When I was in 5th grade in Tombstone, her choir did an Arizona school tour. I believe it was Catalina High, she sang 3 or 4 solos. Her talent was the reason for the tour, it was a great concert. I saw her 4 more times in later years, every show was incredible.

My friend! You hit it on the nail about these songs bringing memories! Speaking for myself, growing up Mexican-American in a border town called CALEXICO (California-Mexico), these songs evoke a memory the second I hear them. I am transported back to visiting my grandfather's farm every year for a family reunion on my dad's side. My dad had 9 siblings and they were all married with big families. Once a year, we would reunite at a farm my grandfather had and the men would slaughter a pig my grandfather had raised all year for this day and the women would cook it in different ways. All us kids would just watch and learn and continue this tradition. At night we would all dance on a stage the men had built that day. So many songs. So many memories.

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww that is so wholesome. What saddens me is that times like that are in the past. I remember how my Jiddo (grandpa) used to take us to his little place wayyy down in the valley. And he’s have chickens and sheep running around. He’s build us swings and keep us busy all day running around and doing tons of little things that honestly were just life lesson. We’d all be knocked out and passed out by 6:00pm, in the morning he’d make us breakfast and it would just be the cousins, the aunts and uncles and one BIG happy family. Maryyyy ❤️

Linda Ronstadt’s fourth great grandfather moved to Mexico 1830s, and married into a prominent Mexican family. The Ronstadt’s live on both sides of the border, because the Mexican US border moved. Linda Ronstadt’s two albums with The Stone Poneys were considered folk. She also started doing what they term back then alternative country or country rock. Yes, Glenn Frey and Don Henley were part of her band when she was solo. They would practice in her living room in LA. She was called the queen of rock she made Albums with Dolly, Parton, and Emmylou Harris in a group called Trio. She made two albums of standards, which sold in the millions She did three Spanish language albums 2 mariachi 1 Salsa She continued experimenting and expanding her vocal abilities. She sang on Broadway in the Gilbert and Sullivan light opera the Pirates of Penzance. She also did La Bohème at the public theater. She was always growing and expanding her repertoire. She’s had rock ‘n’ roll hits, R&B, hits, country hits, Latin hits Broadway hits. There’s nothing this woman cant do She was raised in a household, where she understood Spanish, she didn’t necessarily speak Spanish. But she did sing in Spanish what she considered as the magical language you could sing in. In the Oscar-winning documentary, The sound of My Voice when she went to school she said you would get in big trouble “beat” if you spoke Spanish. Because she was light skinned and had a German last name. She had it a lot easier than her Mexican-American friends.

Yes you can still watch shows like these. They are known as Mariachi and Ranchera shows. Not only can you find them in Mexico, but in certain parts of the USA. It is why these Latin genres of music are popular on Latin America and worldwide. They are songs that connect across 4 generations now and will connect for at least the next 4. Many of these songs were written and perform for 60-80 years now. Linda has been and WILL be in the Top 5 Best Female voices of the last 80 years. Her control of her breath, range, tonality, and vibrato is matched only by a handful of other artists. it is ashamed that she got progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) that ended her singing career 20 year (at least) earlier that it should have. She was not only a great singer, but she was also a caring, hardworking, humble, supportive, and one of the nicest people anyone could have ever met.

Linda released the album Canciones de Mi Padre (Songs of my Father) in 1987 to honor her Mexican heritage. The album immediately became a global smash hit. At 2½ million US sales, it stands as the biggest selling non-English language album in American record history. Linda is unparalleled, she sampled many music genres and was a smashing success in all of them.

I can’t agree with you more! I grew up in the ‘70’s when I sat down to put records on, like Linda Ronstadt, and take time to really listen to the music, the performance, the whole album, start to finish, and take it all in without doing anything else at the same time. Going to concerts and experiencing the music and musicianship without any crazy lighting or smoke or damn auto-tune (the curse of modern “music”). Yes, I agree with all that you said. At least with KZfaq we can still experience this past. The song you heard is part of an entire concert called “Canciones De Mi Padre”. Linda’s father was Mexican with German roots (thus the Ronstadt sir name). There is a KZfaq video that has the entire concert. This concert followed the release of her album by the same name. By the way, it’s is the biggest selling not English album in American recorded history. Also, to take a deeper dive into Linda’s career, I recommend the 2019 documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice “. Here is the trailer: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m6p9jKSk2pu0pn0.html

Linda was first a Rock star. Because she loves ALL forms of music, she then recorded several albums of old standards of The Big Band era as well as star on Broadway (and was nominated for a Tony) in Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance " (and reprised her role in the movie version). You already know she conquered Country music when she sang with Dolly & Emmylou. Emmylou has said that it was because Linda praised her singing early on that she had the career she ended up having. Then, against all advice, Linda recorded "Conciones de Me Padre" & put together the staging of this beautiful concert. So, SO glad she did. I was privileged to see this concert 3 times over a period of about 2 years and played the CD many times EACH DAY for about 3 years straight. I was able to learn to sing a few songs phonetically myself this way and was asked to sing one at my friends' wedding reception with a Mariachi band. One of my most cherished memories. Linda does not speak or understand Spanish, per sey. Her dad, brothers & at least one of her nieces (Mindy sings "Y Andale!" with her on the album & in this concert.) can all sing. One of her aunts was a pretty successful professional singer of Spanish language songs. Very talented family. Thanks for reacting to this treasured singer. This gifted story teller.

I'd say Linda Ronstadt was more of an all-around genre singer. She started in the folk-rock scene of the early '70s with band The Stone Poneys, then pursued a very successful career on the mainstream top forty charts. Her covers of That'll Be The Day and Blue Bayou were mega-hits. She's well worth reacting to.

Thank you for bringing Linda back!!! ❤😊 She is definitely a gift that keeps on giving. You should venture and dig into her music (pick a genre, she has done it). I consider her a part of the "American Music Royalty"! (She is up there with Karen Carpenter) Among many other achievements, she was known to open the door for women to participate into Rock Music (then a male dominated genre). Her resume is quite extensive. You won't be disappointed. 😊 In terms of your commentary, I guess the key word here is 'excellence'. She belongs to a generation that knew what true excellence was. Her music was her pride as well as her craft. That level of dedication is rate today.

She is the only artist I know of whose vocal development/improvement is audible from the beginning of her career to the peak of her powers. She did a LOT of work on that voice beginning with “Penzance” in 1980, through to the Nelson Riddle albums, then onto the Mexican music. She always had a great voice but after listening to this if you go back to her early stuff, you’ll be able to hear the difference. I loved that voice the moment I heard it back in ‘69. She’s also a marvelous human being😍

Habibi, I have a very specific memory from my teenage years associated with these particular songs of Linda Ronstadt. I was a high school student in Texas, working part time in a restaurant where many of my coworkers were from Mexico. Linda's album of traditional Mexican music "Canciones de mi Padre" had recently come out, and my coworkers were completely head over heels in love with the album, playing the cassette tape (yes that was the era of cassettes) over and over again. Her music brought such joy to my coworkers (shout out to Horacio who was the best singer) and I remember the look of pure joy on their faces as they would sing along to these gems.

In addition to Pop/Rock/Country (multiple platinum albums and multiple Grammy awards) , 3 albums based on the "American Songbook" ( 40s and 50s big band music and musicals) with Nelson Riddle, and the Mexican Music Album and show this song came from, she also performed light opera on stage and in the movie of the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta "The Pirates of Penzance", and, while it's hard to find any examples, she also made an attempt at full blown Opera with La Boheme (that may have been "one bridge too far", but it didn't stop her from trying).

When linda made these two albums she was told by her record company that she would hurt her career. Of course they said the same thing when she did three albums with the Nelson Riddle orchastra of mid 20th century standards. In both cases all she did was win a Grammy for her work. This album, 35 years later is still the number one selling Spanish language album of all time!

You should find a documentary that came out about her. Her father was Mexican. You need to understand that everything cowboys do and how they dress, they took it from Mexicans. They came into Mexican territory, and started wearing Mexican hats and clothing. this "show" is a refection of how Mexican fiestas are. This is not just a show, it is tradition.

Beautiful review! Love your comments, so insightful, and appreciative of the intricate mechanics of the song. Linda is a true vocal technician on every song in this show!

I love Linda and have been a fan of hers since the 60's. But the most impressive thing to me is that she doesn't speak Spanish and had to learn all these songs phonetically!

Linda Ronstadt could sing it all. Please react to her singing “Blue Bayou,” “Poor Wandering One” and “Don’t Know Much “ a duet with Aaron Neville. She was so versatile.

I saw this show twice. In NYC and in Pittsburgh. She was pitch-perfect through and through and the audience went berzerk! Plus I got to meet her a couple of times. Horray for ME!

I grew up it Tombstone AZ very close to Mexico border. I worked in a garage in Sierra Vista for 9 years, our top mechanic lived in Mexico, when his daughter got married I went to the wedding, a Mariachi wedding in the Catholic Church, it was totally amazing. Linda learned to sing in Spanish to do an album dedicated to her grandfather.

she was the biggest female ROCK singer of the 1970's. she's done rock, pop, spanish, comic opera (late 1800's opera on broadway), folk, and country. she didn't start doing country until later in her career. (she formed a trio - or dolly parton did - with emmylou harris) and started doing country, as well as having had country songs on her on or rock/country crossover hits. i believe it was the stoned ponies (one iteration pf her backup band) where henley, frey, and a couple of others of the future eagles met. also, since some of them were singer/songwriters - as well as musicians - and very good friends with her, after the eagles formed and put out the song 'desperado' as an eagles song, they still gave it to her to record. they later said that, even though her version was a cover (put out a few months after the eagles') the song didn't become a hit until she did it. same thing with a couple of other songs written by them. she did take some country songs and make them rock, so that may be why your friend thought she was just country. i'm 70 years old, though, and in addition to still having a lot of her vynyl from that era, i remember listening to her on the big rock fm radio stations, + the pepple who attended her concerts were certainly NOT country lol.

As the music starts I'm reminded of driving from Riverside, CA to Phoenix, AZ in the 50s and 60s and the only AM radio channels you can get broadcast from Mexico.
