I’ve been a truck driver for the last 35 years in the States and this is on my bucket list of things to do. I would drive for free for a few weeks over there if someone would let me. The life experience would be pay enough.

In America what’s The legal limit in length?
@johndoran3274 Жыл бұрын
@@TATS_Europe it varies by state. Normally 53’ on single trailer length East of the Mississippi River and 61’ west of it. Doubles and triples are considerably longer. Tractor wheelbases can vary, the one I own has a 305” wheelbase, so I’m usually right around 80 feet long.

Growing up in Darwin, you would see these every day although the quads are relatively recent addition. Traditionally 3 x 40ft trailers + space between + pulling truck ~ 160ft. On a bicycle it was possible to slipstream at 70 or 80kmh - not always the safest thing to do! Before the tank farm was moved from central Darwin the road tankers would pull out in the morning along McMinn St and turn right on to the Daly St bridge - of course the lights were never long enough as it was an uphill climb and turn. And of course BVR applied to all other traffic (Big Vehicle Rule 🤣) I got my car licence at 16 through student driver education and started my apprenticeship with the local Cat dealer just before I was 17. Later that year the company got us to do our truck licence test - 1 day try on a 5t rigid Bedford (6 cylinder, 4 or 5 speed gearbox) and then the test a week later on the same truck. Drive from MVR (which was 100 metres from the workshop) into town, past Woolies and back to MVR. The the tester asked how old I was, I was 17 but had had my licence for more than 12 months. He said you have to be 18 to get a truck licence. Then he said it's only a few months and you're off P-plates. So there I was, 17 years old and legally I could drive a road train. In 1980 a truck licence meant ANY truck! In fact I've only driven a semi a couple of times, the main reason for the licence was to drive graders, loaders, and scrapers on the road.

When approaching many suburban road junctions in Australia you'll find two identically synchronized sets of traffic lights, one a few hundred meters before the other at the junction. The first is for the benefit of road train drivers to allow them stopping distance when necessary.

Show!

Keep in mind all these Kenworths and Mack’s are manufactured here in Australia to Australian specifications and Kenworth Australia for instance builds them uniquely for Conditions in Australia with a lot of Aussie content and are much stronger and durable than their cousins built in the US which anybody looking at this video the reasons are obvious, there is no where else in the world where you will find road going trucks like there is in Australia and this country is the leader in heavy transport and all its associated designs with trailers and infrastructure, it’s taken many decades from early motoring to get to this advanced stage and innovations will keep happening and as you can see Electric vehicles won’t be replacing transport like this anytime soon if at all! Australia is a country nearly the size of the USA and the majority of its poulation is in capital cities mostly on the Eastern seaboard and One on the Westen seaboard, Perth, and Bugger all really in between so Rail transport is a big thing between eastern Australia and Western Australia but that is thousands of kilometres of one line and this is shy it is uneconomic for rail to be everywhere as it’s just not an option and this is why we have these professionally operated road trains in our vast land

Amazing stuff. This should be named "Road Train Switching At Tha Road Train Yard" or something. Cause that's what it is. Coincidentally, it's also both something I always wondered about how they'd do that, and also there's no content named like that. If you make a new cut, upload them again or something, use those terms, and make the 'switching' as tumb, nice teaser, you'll accumulate traffic for sure. If you do that, fat chance you'll be suggested to a lot of trainfolk cause of the keywords. And they'll watch it. There's tons of rail related footage to be found, about the switching and all of that, but a minescule fraction of it's equivalent. Actually just one, this one... (Not unlikely there's at least some of it, but not in name) Thanx for riding with my train-of-thoughts. We'll hope you'll have a pleasant continuation of your journey

How do you brake these things without catching fire on the brakes ??
@TomasVarg6 ай бұрын
Good question. On theese trucks, there is something called jake break: The Jacobs Engine Brake® (also known as the "Jake Brake®") is a diesel engine retarder that uses the engine to aid in slowing and controlling the vehicle. When activated, the engine brake alters the operation of the engine's exhaust valves so that the engine works as a power-absorbing air compressor.

Did you know that some *road trains* weight more that the Sydney trains? They weigh up to 99 metric tonnes, where as mentioned road train can weigh up 200 metric tonnes or more! An they have air pressure system to release (disengage) the brakes! Who do people think that trains use air pressure to release the brakes? Even a truck can weigh between 6 metric tonnes to 20 metric tonnes!

We do have "road trains" in Canada.. Turnpike doubles are considered road trains. In some areas they pull three trailers.
