Hello Viewers,
Presenting Episode 4 of our North Sikkim roadtrip with XUV700. This episode takes us to the heights of 14150ft at Nathula and also gives us the first glimpse of snow. Apart from the peaks, this episode takes us to the Majestic Changu lake or the Tsongmo Lake and Harbhajan Singh Baba Mandir. Both located at heights of more than 12000 ft from the sea level. The road conditions are great however the snow and the black ice makes it difficult. Few patches have extreme offroading as well where there are construction activities going on. More than the road conditions one has to keep a constant eye on the weather condition on this route. The best advice from my side would be to start early from your respective hotels and complete these spots with ease as post noon the weather conditions deteriorate and can be worse. Although in some cases early morning heavy snowfall can be a lot of challenge as well. So overall, a tricky decision to be made. We started off at 6:30 am and found the conditions to be great as the roads were empty and we could clear off the check posts with ease, which otherwise would be very very irritating as traffic piles up quickly.
Climbing to Nathula was a great experience. The roads were completely filled with fresh snow and traces of black ice. There was atleast 5-6ft of snow on the sides. More so the snow made the roads very narrow for navigation. On top of that strong winds and lack of oxygen made conditions for humans worse. It was about -8 degrees on top. We were amazed to visit all the conference halls where delegates from India and China hold talks for the BPM(border personnel meet) and also the International Boundary between India and China, the place of immense historic significance. This is the same place which witnessed the Indo-China war in 1962 and home to world's shortest war in history in 1967 where India had a thumping victory and China pleaded for cease fire. Seeing the jawans at those heights was a morale booster for us and we met many army veterans who were on a vacation to this place with their families. They did command this post during their tenure. Having a cup of coffee with them and have a short discussion on their experience was a once in a life moment for all of us. Lastly the treatment we received from the Indian Army was just mindblowing. True in their spirits (harsh on enemy and a true friend to its citizen).
In these harsh conditions also, My tiger did not gave any issues. It climbed with ease and navigated through the tough conditions with absolute joy!
