I'm re-reading a book right now about a motorcycle racer who ran his 1st motorcycle road race like this at 15 in !955. He said "you only a doorway of space to make a pass. He crashed out of his first race. In his 2nd race he crashed 3 x's on the slowest bike on the grid and still won the race. He went on to race in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's (at least). His last major title was the 1992 North American Battle Of The Twins Championship in 1992 at the age of 60 yrs old. His biography is detailed in a book U st still find called "A Passion Observed". His name was Frank Mrazek, he was never famous, but he worked his whole life as a racer, a motorcycle salesman and mechanic while still racing in between many injuries that should have killed him. For him (To quote "Steve Queen" another motorcycle and car racer.) "Racing is LIFE, everything else is just waiting.

Except that this island has never belonged to Ireland it belongs to the British Crown and is autonomous There has never been a speed limit there either, which is why the race has established itself there.

I've watched quite a few of these 'Americans react' to road racing videos… and it's patently clear they don't understand what the term 'Road racing' means (not to be confused with 'street racing'… usually illegal amateur racing on open roads and city streets to settle grudges, or bets, or just for the hell of it). The circuits used for road racing are public roads, and occasionally private roadways through parks or estates, which have been closed to public traffic for the event. These roads are often re-opened for access between races… you'll see queues in the side roads at the end of a race, waiting for the 'roads open' car to pass and the course-side marshal to remove the barrier. Many of those waiting in line are spectators on bikes, who want to move to another viewing point for the next race. The circuit is opened fully for normal traffic use between race days during the same week or weekend. In the Isle of Man, roads out in open country have no speed limits, which temps visitors to try to emulate their racing heroes, sometimes to disastrous effect when ambition doesn't match talent, or they forget that traffic can be coming towards them on blind bends (foreign riders were often guilty of this one, being used to riding/driving on the right). These days the mountain section from Ramsey Hairpin to Creg ny Baa is made 'one way' during race weeks… but when I first attended the TT, in the seventies, this was only the case on 'Mad Sunday' (the first Sunday of race week), when traditionally lots of riders removed their exhaust baffles… or silencers… and jetted up their carbs, removed centre stands and other excess weight like the luggage carrying gear or windshields from their bikes, and went for a few fast laps of the circuit (looking out for watching coppers in the speed limited areas). The best time was early, just after dawn, to avoid too much traffic. The road bikes then weren't as fast as today's, so most of us survived (though you'd see a few damaged bikes parked outside hotels and guest houses accompanied by begging buckets to help pay for emergency bike repatriation, repairs, or fines for careless driving). These circuits are generally longer in lap length than purpose built race tracks, allowing higher top speeds on the longer open stretches, combined with clutch feathering tighter corners to make optimum sprocket choices difficult (in the days before electronic fuel injection, carburettor jetting, particularly for the two strokes of the period, was a nightmare in the IoM due to the variation in altitude between sea level at the lower parts of the lap like Parliament Square Ramsey, and high up, over the mountain section and Hailwood Heights. Engine seizures, or holed pistons, weren't at all uncommon. Surfaces are usually kept in good sound condition by the local authorities or landowners as looking after the track gets them the best class of riders and draws in spectators who spend money in the local economy. Apart from a few grandstands on private land adjacent to the circuit, spectating costs nothing… apart from the cost of travelling to the venue and accommodation as most of these events are over several days, or even two weeks in the IoM (ferry costs to the Island aren't cheap… it's around a 90 mile voyage from Liverpool in the UK… and bookings for both ferries and accommodation need to be made a long time in advance for the big events (a year or more for the TT races). Oh… and it's the 'bomb hole'… a vicious dip in the track which bottoms out the suspension at speed.

I know the difference between road racing and street-racing... Two completely different things... I would love to drive that course though just to witness all of the scenery first-hand

Perhaps I worded it badly, Jay… I meant many Americans don't realise the difference between road races, and race meetings on dedicated race tracks specially built for racing… often referred to erroneously as 'road racing'. @@JitteryJay

And yet another KZfaqr copying from others and moving this island to Ireland. Many videos with this “IRISH” headline are wrong this island is owned by the British Crown and is completely autonomous, has its own government and laws e.g. no speed limit on roads and even has its own national flag which you can see in some of the videos with the three legs. It's better to do your own research beforehand and not write it off It's unbelievable how many people get their headlines wrong.

@@JitteryJay But it doesn't make it any more correct if many call it Irish. it is more of a British race as the islands are private property of the British Crown. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Man
