Road to the Arnold - Hafthór Björnsson, Strongman

In the fourth installment of Road to the Arnold, we train with Strongman Hafthór Björnsson of Iceland, the World's Strongest Viking and three time Arnold Strongman Classic competitor. Björnsson - at 6'9" and 400lb. - finished the event in eighth place in 2013 and fifth last year. He's since been cast as "The Mountain" in HBO's "Game of Thrones." But Björnsson's focus is back to competition and earning a spot on the Arnold podium in 2015.

He's participated in the World's Strongest Man several times now and has managed to rank among the top 3 more than once. Being #1 can't be far off.

Thor will have his time...and may end up being the top strongman in history considering how well he has done in such a short time. But I dont see him beating Big Z until Z retires or possibly gets injured. PS Killer tattoo. RIP Jon Paul

I don't see him winning the Arnold as Z is perfect for that heavy of events but I can definitely see him taking the WSM title soon. He has to be the best stone loader in history already?

I do think he will beat big Z next time . Thor is getting better each time and Z is getting older and can only train for his prime self. I mean this year Thor only got behind with half a point so will see next year. Its gonna be very exceting.

Why not? he lost to big Z by 1/2 point last year. If he had used a squat suit, maybe he could have won.

slayer butcher Hapthor should've won 2014 Worlds Strongest Man he placed higher and won more events then then Z Thor got screwed! Don't believe me then watch the 2014 WSM Finals on here again

Tbh, I think the greatest of all time is marius pudzianowski 5 time worlds strongest man, then you can also throw in the other numerous competitions he has one.. For a decade no one could touch him..

He's my hero because I'm 6'8" and 240lbs. I'd love to know his shoulder joint width to be able to compare frames and see how big/strong I can get. Keep up the great work Hafthór! You're an inspiration!

Lin Berg thats totally wrong... im 6,6 and 300 pounds, only on food, no suplements, no drugs... i dont even train as hard as i could (studies and work take a lot of time). dont bullshit people to think you need gear to be strong... i know i have the genetics, but everybody can do it if he gets serious.

I disagree - Thor is nowhere near as "made for this competition" as Big Z is, if we're talking about the Arnold. WSM, yes - he is poised to become absolutely dominant.

Tony Tiso The events in the Arnold Strongman Classic are usually pure static strength, where Big Z is arguably the best. Whereas the WSM also includes some dynamic strenght/athletics events, for example the loading race, fingal´s fingers etc. Thor has very good mobility compared to most other competitors, which makes him very good at those events.

edwincastlebury you do realize that Hafthor has only been doing it for 5 years, he´s 26 and he lost to Zydrunas last year by only half a point, he´s made for this competition alright, he needs to clean up his technique a little bit.

Great trailer! The sheer size of guys like Z, Thor, and Shaw is astounding. It's always exciting to watch the world's biggest, strongest men go head to head in competition. There are very few men in the world with the genetic predisposition and the will and determination to do what they do. What's also great is that guys this size make girls like me (5'10" and 230 lbs) feel like a Tinkerbell Princess.

damn, if he just had some lateral quickness in his feet and arms, would be just a dominate offensive lineman in the NFL! Him on one side and another like him on the other! Imagine them opening up some holes in the interior line for a running back. Could run a damn truck through!

blehh nahh not all Nords are Vikings... there is also many from this area with Sami blood, or even Celtic... which is why some Nords have some asian features.

***** Being a "Viking" is only partly geneticts really. When a person in Iceland went raiding, its was called going for a "viking". The share of celtic blood n his veins is not really important. Ergo, people who´s ancestors come from Iceland, are from the "vikings". Im Icelandic btw, and more or less everyone here (not new immigrants) can trace their bloodline to the first settlers, nordic or celtic.

"I always go into every competition with the mindset to win" ----- well now that is truly rare, cause I mean most people on earth get into competitions with the desire to lose right?? ---- the mundane, uninspiring, thoughtless comments that come out of athletes mouths sometimes is truly STAGGERING. Here's another one --- so how does it feel to win the superbowl? --- answer-----> "ahhhh, you know I guess it just hasn't hit me yet." ----------- oh yes it has, it has hit you and feels pretty much like eating a bowl of new cereal, ....... ie.... not that great, and less then what you were hoping for, that's what winning the super bowl feels like. --------you know I bet a really big burp "feels" more satisfying then winning the super bowl, and you don't have to sweat and worry so much for that, unless your mom is a backhander type of mom.
