I always attract interest and a lot of questions about running Tired Eyes from home. Unfortunately I've never documented any of the conversations surrounding it so instead I made this video about some pros and cons.
I would love to hear your questions about running a coffee roasting business from home! Submit them in the comments below or direct message @tiredeyescoffee

Thanks for the vid! I started my own roasting journey this year. Here in Michigan the cottage laws are pretty awesome! No fees, and under 25K. Do you have any info on the dangers of roasting at all? Hearing some issues with "Popcorn Lung".

Hi Tyler. Here are a couple that came to mind. Thank you for your insight! keep up the great work 1. Whats your General Roasting process when dialing in a new bean? 2. How do you select the coffee you sell? and why did you pick those? 3. How did you get your current customers and any tips on how to get new ones? 4. Do you ever offer samples to people? 5. What % of people want their coffee ground? Do you grind coffee for them? 6. Do you educate customers on “Best Practices” to brew. Example 15/1 ratio…. Grind before brewing etc. 7. How do you ship you coffee out? USPS First class or Flat Rate? 8. Did you take any classes that Mills City offers for roasting? If so how did you like them

I'd like to know also. It's been a dream of mine to have a buisness where I can control as much as possible and produce a super high quality product. Do you source from someone who has the same standards as say, Sweet Maria's? How did you get your startup capital and what do you do about your labels (how much does that cost and how many do you have to get [set up cost])? What kind of bags? Have you considered some insulation in the shop and an inexpensive small-ish window A/C-heat unit to help consistency/control? I realize 25,000 BTUs is a lot of heat to combat in the summer and you'd be adding to the power bill, but for the lighter roast nuances you seem to want seem to need fine control. What's it cost to set up and maintain the website/POS system? Thanks, look forward to your next video.

I have a store where trucks can't get to safely. I meet them with a trailer and car down the street and they use a pallet jack and lift gate to get it on the trailer then i drive it to my service door.

These videos are super interesting and already have helped me get a better grasp of what smaller roasting operations look like. Inspiring stuff, dude! Hope you continue to put these vids out.

I’m in Texas, operate from the cottage food law, have a 2 kilo roaster but what helps me is a smoke eater that does well to mitigate smoke. Even when I do dark roast. I think the key to it working in my neighborhood is that the drum roaster is really quiet and that the smoke eater kills the smoke and odor so the neighbors really don’t know what I’m doing.
@fastpace81
@fastpace81 5 жыл бұрын
Nah. It’s a smoke precipitation system. It’s a big box that shocks the smoke. I got it from a supplier on Alibaba. Besides the roaster, the most important machine I’ve bought for my business.

Hey Tyler! Again great job with building your brand and inspiring me to keep roasting and hopefully opening my own shop up in NorCal. I’m sure it’s different but does your cottage food permit allow you to sell and ship online? I’m checking out Dr. Google for rules in my area, but again Thanks!

Your shed looks a lot like the Tuff Shed brand (sorry for citing the name; I'm not trying to shill for this company), and you have drywall and electrical inside. I'm assuming the shed is insulated along with the drywall. I also see a propane cylinder behind you, so I'm presuming this is how you get the heat source to the roaster. My questions: 1.) How did you set up the electrical inside and to your shed? AND 2.) Was this shed an existing structure or did you get it purpose built for your coffee roasting enterprise? Please let me know. Thanks for producing these videos.

I lived behind a Coffee Roasting company... and most of the time it smelled like they were BURNING the coffee... I hated it when they did that. I literally had to leave my house when they roasted coffee... thankfully it was only once a week. Do ALL Coffee Roasting Machines Smell that BAD? If so... Maybe I shouldn't do this.
@sebaba001
@sebaba001 2 жыл бұрын
Noooo! Not sure what they were doing. My house smells amazing. Although I do have a Hive roaster which is smokeless if done properly. Still, depends on how dark you go. You are not supposed to burn the coffee, you're supposed to caramelize them. It should smell like sweet brown toast.

I have a 1lb Sonofresco coffee roaster and have been hobby roasting for years and have been selling to a handful of people at work that really like it. I have also been wanting to get into roasting for resale on a larger scale (which will require the investment into a somewhat larger roaster (obviously it is not profitable for the time it takes at 1lb at a time). The cottage food license was a great nugget of information. Hopefully you have more of these to impart. Unfortunately, in Georgia, they restrict sales to in state only, so it is a limitation for Internet sales. Suggestions?
@glennluteraan4434
@glennluteraan4434 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick and candid response. It helps. So what other start up costs did you have? Business name (I'm sure), cottage food license, I know I will also need to invest in a shed and bigger roaster. Speaking of bigger roaster, if you had it all to do over, what do you think would be the ideal size to allow for some level of growth before having to upgrade as quickly? 2kg, 3kg? I really like Mill City for the extra features (airflow and dual drum design) and their support structure, but the cost is so much higher that I'm thinking of the Phoenix roaster as they are $1-2 thousand cheaper and would reduce start-up costs. If funds weren't an issue I'd love a Loring 7kg, but they are like buying diamonds. Maybe one day LOL.
