Trains at L'Enfant Plaza - Railfanning Washington DC

The Washington DC area is a fascinating area to railfan with two commuter railroads (MARC and VRE) , Amtrak, CSX, and the WMATA Metro. This video will focus on L'Enfant Plaza Bridge over the mainline into DC from the south. This is the CSX RF&P subdivision coming from Richmond. It hosts CSX, Amtrak, and VRE.
This road and pedestrian bridge is near one of the busiest stops on DC's Metro System and is a short walk from the International Spy Museum. You can even see the Capital Building in the distance while watching trains!

It’s pretty fascinating that all that freight traffic passes within blocks of the Capitol, and the Amtrak and commuter trains pass under it.

Washing DC is like Passenger train alley. Seeing more Passenger trains than freight trains. Commuter trains VRE and MARC. And my favorite Amtrak.

You might also see Norfolk Southern on that line, because it is shared. You didn't get a chance to catch a double stack train, which could not be run until the last few years when the freight tunnel was duplicated and enlarged. The passenger tunnels were not enlarged, which rules out superliners.

Hope you had an awesome time in DC! I used to go through there once per year on the Capitol Limited and Crescent but their roomette price hikes the last few years have made it unaffordable for me. Great station and decent 1st class lounge, and amazing touristy things within walking distance. Have seen the spy museum, Smithsonian Air and Space museum (and saw the Star Trek TOS Enterprise model!!!), Lincoln Memorial, and the US Capitol. All around great place to visit!

Where is that coal coming from? And where is it going? Is it because the destination is on the east coast and bringing it through Baltimore and then south makes more sense than on a C&O route?

The coal is probably coming from West Virginia and going to Hampton Roads for export.
