The ID-5100 is the best dual band mobile radio, even if the D-STAR functions aren't used. Great display, easy to get around. Cool video.

2 years after the fact but I'd love to see more about how this is mounted and how has the radio held up over the past 2 years! Thanks again!

Thanks for the comment. I've gotten a few questions about this mounting option, maybe I should do a video on it. I've used the mounts by ProClip USA (proclipusa.com) for many years now in a variety of vehicles. They work really well. The the 5100 head, I just used the ProClip mounting base and attached the magnet base plates to it. That way I just unplug the one connector and I can take the head off easily. I also use a ProClip mount for my cell phone. Great product.

There really aren't many people that know about these features on this radio. Some people even own the radio and never downloaded the dstar list. The near repeater search and scan feature make this the best mobile radio currently available. I will never buy any other radio without this feature, so no yeasu for me.

@6:25 you mentioned the scanning feature of the list of the nearest repeaters. My question is, can you minimize and maximize the distances from your location? Like set the radio to scan a 5 mile or 30 mile radius? Thank you for making and posting this video. It’s been very helpful. 73!

Hello. Unfortunately, it is not possible to specify the scanning distance (or radius). That would be a cool feature. However, the scanning speed of the 5100 is pretty fast, so it has never been a big issue for me. It does automatically update the scan list based on GPS coordinates (so the list will auto update as you travel).

Ok I love this video. Extremely helpful but I am confused with importing to DR mode. Does it over write everything in the DR list? The analog import is simple and upfront..just confused where to start with DR mode. But fantastic job overall

Hi, just got this radio and I was very excited to be able to have QSOs around the world and thus far, very unsuccessful. I have not made one single contact. Settings on the radio are correct as the repeater can hear me. 73 from KC3OLX

If you can hit your local repeater, maybe there is just no one else using it? Also, you’d only be able to have QSOs around the world by connecting to a world-wide reflector. I’d consider getting a hotspot if that is what you’d like to do.

When I travel, while driving I just call CQ on the vhf call frequency. Get lots of contacts. better than CB.

Great video, thank you. Near Repeater scan/clarification question. If I have loaded repeaters for two states, then start the 'near repeater' scanning while I am driving. Will the 5100 keep updating the scanned repeater list as I drive across the state?
@k1djb704
@k1djb704 2 жыл бұрын
No, unfortunately. The scan list is loaded when you start the scan. So you would just need to stop and start the scan again periodically. There is also no way to set the scan radius, which would be really nice.

Can you tell me how many frequencies can be put in the radio I'm a little confused between that and the Chip is it the chip that stores all the frequencies and then you transfer it to the radio as you're in those areas. I travel coast to coast as a truck driver I would probably have 10,000 frequencies, will I have to divide them up into 1000 each and transfer them as needed. Thx

I think I noticed that you had some of your local fire departments/EMS programmed into a group, are you able to scan that group and basically use it as a scanner? I would love to have that ability to scan my local emergency services. Thanks in advance. I'm new, currently prepping for technical test and considering this radio as my first mobile.

Yes you can, with a caveat. I used to have my local FD/PD frequencies setup in a separate bank that I could scan and it worked really well. You just need to make sure you don’t transmit on frequencies you are not allowed to (obviously). However, many PD/FD/EMS agencies are moving to digital (typically P25), which the 5100 cannot decode. So I use a separate scanner for public service now that can decode P25.

When you download repeaters from DStar and the SD card, do tones and offsets automatically set as well? New to ham here.

WE have to scan basially lets say driving thru state to state...on dr mode in FROM (bottom) finds repeaters....on (TOP) it would say cq cq cq talking bout using RADIO only. just scan for repeaters,your traveling,you find one inside few miles.....other equipment outside radio is nonsence....73
