Good question. I was wondering that myself.

They use their flashers to be seen. When torrential rain falls in an Arizona microburst, the volume of water is extreme, and can truly limit visibility to only a few feet. While it wasn't that bad in the video, people get frightened and want to make sure their car is seen as the storm is worsening. Drivers don't do it so much in Tucson, but in the Phoenix area, they use their flashers a fair bit during monsoon. Older cars with small, dim taillights are very hard, if not impossible, to see during heavy rainfall at night. The lane-striping can be very hard to see when flooding is severe, and visibility becomes a major issue. While this video shows a stressful drive, in reality, it wasn't that bad. I've experienced much worse. If anyone wants to see more of Arizona's monsoon and scenery around the state, I have a large playlist, a video tour, organized to follow the map, that they can enjoy. A smaller compilation, too, focuses on some high points of Arizona's natural beauty. ~ In contrast with "Rainy Days and Mondays", a lot of lifelong Arizonans love the monsoon! :) albeit it can be intimidating to those not acclimated to it.

There's another reason same to CA catr, when it rains like this in AZ, People put their flashers on so that no one runs into them and not causing an accident.

@@treytheweatherboidicamillo3997 That was my meaning, that they want to make sure other drivers can see their car, so they won't be hit. It's all about preventing car accidents. I presumed that readers would realize that people wanting their car to be seen by other drivers during torrential downpour, was all about accident-prevention. I didn't think I needed to spell it out for them. Obviously, a car that is not seen has a higher likelihood of being hit, whereas increasing visibility of it, decreases that likelihood. That should be obvious to people. It's not "another reason"; it's the same reason.

It gets this dark when fast-moving storm clouds accompanied by heavy rain completely obliterate what's left of evening light at sundown. Trust me, I do this Peoria-Scottsdale commute every day.

I'm not in the HOV (far left) lane, if that's what you're implying. I was traveling above the prevailing speed and trying to avoid those who dropped below the 65 mph speed limit because they're not used to driving in rain. The few vehicles that passed me in the HOV lane were doing in excess of 75-80 mph.

@@VidBrats I wonder why those HOV drivers go faster than in the other lanes. Maybe theres a few people using it so they go faster?
