The semi tractor-trailers I used to drive had the same ice build-up on the wiper blades, to the point the rubber was an inch off the glass. My Jeep CJ-5 also had that problem. The company I drove for was too cheap to install heated wipers.

You should install a diesel heater in the defender. They are much more effective at heating than a buddy heater, they create dry heat which won't cause condensation, and you can tap it into the defender's fuel tank so you always have a fuel source for it.

I’ve got a Chevy truck with an aluminum shell that I have to sleep in during the winter months. My set up is a 29 “ x 72 “ x 3” mattress. , a Browning sleeping bag -40 and two heavy blankets in case it’s warm enough to use just those or extra layers if it gets too cold. Always open a window for the Mr Buddy heater and it cuts down on the condensation. Always wonderful getting dripped on when it’s cold outside. When everything works correctly it’s hard getting out of a nice warm bed . Good luck.

I watch a few vanlifers from Canada. Most of them used to used the buddy heaters. They all had the condensation issue until they got either a diesel dry heater. Since you run on diesel, they just tapped into the main gas tank, and never have to worry about it running out. Some cold days they run it all night. Maybe something to think about, also don’t have to worry about carbon monoxide

Something I learned via driving a semi truck in the winter. When it’s that cold out turn your defrost off and put it on feet heat. Let your windshield get cold. The ice frozen to it will fall off and the snow won’t stick to or freeze on it.

The mountain passes in Colorado are sketchy in the winter months. Drove from Alamosa to Denver in January about 10 years ago. I've never been a nervous driver in my life. Those canister stove suck the heat from around them in order to evaporate the gas inside. In cold weather, there isn't enough heat to maintain the rate of evaporating gas. Simple old Canadian snow camping trick is to have a pan with two inches of warm water and set the canister in it. I have a foam pad under my setup to keep the water warm. It'll keep the pressure more even as the stove runs. You'll get better pressure as well. Never overhear a canister! Just warm it. Good Luck.

If you can use foil backed insulation board about 1/2 foil facing you mounted on the roof will help you greatly. It will stop the condensation and also reflect heat back to you. Use panel adhesive on your roof framing and back up with a couple screws with washers.

The worst thing you can do is wear clothing while sleeping in the cold. My wife and I own 2 acres in the Alleghany mountains of NY, and we get at least 4ft of snow up there every year. I always sleep with underwear only. I roll up my clothes and put them in the bottom of the sleeping bag. By doing so, you allow that 98.6 to fill the bag and keep you cozy and warm. My wife wears her clothes and always wakes up cold. I know you can't show us, but I hope you take this advice and use it in the future. God's best to you and your buddy while you travel.🙂

I’ve been a truck driver in Colorado since I was 18. Driving semis for Starbucks throughout the mountains while the weather is like what you experienced is the normal lol

Drone or no drone... the Roaming Reckless show must go on. I must say that you handled the loss of the drone quite well Maria as you do all your annoying little setbacks. Any possibility on getting insurance for drones when you purchase them for motor loss? Any way, you and Blue are now certified Polar Bear climate survivors. 🐻‍❄ 👍

You need a diesel heater. No condensation problem anymore.

I agree with that. Also one would not want moisture on her electrical systems

In the cold with the buddy and or the big buddy just run the pilot light after you get the space warm. That’s what I do in Washington in the cold for hunting. I’ll run the heater for an hour than leave the pilot light lit with 3 layers of foil underneath it to reflect the heat.

Idk if anyone else said this yet, but Nalgene bottles are what you use for the boiling water 😂 they’re made to withstand boiling temps, just for future reference!

Don't think I've ever been this early!! I'm only a few minutes in and the scenery is gorgeous ❤ By the way you might wanna check into a dehumidifier to help with the condensation

14:45 Ha. I knew you were in Telluride. I thought that convenience store where you spent the night was familiar! Girl, you were brave heading up Lizard Head in that storm!! Glad you made it and kept warm. I’d say we older ladies think of you as a surrogate daughter/granddaughter, so… ❤️

@@roamingreckless Top tip! If you want to reach an international audience and appeal to them, then maybe worth remembering less than 400 million people out of the planets 8 billion+ population uses Fahrenheit temperature scale. For most people minus 10 F are gibberish they cant relate to.

Kudos! We just did a tent camping trip in a truck bed tent (with our 2 cats and dog), and the coldest it got was 22°F overnight. We have the larger Mr.Buddy heater, which ended up being way to hot (even in a tent with windows vented lol), so we ended up just leaving it off. Also, Colorado looks beautiful!

If you're going to do more cold weather camping consider a diesel heater. Can warm your engine and your ' home '. It's a dry heat so it takes care of the condensation and a throttle lock to raise up your idle RPM for warm up. Great Vid!

I’ve slept in the truck in Breckenridge so many times in the winter on ski trips really not that bad if you have the gear, I always have carpet layers for the bed, military sleeping bags I have 2 Mod3 systems they’re great and just kept a coffee can for heat that I could burn a few tea candles in safely every couple hours they really will provide good heat.

I learned the hard way when I was younger! Do not pull frozen windshield wipers off a frozen windshield and beat them on the window. RUBBER CAN STICK TO AND RIP FROM THE WINDOW AND CRACK! Causing you to have to buy new wipers sooner. Pull them up when the vehicle is off during snow and ice and sleet. Just helpful advice.

For this kind of temperature I prefer to wear columbia products so it can hold up to -30 with perfect 3 layerings so that we could maintain our bodies heat all the time
