Dear Viewer
Outback Odyssey is the fourth road train video in the series. I filmed these stories in 2001.
Please note there are two stories in this program that you may have seen before on the Long Highway Channel - the VRD cattle lift in the NT and the Channel Country cattle lift in far Western Queensland. Apologies for the duplication, however this version shows the context in which these stories were first published 20 years ago.
CONTENT:
2:22: CATTLE LIFT AT VICTORIA RIVER DOWNS is a story filmed in the wild west of the Northern Territory showing Road Trains of Australia at work.
17:29: TRUCKIES' REUNION: We travel to the annual Truckies' Reunion at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame and see a classic collection of beautifully restored B-Model Macks.
23;21: ROAD TRAINS TO CENTURY ZINC MINE: At the turn of the Century, Butts Haulage, based in the North West Queensland town of Cloncurry, was riding the big wave of the resources boom.
33:52: CHANNEL COUNTRY CATTLE LIFT: Ballard Transport has been hauling cattle for many decades. In this story we load cattle deep in the Channel Country not far from Birdsville and haul the cattle over rough Outback tracks to the rail head at Longreach.
49:14: MUTTON MILERS: While at Longreach we join transport operator, Dave Bielenberg, a gentle giant of a man and load and haul multiple decks of sheep - a job that needs a huge amount of patience.
Enjoy the program, stay safe wherever you might be, Bruce (Honeywill)

I just have to say; you Aussies are a determined bunch of bloaks. Just thought I was a big truck when hauled heavy equipment on a 4 axle, 50 ton Fontaine, but I did the job. Much admiration for all you men here.

Thanks for that trip down memory lane for me, now retired in France after 50 odd years on the road, I have fond memories of my B 61 driving for Noel Buntine back in the late 60s. Not alot has changed except for electric prods, big engines and........sleepers LOL.

#16 Thank You for showing this video. It was a real education for me. This was a tough job with tough men and women. I'm too soft and too old! But certainly appreciate the skills required to transport live stock.

You should feel satisfaction. Not everyone can drive the sort of rig you do. We're Aussies and my misses want to drive semi's. She got her heavy rigid licence last year and currently drives a school bus. Her high school kids love her and to be honest I'd love to see her work with kids longer. A lot of these kids come to her when they need to talk to someone. The kids she had were supposed to be badly behaved kids but they even clean the bus up as they get off the bus and show respect for each other when they are aboard.

@@Cocoacowgirl thanks Mate😀yeah I love her so much. She's kind caring funny and loyal. All The things I love. Her kids text her when she is not driving for the day as she also drives public buses as well. You should see some of the big road trains in Australia up close. They are massive rigs. We got behind them in our Nissan patrol 4*4 out in the northern territory.

Nice to see Toot's old girl @ 21:29 - they had to use a towe bar - even so, very happy to see the truck on the road again. I visited the Museum back in 2005 - four years later than this event. Here truck where in excellent condition and kudos to everyone that are involved with keeping this transportation museum, the historys and the truck's alive forever. All the best from Norway, Helge

Man some of those trucks sure run their tires close to worn out bald! No wonder they get so many flats, I know tires are stupid expensive, but still better than the down time, or dying from heat while changing flat tires?

I just realized, but Australia's roads are way more narrow than the ones here in Asia. But they allow Triple combos while here only One trailer is allowed.

GREAT Video!!.... Was within just a few days of getting my plane ticket (One way) to AU. from the US to marry a gal from QSLD when she "pulled the plug" on me.... was sure looking forward to moving there, as I had been over there a couple of times from the US, and once in 2010 with "her" and her sister for a month (we met in 2009 in Montana). I was looking forward to trucking over there, as I already had 38 yrs experience here in the US & Canada.... the Only thing that "bothered" me about trucking over in AU. is..... When, IF Ever... are the politicians over there, going to get their collective heads out of their rectums and allow the AU. trucking industry to Stretch out the "tractor" (power unit) wheelbase lengths?!!? It's ludicrous in this day and age, to force drivers over there to be cramped up in those tine "coffins" they call "sleepers".... especially when they can pull the longest trailer set-ups in the world on a regular / normal basis on the highways over there, yet still forced to run those short wheel based power units, mandating the use of those ridiculously small & cramped sleepers. Here in the US, it is the opposite as you know... we're restricted to 57 ft trailers without a permit, but cannot run trailer tandems set at more than you would for a 48 footer.... so a 53 ft box (or any other type trailer) is about the maximum anyone runs, do to so much "over hang" at the rear due to the 48 ft max. setting of the bogies..... yet, "the sky is the limit" for the tractor wheelbases. Actually there is a maximum and that is due to the maximum wheelbase lengths that the manufacturers like Peterbilt & KW will build...which is 394 inches (32.8 feet), of course one advantage to longer wheel bases on the tractors is that, the longer they are in relation to trailer length, the less likely they are to "jack-knife" them.... along with larger sleepers, and allowable front-end overhang on flatbed loads when necessary, avoiding overhang at the rear.

Why make things up to fill in time on your videos.???. The 'minor dust storm' is the perfect example of this.!!!. If there's nothing else to say about the footage, just let the picture do it's own talking. This should be enough.!🤔!.
