiter so ... Grüsse vom grossen Fan Deiner Filme und Abenteuer :-)

Absolutely amazing video. I like very much your style and your music choices. And, I’m not sure that somebody else already told you about the fruit: it was a caki and next time try to take the skin off before eating, especially if you will have one more mature than that one in the video. Habe zuerst die Trackaufzeichnungen auf Komoot gesehen und gedacht: Na da hat er sich ja mal ne lahme Strecke durch die Picos ausgesucht, nen Chickenway für Weicheier sozusagen. Mit den Bildern dazu, wird mir so einiges klarer: Da ist ein Wahnsinniger unterwegs. (Finde kein passendes Emoji). Übrigens: für absolut beschissenes Kackwetter mit Dauerregen habe ich eine „Lösung“ gefunden, die zwar total beknackt aussieht, einen aber zumindest trockener hält: der gute alte Regenponcho. Gegen die Kälte hilft das allerdings auch nicht.

Haha.. bzgl route hast du völlig recht.. würde ich normalerweise auf keinen Fall so fahren, sondern wie in den Pyrenäen mein eigenes Ding machen.. aber angesichts der Umstände war das der einzig mögliche Weg 🤷‍♂️danke dir ;)

By coincidence landed at this video. Nice trip! You are the first biker I see, wearing underpants while biking!!! If you don't wear them, they can't get wet! :-) Have fun on the rest of your trip.

haha..so funny that you mention that, because with my friends I was always the only one not wearing underpants, until I changed it midway on this trip out of no reason.. Maybe I should go back to not wearing them :D Thanks a lot for your nice comment ;)

Zu harter sportlicher Ehrgeiz 😅 hatte mich schon bei Start der Tour auf die picos gefreut. Mit etwas Abstand bin ich froh, das gemacht zu haben 😊

total harte Leistung, schöne Videoqualität, ja deine Ausrüstung wäre sehr interessant ABER........du hast der spanischen Polizei möglicherweise dein Leben zu verdanken und die wollten sicher nicht bei dem Wetter an eine Unfallstelle eines WAHNSINNIGEN fahren, ohne starkes Licht, Rücklicht und Warnkleidung unter diesen Wetterbedingungen zu fahren, ist freundlich gesagt, unverantwortlich.

@@peterbaumeister als ehemaliger Bergretter und sehr viel in Österreich bei jeder Witterung unterwegs, bin ich bei unbeleuchteten Zeitgenossen im Schneesturm möglicherweise sehr sensibilisiert, ich habe da einige Tote gesehen und ausschließlich aus vermeidbaren Gründen, ich habe dann den Rettungsdienst verlassen, weil ich nicht mehr bereit war, meinen Arsch für Deppen zu riskieren, aber das war nicht böse gemeint, sondern nur besorgt
